  1. If they either work (when tapped) or don't, it's not likely to be anything to do with magnetism, since that would be a weak signal but permanent.

Most likely is a dodgy joint which will involve re-soldering - very carefully. If they work when tapped you're obviously creating the connection which is not engaging properly at times.

Like a lot of queries of this nature however it can only be fully analysed by a techie person seeing the bass in front of them. I would help you myself in this case but I reckon I've just missed the last bus to Finland.

BTW, what does that make yours worth Howard? ;)

Well my tatty sunburst 63P was bought in Denmark Street for £450.00.

Mind you petrol was 1/11d a gallon back then.

I would expect a modest increase in value at the present time.

My 1962 Jazz was £45.00 from a shop in South Shields. I think they were actually giving petrol away then.

Don't lose too much sleep, items this good should absolutely be preserved, I'm sure the lucky buyer will have several pre-CBS players basses to take to the Dog n' Duck. I've said this before, if you had a mint 1965 Ferrari 250GT Daytona, you wouldnt use it for the school run, or leave it parked in the Lidl car park, but it was made to be driven!! Horses for courses.

I really doubt this bass will be gigged whereas a 1965 Ferrari 250GT 'made to be driven' I think would be, though not as we agree for trips to Lidl.

BTW if you say 'horses for courses' quite quickly it can be followed up with 'Sure they do. That's how foals are conceived'

  4. One thing slightly saddens me. This bass will almost certainly never see a gig, at least not at the weekly jam down at the Ferret and Scrotum.

Not sure Leo would have approved. He did after all design and build things to be played rather than spend their life in some temperature controlled vault only to be gawped at few times a year. But I suppose once an owner pays the price he can do what he wants with it. Still makes me a bit sad though.

  5. Difficult to be 100% certain unless anyone can scale up the photograph, but I have an original 1962 Jazz and, measuring from the bottom point of the scratchplate, the bridge pickup is hit at around 20mm. You should find your 70s version is further back and the white re-fin looks like it is also.

Leaving the neck pocket untouched is quite a tasty thing to have done IMO - it shows the original colour and therefore that it's an 'honest' re-fin.

So these Veblen effects. Anyone tried them? Because I'm after an analogue type delay, see.

Apparently the Veblen analogue delay is quite good but a bit expensive for what you get. I think they may be trading on their name to a certain extent.
