Sandberg has two models that coud work for you: Sandberg Ida Nielsen: One of the basses I desire the most. Is a Pbass shape but with a single pickup and MM pickup configuration. I love everything on this bass. Sandberg Martin Mendez: 2 jazz bass delano pickups in a Pbass shape. It has two finishes: matte black with maple fretboard and black block inlays and white with ebony fingerboard (I prefer white in this case). Is a passive bass but I only have a doubt with this bass. Both pick ups are a little bit closer to the neck so I'm not sure if that's the "vintage" sound I would want. My vote is for the Ida Nielsen model, if you want that kind of sound. Theorically the pick up configuration of my Enigma 5 is closer to the bridge than the normal VM (correct me if I'm wrong) but for me I get a very good Pbass sound using only the neck pick up. I can compare with my 68 P and even when it's not the same is a very close and usable sound.

I'm not sure if I understand your question but the TT models are like a jazz bass and the VT are a Pbass with a single pickup in the Bridge position

After reading carefully the lasts messages I want to add my own opinion an experience about strings and pick ups. About using flatwounds on your Sandberg: it's up to you, what works for me doesn't necessarily means that work for everyone. You have to try it. In my opinion the best match for a flatwound is a pbass (or vs in sandberg) for me is the configuration where fits better. I used Labella in my Enigma 5 and even when I feel comfortable and liked the sound I always felt a lack of....something, so I returned to rounds again. At the moment I have never found a flatwound in 5 string version that I like for a long time. In 4 strings my choice is very easy, Thomastik. About changing pick ups, I'm not a very big fan of changing anything on my bass. Sometimes I have had the idea of adding a passive tone to my sandberg (Holger please do it!!!) but I refuse, I like my basses with their pros and cons. If I have to change some pick ups looking for a vintage tone I have 3 options in no specific order: Lollar, Lindy Fralin and Kloppmann.

Congrats, it seems a very good bass. Despite the adjustments I think that it's better that a mexican jazz bass. Real picks will be welcome, thanks for posting

If a guitar player wants to tell which strings I have to use it's probably and wouldn't be very polite. Why do the bass players have to adapt our sound (bass, amp, strings...) for the "good sound" of the band but the guitarists don't? If we are a group we have to work for sounding better but together not adapting to a "reharsal music legend". I'm tired of that comments from other guitarists.

I used LaBella on my 5 strings bass and I love the result. The sound change completely and the bass are not so versatile in terms of different sounds but you get a "vintage" tone that I love. I'm interested on playing a Thomastik flats but at the moment I'm happy with DR Black beauties.

I'm not a big fan of changing anything on a bass if is not necessary. Sometimes I thought on changing the pickups of my Enigma but because of the shape (seems to be a humbucker but it's a P pick up) and after playing a lot with it I ditched that idea. I like my basses how they were made, with pros and cons. But I have to admit that there are something that I don't like on my bass. Why don't they put a passive tone in their basses? It has no sense for me not having a passive tone when I use the passive mode. Sandberg please, think about it.

Hi, I have a question for a Sandberg players. I have an Enigma 5 that I'm in love with that. As I said on my first message on this topic, is one of my favourite basses because it has a very good sound, comfortable neck, lightweight.... But in the last months I'm thinking about the neck pick up, sometimes I feel that I could need a little bit more low-end sound, more vintage if I can say. The current pickup is very good but a little bit more agressive and I'm looking for a more vintage sound, more deep and warm if is possible. Has someone change a pick up on this model? It's complicate because of the shape, but I want to know if is possible and if someone has changed. Thanks

I have the black beauties ok my enigma 5 anda fits perfect. Incredible sound anda look. I don't like the bright so much but the more I play the more I like It because that bright dissapears a little bit.

I tried LaBella 5 strings flats (not low tension) and the result was very good. The punch of the bass decrease but on the other side you have a very good midrange and a warm tone. The B strings was more usable than you can expect, not the best definition but very vintage. Interested on playing my Sandberg with Thomastik flats...if I do I will explain my thoughts.

I'm reading this topic carefully and I couldn't be more agree more with your opinions. My favourite Sandberg configuration is the VM5. Is not a traditional P bass but if you want a Fender sound buy a Fender. For me Sandberg has a traditional sound but a little bit more agressive. I love all Sandbergs I played but at the momento my favourite is my Enigma 5. Why? because I think that it has a unique voice. Because of the pick up position it has more punch but using the blend control you can control easily. There's only one thing that I don't like so much. In passive the treble knob it should be a passive tone but it doesn't work very well, I can't appreciate a lot of change on the sound, is very very subtle. Lately I'm playing a repertoire close to soul and Latin jazz and that bass works perfect in the mix.

Hi, I don't usually write here (sorry for my horrible english) but I just discover that group today and I want to share my gear here. That's my Sandberg Enigma 5, with Dr Black beauties, is one of my main basses and I couldn't be happier with it. At first sight could seem a very "hard rock" bass due to is the Chris Childs signature model (hard rock bass player) but nothing further from the reality. I play blues, soul, latin jazz with that incredible bass and sounds amazing in every situation, maybe the most versatile bass that I have. In styles that you could expect a Pbass or a jazz bass that bass fits very good in the mix and every musician I play they love its sound. The neck pick up has a very convincent P sound and turning to the bridge pick up you could get a "nasal" sound close to Jaco sound with punch and definition. Classy look, classic sound, well balance, incredible neck...perfect for me.
