Help on dating a vintage Fender Tweed Case needed
The Bass Doc replied to 73Jazz's topic in Accessories and Misc
From it's condition this is likely to be an early 80's re-issue case - they were often supplied alongside 'V' serial numbered USA 57 and 62 style basses in that period. -
IMO, to really get the Motown sound, one should think happy thoughts while playing. The technique is one thing - the attitude and bounce is another.
I try to get close to the Motown sound so, in the light of the above, I shall think about the birth of my son , my present attitude towards him , and take along a trampoline . I am Morethan Semen...thank you for listening.
I'm not trying to be funny Howard (I find it easy to be not funny) but I looked at your topic title and thought "About 5mm".
You're quite right, I'll change the title. You're also quite right about not being funny - I have the same trouble myself. -

Kent Armstrong Hot P bass pickup (ceramic)
The Bass Doc replied to Mod_Machine's topic in Accessories and Misc
Just noticed Darren Riley in the states advertises Mustang bass pickups - $39.95. -
Looks real enough to me - Fender couldn't make a full decal fit to some left-handers so the main name is all you get in this case.
I'm not in a band at the moment. But if I was I'd be slapping the singer for forgetting where the bridge goes in 'Take Me to the River'. What a cock.
Before you do leave, at the same time as slapping him, tell him he'll find out where the bridge is once he gets to the river.

An Example Of Rob Green's Early Work?
The Bass Doc replied to Macko1968's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I think Bassassin will be along to confirm it's Japcrap heritage. Probably from the same stable as Columbus, Avon etc. -
Wayne recently supplied a Squier Precision for a young relation of mine. Superb packaging (just as well we weren't in a hurry to get the thing out!). Excellent deal from a top chap.

Are you liking the EMG Selects?
Anybody used the EMG Select P pickup before?
I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with the response you get using the EMG Select - Hillbillydeluxe specially requested one to be fitted to his main gigging P-bass and prefers it to the many others owned over the years.

I think I'll put all my basses on ebay ....
The Bass Doc replied to Ou7shined's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I'm going to not buy it - I've made an offer I don't want to pay. See if he doesn't accept it. I don't care if he does 'cos I mean not to pay him anyway and I expect he'll not give me negative feedback. That won't count 'cos I wasn't the person that made the offer in the first place and I don't exist. -
Actually, one thing I didn't know until very recently is that one of Corian's constituents is calcified puy lentil.
Well that's fascinating. Learning stuff like that beats sitting around vegetating.
Now you're being silly.
Silly? You want silly? Results so far:- Raw carrot seems ideal for out and out rock sounds Broccoli - gives you the kind of twang suited to James Bond themes etc. Peas - OK if you only use the garden variety - the others make the sound a bit, well, processed. Beetroot - ideal for simple 60s stuff. Green onions - for the Duck Dunn tone. Swede - great when used with an EBS backline. Butter beans - makes the bass play like.....very smooth. Iceberg lettuce - very cool and well suited to jazz........bit like Bilbo himself.
I would see the material of the nut to be less relevant than cabbage.
Right that's me off to the workshop to try some cabbage in the nut slot. I think a fair test would be to compare it with a piece of celery.
I think there is an argument that some players (not all by any means) are trying to 'buy' talent and, rather than working on legitimate, tried and tested methods of musical learning, try and adress their shortcomings by buying gear. I heard even Guy Pratt talking about a bass with a 'fast neck'. I don't care how fast the neck is, if a player has no musical knolwedge and lacks core competences like time etc, a 'fast neck' ain't going to solve the problem. I make no secret of the fact that most of the talk on here about gear is irrelevant nonsense - there is a thread on here about the best material to make a nut out of (walnut, obviously). What possible difference can that make to anything? I get that you get more sustain from this or that material but how many times a night do you hit a note that sustains long enough for that to matter? In fact, you are as likely to NOT want it to sustain. I think its all smoke and mirrors. I can't tell the difference in sound between a Jazz and a Precision or a Ken Smith or a Fodera. I can tell the difference between a Dorian minor and a Phrygian minor. That matters. But an ebony vs plastic nut? As important as the colour of your lead, methinks.
Very good points made. I have contributed to the 'nut material' thread in what I felt at the time was a helpful way but afterwards I thought I really should have said "I'll consider the importance of this item when an old biddy comes up to me at the end of a gig to comment that my playing was pretty good but she felt that my sound would have been better had I had a Corian nut fitted".
-
I've just returned from the workshop after a little experiment. Had a neck with no nut fitted yet - played the thing 'as is' with the strings obviously resting on the first fret - sounded OK. Pushed a ready cut bone nut into place - sounded OK as above. Removed the nut and replaced it with a piece of folded cloth simply to clear the first fret - sounded duff on open strings but just the same as above on fretted notes. Kind of adds weight to the view that, other than open strings, the material of the nut matters not.

One of my basses still carries a set of Fender flatwounds from which the box is labelled with the price of £8 15s 0d. Admittedly not my main gigger now but it was for a good 15 years or so.
