1.
If I were you I would get a good compressor pedal and and Boss bass eq.
Spot on +1
2. One of the worst I've played. Depped for a Blues band this lunchtime (12.00-4.00) I got, A singer guitarist who started a song in the wrong key and realised he couldn't sing it so switched between Tiny Tim and Paul Robeson. He also believes playing slide guitar means running a bottle neck up and down the fretboard (With terrible intonation) Then forgot the last wo verses of a song, leaving us with 8 bars of "A" before I finally shout "1st verse again then" A keyboard player that thinks a solo is playing the chords to the song in a "Let's dance", by Chris Montez fashion. A drummer that should go down in history as the worst time-keeper ever, makes the worst choice of things to hit and has fills that defy all logic. It actually sounds like he's walking around a drum shop with a stick trying everything out. He also has a tendency to finish a song with his hands hidden from view, giving no clue as to when it's coming. Guitarist pretty good though. I have 4 more deps with them. Oh joy.
3. Just a thought, I'm after £200 for this, any good? Just in case you decide to go with plan A.
4. Beautiful, had one of the original white Universes when they came out. Great bit of kit and surprisingly easy to play. Good luck with the sale.
5.
Yep was watching that and got it!
Nice one. I had a teal green one sone years back when they came out but wasn't really ready for six string at the time so moved it on after about 2 years. Really wish I hadn't now as I use a six a lot of the time. The necks are so shallow they are a real pleasure to play. If I didn't already have a six I would have gone for it. Glad you won it.
6. Depends what sort of gigs you're doing I suppose but if you don't need thousands of watts, the Eden Nemesis combos are reliable and good value secondhand. Alternatively the older USA Peavey combos (up to 300 watts) are built like tanks, never break down and are seriously cheap for what they deliver. Loads around secondhand.
7. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280927076241&ssPageName=ADME:B:WNA:GB:1123 A lot of bass for not much money. Had one of these and it was great.
8. Always been a fan of Washburns so at last, I now have my two faves. George Washburn Festival EA20 from the 80 (old headstock) Great sound unplugged and very easy to play. A Millenium EA2000 which I'd been looking for for about 5 years. This one turned up in France and took a 13 hour round trip to get it back home. Never seen another in the flesh. Super slim body and a very 335 - like neck. The seller refused to let the case go with it. They were a special green plush lined job. Probably would double the value if I had the millenium case. Both keepers for life.
9. Been loads of times when things aren't going as I'd like that I start to mess around recording on my own. Then an opportunity comes along to play some cool stuff on bass with someone. Good idea to keep a bass and maybe a small rig just in case you get the calling again but I see where you're coming from. I imagine that when I'm too old and tired to gig anymore, this is what I'll do. It's still making music and you don't have to put up with all the personality sh*t from others. Way to go. Do it.
10. Without meaning to sound unsympathetic, you don't really offer much information as to why you're in this situation. Everyone goes through these holidays from playing from time to time for a multitude of reasons. Unless you really need the money, rather than simply sell your gear which you may regret at some point, you could spend your time learning new stuff and upping your game bass-wise (not that I'm suggesting that's something you actually need to do) which may put you in a more "in demand" position. Unless you're pro level, our phones are not likely to be melting due to offers so do something to put yourself in a better position to play. A break from playing is a good opportunity for a bit of self assessment. View it as positive, not a reason to sell up.
11. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SCHICK-6-String-Bass-/330767908524?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item4d034dbeac Can't ask for more info than that.
12. Quite happy to play some free gigs if it's for charity or even if it's just the chance to play with some really good musicians. I play because I enjoy it although I do get paid 99% of the time. I can quite understand though that many simply enjoy playing. Even if it costs them £20 in fuel and drinks. Up to them really.
13. Aria 6 string. Paid £165 for it. Don't use it because it's cheap, use it because it's really light and comfortable so I guess value doesn't come into it for me. If one of the expensive ones were lighter, I'd use that.
14. For me, 1) Key 2) Basic structure (verse, verse, bridge, chorus etc) 3) Become familiar with the song in my head. 4) Learn each section by ear. 5) Stick it all together and take in any building or falling of tension. 6) Hope all the other buggers have done the same when we get to the gig.
15.
No problems so far, both of mine have 2008 as build dates on the stickers inside. Without you trying one I can't really comment on the sound, it good for me, others don't like them.
This one is 18 months old and immaculate it seems. As long as I can use a 5 or 6 string with it and get a reasonably clean sound, it should be fine. I'm just looking forward to giving my back a rest. A couple of Harmony Central reviews pointed out that the bottom end was a bit of a struggle so that was my main concern really. Thanks for your input Pete.
16. Salut Nicolas, bienvenu a Basschat.
17.
I bet it sounds great with 2 10's I only have one and its not a genz one I do have a Genz 12T though and its nice through that and can power my Genz 2x12T without any trouble too
Cheers for that. Had any reliability problems with it? As I've never tried one, I'm a little concerned that it may have a particular tone that doesn't suit me. The Markbass tends to give me the sound of me & my bass if you get my drift. As long as I can get a fairly funky tone with a bit of bottom, it should be okay I guess. The weight and size thing is the real issue though so I think I'll go for it anyway. I'm keeping an Eden Nemesis 200 watt combo also just in case I get any gigs that require a little more oomph and I'll link it up with the GB 3.0
18. I've been offered a GB Shuttle 3.0+10T, + 10T ext cab in exchange for a bass. I have no problems with the deal value but know nothing about the GB stuff and can't find anywhere to try one. I advertised over here that I was looking for something lighter and smaller than the Markbass CMD103 I'm using and was offered this. Originally I was looking for a Promethean or a Markbass 1x12 combo. This GB seems to certainly fit the bill weight and power-wise. Anyone got any experience of them? Really appreciate some feedback on this. Thanks, Keith
19. No idea what this is about but it may help if I go to the toilet. Back in 5.......
20.
It means "The Angry Fanfare". Also, very nice bass.
Petard means to "backfire" so I gues it's intended to be the band of farters as the French use the word "pet" as fart and, they do love a jokey name over here. Well certainly in this bit of France.
21. Absolutely brilliant. Unfortunately for the world of music, it was a "give the masses what they want" gig. It's Fete de la musique week over here and we were on the main stage in Chateauroux along with another 3 bands. All of which were really, exceedingly good and original, except that they apparently didn't deliver what the audience was looking for. We did, with the worst setlist ever (to my mind) and we stormed it. Finished up with about 2,500 in front of us, screaming for more. Real shame when you have really good musicians, playing to 100 people and we crack it with Little wing and Highway to hell
22. You're a real musician when... You hear yourself saying "FFS, we're not changing in the toilets again are we?"
23. Hi any chance of a pic or two? I sent you my e-mail address via PM. Thanks
24. I suppose you'd need to consider what style of music you're playing although some guitars will do pretty much anything nowdays. If I was into blues/rock for example, I would probably go for a humbuckered Strat or a maybe a Les Paul if the weight were not an issue. If it's jazz, then maybe a 175 or something like that. Maybe an Ibanez or an 80's Kramer Baretta if I were into something heavier. PRS are great of course but for me, not different enough to justify the cost. If I could only have one that would probably do anything (and the looks didn't bother you) I'd have a Parker Fly. Great guitars, great sound and unbelieveably light. Had one a few years ago and regret selling it. Good luck with whatever you buy, sounds like it'll be fun looking and trying with that sort of budget. At least they won't ignore you in the shop
