Purely from a listening point of view (and despite my advanced years) I look forward to the possibilities that some new band or singer / songwriter is going to come up with something really good that makes me think "great, we're still using the same 12 notes and this guy / girl or band have done something that stirs me up and sounds original. I think part of the problem is that many people (probably the 40+ group) think that all the talent has been used up. Not true. There's still a lot of great music to be written.

Thanks gang. Congrats appreciated. Nice to audition for a band that isn't age-ist I'm really looking forward to doing something different (and I get a chance to play some fretless to boot)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uH1C7G6ZjHA Singer / songwriter with a backing band in Paris. A change of style for me but it's really interesting to do something different from Sweet child of mine and Littlewing. Best of all, the band are all really nice guys and are totally open to all sorts of suggestions. 3 hour trip though to do gigs. Still all good fun.

Was in a band with my wife for about 6 months. Never a problem for us, or any other band members. We spoke to each other like normal bandmembers would, she'd give me the "eyebrow" along with the rest of them when I dropped a note or two and she, and all the others would get the same treatment. As I say, never a problem but it totally depends on the couple, and attitude of the other members. It's not obligatory that it has to go pear-shaped and if it works, it works so why not?
All very subjective, so let's have some cold hard facts: * 80% of people who think that the Beatles are over-rated have listened to 10% or less of their output * 10% of people who think the Beatles are under-rated are 20% more likely to own the entire Beatles' catalogue * 90% of people who own all the Beatles recorded output admit to (rarely / never) listening to 'Octopus's Garden' except for the first time that they heard it. * 4% of people who listen frequently to 'Octopus's Garden' have at some time been sectioned under the 1987 Mental Health Act (Source: BMI / ASCAP 2007) .
Is the answer 11?

Love it. So much space yet so complete.

I seem to remember that at one time (maybe still is) that Yesterday was the most covered song in popular musical history. Must have been doing something right eh?
The most over-rated band in history Very influential etc but I have never actually listened to 90% of their stuff. Not hostile, just never went there.
Interesting point but I guess, apart from all the screaming 15 year olds that wanted to marry Paul McCartney their talent and huge appeal really lay with the songwriting ability rather than the musicianship.

The usual lot mentioned in previous posts plus.. Celebration Freak out My girl & Stand by me (for a smoochie) Midnight hour Knock on wood Relax & Thriller if you have the line-up to do them. All old hat but they work well.

David Smith's brother is definately transfering £2,000,000 to my UK account now that he has my account details and I've only got to give him half back for my trouble. -
Oh wow is that an original '65, or the RI?
No, it's one of the new Roadworn Series from the custom shop. Based on the original Mortlake 65 model. Only 500 will be produced and apparently, each one will come with an original drayman's delivery note and an Old Holborn dog-end included in the case candy. Order to delivery time is 3 months. Bass Direct have one in (No 27) if you're interested but at full RRP of £1,395 I'll probably stick with the Lidl 5150 Mk2.

Help! Guitarist Woes..... (Warwickshire area)

Yeah see, you've buggered yourself already by using words like "versatile" and "reliable" -
Which is why you can't see a key signature
I was seriously on a loser then in addition to me just seeing a load of fuzzy black stuff on the sheet. Sadly, I really wasn't joking about the magnifying glass
Thanks for that Les but I think he's transcribed it in a different key!
Bugger. Ah well, going by the old faithfull last chord idea, it's as near as dammit some sort of "A" however, I have a tendancy to talk utter crap and understand nothing about Jazz so I'm probably not a good bet. Bilbo would probably be able to tell you.

If this helps, its a Youtube link showing the sheet music for Nebulosa. Problem is, its a little too small for me to read any key signature and I can't find my magnifying glass. You'll need to click play to see the front sheet.

I've not had any MIK Squiers but have had two E series MIJ. Both were exceptional guitars and although I opted to keep just my USA Strat, the others both played far better. They creep up in value so your investment would be safe. Not sure if that will happen to the Classic Vibes though.

Thank you all for the input. Still can't identify the actual model as Moeck have not come back to me. To answer one or two points, it did not come with the case but a local elderly professional flute player tells me that it is maple and is probably 20 years old. He was not aware of any of the school models being a three section instrument but says he could be wrong. His (only slightly informed) opinion is that it may have been the fore-runner to the Rottenburgh range. He's offered to take it to a shop in Paris for identification next time he's working there so will probably go with that. I had intended to move it on but having messed around with it for a week or so, it blows really nice and although I'll never be a good player, seems easy to get a passable tune out of it so may well keep it and use it at acoustic folky evenings. So, thanks again everyone

A great idea but doesn't quite have the mojo of a Watney's wooden crate

Early 70s jazz/funk/fusion! - recommendations?
leschirons replied to tedmanzie's topic in General Discussion
Curtis Mayfield is worth a listen and so is some of Isaac Hayes' stuff. Both great songwriters & performers. For some early fusion, check out the Japanese band Caseopia, their first album even had the Brecker brothers on it and they later hooked up with Lee Ritnour (and possibly Harvey Mason) for a couple of collaborations. Great stuff but maybe slightly off the mark for this post. -
Entirely possible if it's one of those haunted devil instruments (kind of like the bass equivalent of the red shoes). They don't come up often though.
Our holy grail of tone is all so personal though isn't it? I fully understand that most other people may think the sound I like is utter cack in their eyes ( or ears) I haven't even plugged it in to my other rig yet and when I do, although the playability will still be there, I may not be so happy with the sound. Guess I was just lucky that what I did plug into happened to give me what I wanted immediately (Genz Benz Shuttle combo) Not really sure how much any modern amp will colour a sound. I see what you're saying though, I could pick up an identical bass and hate it.
The joy of two volume controls on a Stingray hey? Glad you're happy with it though mate And as I said to Keith when he picked up the bass, my £200 Squier CV is one of the best purchases I've made on any incarnation of this site.
Happy with it? I'm over the moon Josh. Thanks again (and sorry I had no time for a chat) Stay lucky.
Yup, it's new to you so it sounds marvellous. Then in a few weeks you'll be thinking it's maybe lacking something you can't quite put your finger on, after a few months you'll get your hands on something else that's "even better".... and the process starts again. There is no cure for GAS.
I know what you're saying FR and it's probably true but in the past, I think I've attempted to convince myself over a certain period of time that the new exotic bass I've just bought was as great as I'd hoped it would be given the price I'd paid. This time however, it was a bit of a WOW moment, and not just for me, the rest of the band too, With the Fbass, Spector and Alembic etc, I always told myself that I'd get used to the neck, get used to the sounds, get used to the feel etc. This cheapy immediately seemed perfect to play and has the sound I've had in my head for all these years but never achieved. So, who knows? For the moment I'm happy to believe that I've found bass Nirvana and can't be arsed about what name is on the headstock.

Over the last few years, quite a few nice basses have been through my hands. Alembic, Vigier, Fbass, Spector, Custom shop Fender and Status. Couple of weeks ago I bought an £80 OLP MM3 5string from BC member Josh (great guy to deal with) with partly working electrics. I had planned to make this a fretless project however, after 10 minutes with a soldering iron, I fixed the problem (wire off the front vol control) and now, I seem to have found the tone and playability I'd wasted about £10,000 on trying to find. Haven't picked up anything else since and the expensive stuff have been relegated to wall hangers. Not going to defret it now. There's a lesson here somewhere.
