He'll probably know me more as a friend of Greta and Mark (Greta and the Strayshots). Haven't seen any of them for a few years now but, coincidentally, I am playing a gig at the Essex Arms this very evening!
Then I'll pass on the hello to Greta when she gets here too. Who are you playing with then at the Essex tonight? Any locals I might know from the old days? Have a good one anyway mate. K
Do these gigs mean you can curry favour with the audience then? I'll get me goat...
Shouldn't that be curry flavour? Oh dear

Stressfest by the Steve Morse band (unless you're into jazz of course) -
I used to play bass with Steve and Graham at Pam's Bar. Quite a while ago now. Geoff.
Hi Geoff, I'll pass on another hello then when he gets over. Maybe it was you playing when I last saw him there. Must be at least 15 years ago now, maybe more. Had another mate on keys (Chris Sheehan) Did you have a combo or cab that had blown speakers replaced with RCFs? (I do remember some weird stuff y'know) although I could be seriously confused about who was in the band at the time.

Maybe he should have spent his money at the dentist instead of the music shop.
Good Lord - I know Steve Curtis. Damn fine player. Oh, and congrats on the curry night.
What a small world eh? Steve was coming over to see his sister and I persueded him to come and demo some amps at the guitar festival whilst he's here. Used to go and see him down at Pam's bar at the Essex arms when we lived in Brentwood. Considering it was me who arranged this gig for him, he'll p*ss himself when he sees the ad. I'll pass on a hello when he gets here.

Opinions please, although I know the answer....

This is always a problem when this comes up at gigs. Over the years, it seems that it's been a bit one-way traffic for me as it's usually the other player that needs my rig and never the other way round. I voted "depending on the player" and I'd stand by that. If I knew him and trusted him, then no problem. Afterall, it does save change over and set-up time. However, it seems that you do not know the other bassist so you can't really lend your gear out and simply hope that they won't just do the "11" with all the knobs, which, has happened to me in the past resulting in me shouting at the guy on stage and turning down the bass and low mids before it all went pear-shaped. I just got a blank daft look in return. Is it not possible to get in touch with the other player and maybe get a feel for how he's likely to behave with your rig? -
Hi A friend of mine has recently purchased the leftover stock from a local music shop that has closed. Among the mic's and mixers is an Aria P Bass, its black, white and rosewood and is going for £80. Il post pics if there's any interest. Cheers Steve
If the hand of john curley doesn't take it, can I have next dibs? Our drummer is looking for a starter P bass (these are dangerous times)

If you're going to gig whatever you buy, you're better off with the Epiphone as a Gibon would probably just run around and cause havoc in the pub and steal bananas.
-
Don't tend to have this problem so much on bass, but I certainly do with vocals. A whole line will just vanish from my head, usually when I'm thinking about it in advance. So, I turn my head away from the mic, make out I'm saying something to the drummer and then come back to the mic for the next line. Works a treat and no-one knows I've messed up. If it did happen on bass, I'd just scream "FIRE, FIRE, WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE" That would probably divert attention away from my playing.

My third bass was a Vigier Passion. Incredible, and only sold it because it looked a bit too 80's pop. In hindsight, I should have stayed with it.

A trip to a good teacher who can properly assess your level and ability and suggest the best way to move forward after finding out what you'd actually like to achieve.
Like most of us I am forever trawling the basses for sale postings just to see what's out there. Whenever a Wal comes up it seems to be treated like the Holy Grail of basses, commanding serious cash and defying the depreciation associated with most custom basses. Having never played one I often wonder what it is that makes them so special. Some I've seen look absolutely amazing but others look like they have been built with the wood from a 70's wardrobe. How much of the price reflects the collectability of the instrument as opposed to the quality. Do they sound any better than a custom Shuker or ACG ? I hankered after an Akai Deep Impact for so long and when I finally got one I was really disappointed and wondered what the fuss was about. Has anybody bought a Wal and found it has not lived up to their expectations or are they truly the best out there ?
Maybe we all have to actually try one out. I've never played one either and feel exactly the same. I don't find them attractive basses at all and can't say I've ever heard one that "blows me away" so it must be in the playing experience I guess. Is there a Wal sound? or is it like anything else that is coloured by the player, amplification etc? Feel the same way about Alembics. I've had two. One looked like it was made in an afternoon with a lump of wood that was found in the corner and sounded okay, the other looked really beautiful and sounded like everyything else I'd ever owned. Still, people love them so there must be something going on there.

The guitarist in one band is a bit of a Robben Ford and Eric Johnson freak se we do about 4 numbers of each. Nailing some of the Roscoe Beck lines is difficult for me as the guitarist always wants to the "live versions" which are always 200mph faster so I admit, I bullshit my way through a couple of those. I got "Animal" by TOTO pretty much spot on last week after about two or three hours but I'm still nowhere near anything like the record on Son of a preacher man that I do in another band. I simply can't reproduce that one, or even get close.

Salut Anthony, Je suis anglais mais il y a huit ans que j'ai habite' en France (La creuse 23) Tres belle basse. J'ai eu un BN5 aussi comme la tienne. Bienvenu. Your English is fine.

A bit sh*te but rewarding. sh*te because, Being my last gig with a classic rock outfit (that the drummer had booked for us) we walked in to find the audience had an average age of 65. They certainly weren't up for Judas priest, UFO and Thin Lizzie. Rewarding because, I met two really nice people on the same bill. A sax player called Patsy Gamble who's from Gloucester, and the singer / guitarist from the 70's Prog rock band Blonde on Blonde who now does a solo acoustic set. Genuinely nice people. Made the night worthwhile.

Jaco probably just kept to his Jazz because he simply loved it and it suited his purpous. Re Jeff Berlin, there is no doubt he is an excellent bassplayer. People tend to slag him off simply because he comes out with the odd contraversial comment. Thing is not to mix up his personality and his ability as a player.
