1. Perhaps the seller can provide measurements - and maybe photos of the pickups in their covers.
2. Just noticed MartyBRebelMC is selling a pair of Nordstrands - check out his ad in the 'musically related' section. H.
3. In some cases you can turn 'rare' on it's head and view the fact that not many were made because they weren't particularly good/didn't sell well. In my time as a dealer many moons ago I was offered an early 50s Fender Precision which I declined on the basis it didn't sound as good as the 57 onwards type - Leo Fender must have thought the two-part pickup was a better design. Same thing on the 'rare' dual concentric Jazz - he changed to the 3 control system quite soon, presumably for better performance. So sometimes 'rare' indicates something was changed for good reason and shouldn't, in my opinion, make it automatically worth hods of money.
4. Interesting idea. Worth mentioning that Basspartsresource already sell a 5-string Jazz bass front pickup cover - advertised as for the Marcus Miller model.
5. I may be able to help - can you be sure of the year of your bass? OR, maybe take a photograph of the back of the headstock?
6. Played regularly since 1963, now bruised and battered, smoke damaged and none too pretty (same could be said of the bass).
7. The metric thread mentioned above will be fine if it's for the later 70s model that carries heads made by Schaller (they'll have 'Made in Germany' stamped on the reverse of the plate which is engraved 'Fender'). If however your bass is from the earlier 70s period those screws will not fit as they require an American imperial size - 12-24 x 3/8ths.
8. Tweeters - can they be disconnected? I deliberately avoid contact with anyone who tweets so the answer must be yes.
9. Your local model shop should stock a two-pack Ripmax product used as dope (not that kind).
10. The blue shed spoils it - surely you could apply some yellow-to-red-to-black kind of wood treatment. Admittedly the red would probably fade a bit with the sun.
11.
oooooooh That's nice.. Never noticed it was vintage green between those layers Real Celluloid so it will shrink and crack Perfect!
Hey OG, I've got an idea - if the original type material does shrink and crack, you could cut it into say 5 pieces and maybe start a trend.
12. Legend has it that the model 4001 was designed with flats in mind. Unless someone chimes in with an 'against' opinion, I think you should try them and report back.
13. Glad it worked out - that'll be two guineas and a chocolate frog please. 18 volt? I wouldn't bother personally, but, as you say, can't go far wrong
14. Not sure you've got the wires to the barrel jack the right way round - try swapping black and white?
15. It's a bit difficult to tell from that pic but if we assume the wiring is correct, the problem is more likely to be at the connector end where they meet the pickups. This is alluded to by my friend Hugh Hands above. One tip I use is to ensure that when the connector is in place you can see small 'windows' of copper when viewed from the underside of the pickup (the wrong way shows only black plastic). Check this and come back to us. I'm bound to say that judging by your avatar you seem a little young to be wielding a soldering iron.
16. Now that's a fine example of the luthier's art right there. The bridge is something else.... it must be something else 'cos it's certainly not a f...ing bridge.
17.
plum plum plum plum (crotchet/quarter note) apple apple apple apple (quavers/ eighth notes) banana banana banana banana (triplets)
OR, for those who are not vegetarians:- beef beef beef beef (crotchet/quarter note) chicken chicken chicken chicken (quavers [cheese and onion flavour]/eighth notes) venison venison venison venison (triplets)
18. Hmm.... The pecilled date appears to be written with an HB whereas I always thought Fender used a 2B to write the dates, particularly around September 1960. OK, so I'm kidding.
19.
Howard, you must have the biggest drawers of anyone on BassChat (oo err missus)! Did the flats sound any good?
It'a true I have enornmous drawers - there's a lot I have to cram in there. The fact that I have the strings stored indicates the factory flats were, quite frankly, naff. That wouldn't put me off trying flats on almost anything nowadays however because more modern flats seem to benefit from better quality control.
20.
Thanks chaps. I was thinking of experimenting with some TI Flats but the neck is not set up for these (and the truss rod adjustment tool I ordered on eBay has not yet arrived) - plus I wasn't sure flats would suit this bass. As Shaggy said, its quite dark sounding so I assume (perhaps incorrectly) rounds would be better.
Believe it or not I bought a brand new '76 Bi-centenial T-bird and it had factory fitted flat wounds on. No longer have the bass but I actually have the strings - orange silks at the bridge end only.
21. Going to have some trouble playing All Right Now as the bass intro to the guitar solo can't work with the 19th fret missing. So for that reason alone...........I'm out.
22.
Howard the Bass Doc had a Boner up for sale here last year: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=49667 £450 was the price. Don't know if that's what it went for, and I don't know how it compares condition-wise, but there's a ballpark figure.
Yep it did indeed sell for £450.00. The feeling at the time was that it was not as desireable as the standard shaped Jazz. The electrics were normal spec.as I recall. It had been re-sprayed, fairly well, and was a good player. I haven't experienced many 'boners' since, but then I am quite old.
23. Depending on the time of day/night, I appear to be free on the 5th June. Well, when I say free, I presume money is involved. If I am accepted, my fee will be a pound per correct note - I'll make sure I have plenty of change with me. PM if required.
