i'll tell you what i do when slapping, you said you accidently hit other strings sometimes? to counter this, use the tip of the finger used to fret the string you are slapping to just lightly touch the bottom of the string above it, which basicly mutes it. so if you accidently hit it, there isnt any real sound to be heard from it if you hit the intended string aswell. and for the string below it, this should be pretty obvious, just use your palm/bottom length of fretting finger to mute them. i find this really helpful when performing agressive slap when your thumb can be moving at a high speed, and hitting another string accidently can happen easily, especially if you are using the popping technique with the slap. which chilis song is it you've decided to do? i cover alot of chilis stuff, stone cold bush, blackeyed blonde etc, and i think the bass boomer strings flea uses really emphasises the slap tone. and they do last.

Me and a few bass mates from the band society at uni have been argueing over how flea plays the bassline to this song (his way, not any improv fans play) It's the after the 4th pop in each bar, i personally play a mute pop on the G before slapping the A, and i believe this is how flea recorded it. but my mate says that its not a mute pop on the G but a double slap on the A, which is the one i've seen most around, but i'm pretty convinced it is not a not a double slap. does anyone here know the 'proper' way (the way flea plays on the record and live)???? cheers guys. Paul

cheers man, ill check out the euros and the legends. and as much as i love the chili's bass style, i wouldnt go near the fleabass, since a. its basicly a musicman stingray that's all shiny and b. it costs twice as much! and i prefer the stingray sound aswell, but ive got a sterling!!! i do like the sound of spectors, been having a look round youtube. i think im going to go for one of those, i personally hate any 5-string bass, not for me. and i have pretty long fingers so i think a small string spacing on them wouldnt be too good for me, but i do like small spacings, on the jazz and sterling, but not too small, i like good space for my fingers to drive more power into the strings. ill check out the spectors round glasgow, see if i can find any shops that do them anymore.

i personally dislike fretless basses for the round, fat, nasally sound, i prefer a nice flea tone, high ended and sharp.
Strange bidding patterns? Price going up rapidly by £650 in a few minutes - 6 hours before end of auction? I've bought tons of stuff of ebay, but never seen a bidding pattern like this......... And it's getting silly. private listing - bidders' identities protected £2,050.00 31-May-09 10:48:00 BST private listing - bidders' identities protected £2,000.00 31-May-09 14:05:06 BST private listing - bidders' identities protected £1,900.00 31-May-09 14:04:31 BST private listing - bidders' identities protected £1,800.00 31-May-09 14:04:01 BST private listing - bidders' identities protected £1,700.00 31-May-09 14:03:38 BST private listing - bidders' identities protected £1,600.00 31-May-09 14:03:22 BST private listing - bidders' identities protected £1,500.00 31-May-09 13:38:58 BST private listing - bidders' identities protected £1,315.01 29-May-09 23:06:17 BST private listing - bidders' identities protected £1,315.00 31-May-09 07:58:07 BST private listing - bidders' identities protected £1,275.00 27-May-09 23:32:04 BST private listing - bidders' identities protected £1,100.00 27-May-09 03:38:02 BST Starting Price £999.99 21-May-09 20:18:20 BST
looks like a price bumper tbh. get them all the time, i swear to god when i got a bit of equipment off ebay i was about to get a bargain then the price just soared randomly.

im not a spot on p-bassist, only played one once or twice, but the condition its in does make it seem pretty originaly tbh, and the looks seem similar to those i've seen already on ebay.

Hey, i play a fender jazz, and i've jammed with one of my uni mates who plays the exact same bass you have, colour and all, you've got there, and i can state, ladies and gentlemen, the moded squires play almost as well as fenders. there is still the tone difference you can tell from the fenders, but it's still a sweet bass. and what kind of tone was it you were looking for out the amp, was it a more high end tone or more round?

I've got a music man sterling too, i got it imported from america, got the serial number checked out, turns out it was made in '96, and plays so much better than sterlings made around the last few years. do you know the serial number's letter on your sterling? i prefer them over the Rays as that have that kick the stingrays give, that iconic music man growl, while keeping a really nice light, bright tone that can be used for alot more styles of music than the ray. i did spend a while trying to chose over the sterling or the stingray, but in the end the sterling came one top for me, much faster, slimmer neck, more frets, 3 way coil switch and a smaller, lighter body and also, as mentioned before, the sound. played through a line 6 lowdown 150 with me, beautiful, crisp, sharp tone, good for drive and melodic lines. i'd give the sterling a 9/10 too, the only problem being that there isnt an amazing amount of low end to balance the mid and highs, but tbh, thats what the eq is for!!!!!!!!!

i'll check up some of the videos on youtube, and ill check out the laklands, i think theres a few in the shop in the city, but from your comments, im pretty attracted to those spectors, im gonna have to get to know the hiararchy of spector and the others before i start deciding which to go for! Edit: which spectors are of much use for all-round style playing, slap/funkstyle/melodic etc i can see a few euro's which go up to pretty high prices, but there are more reasonably priced legends, are the spector legend basses any good?

Cheers guys, i was thinking about a spector before, heard they had nice slap tones, and you can tell from the old chilis stuff etc, they seem to have a nice high end sound. the status basses ill have to go out and find, and check out how they play, do you know any records which use this bass? and ill see if i can find any second hand sadowsky's, i would like a bass which retains the jazz shape but tith a new feel and sound altogether. thanks alot for the help guys!

im looking around the 1000 mark, nothing too high in the price range but a nice bass and nice sound.

Hi there, ive been playing bass for a good few years, been in a few bands and to be honest, im relatively in-experienced compared to alot of other bassists, so id like a bit of advice. i started of by learning on this little encore precision, and then switched to a fender jazz. later i bought myself a sweet '96 musicman sterling, and i love my basses, and ive had them so long, ive forgotten about alot of other basses. and i think it's time for a little change in sound, and i was wondering if you guys could, based on my basses ive played aleady, advise what make of bass i should go for? i play through a line6 amp, which sounds better than most people would think, especially on the marshal setting, where the tone is absolutely fantastic for the jazz and sterling. i play alot of agressive slap bass, while i look for a nice soft tone for fingerstyle playing. cheers guys.

I just got a set imported from across the pond and theyre a really good set of strings, they fit my MM sterling perfectly and produce that hard-hitting sound i wanted with the mellowness a stingray could never achieve. i was told they were overpriced, and not worth the money, but id say they were worth every penny i spent (£16.78 to be exact). does anyone else use them? what kind of bass do you like to fit them to?

Thats great man, we do play alot of funk and funk metal fusion, ill at least invest in a good wah, and ill have a go at the flanger, see the sounds i can get out of it. thanks alot for the advice, appreciated.

Ive been playing with the synth and od in sync, and ive found the effects i can get from only 2 pedals to be quite limited now. i was thinking of getting these 2 pedals, but im not sure what kind of tone they give, or what bass/style they are best for. any ideas? thanks.
