Doesn't matter who any country enters this year - best they can hope for is second to Ukraine.
This
It will make absolutely no difference if Freddy Mercury comes back from the dead and we put him in. It is uttery impossible for us to win, everyone hates us.
and this
Oh no we haven't entered something serious have we? No other nation is ever going to vote for us as they all hate us... The only nation that would get less votes than us is America if they were part of europe and they entered... We're better off putting something ridiculous in and making a a joke of it. Taking it seriously is embarrasing.
and this.
That's our problem right there. It IS a serious music competition. Everyone else treats it so.
Which is why Scandinavian countries historically voted for each other, regardless of the 'quality' of the songs. Ditto, the Balkan countries. Ditto the ex-Warsaw Pact states. Additionally the introduction of tele-voting, where viewers themselves can vote for any country except their own, has been massively advantageous for countries with a large number of expatriates living abroad. For example, the three Eurovision countries with the largest population of Turks and ethnic Turks are Germany, France and the Netherlands. And surprise surprise, the three countries that have given Turkey the most points in the last nine years are Germany, France and the Netherlands. Add those points to the ones given by the relative Eurovision new Balkan kids such as Albania and Bosnia, and it is no surprise that Turkey finished in the Top 5 seven times in the years 2003-2012 (having also won it in 2003), having only had one Top 5 finish before phone voting came in in 1998. But hey, it's all about the songs, right?
Am I right I'm saying some companies use the term basswood for an undisclosed species though? As I said I've had basses with bodies of "basswood" and I can definitely say it's verging on blended sawdust+glue rather than wood
If they do, it is blatant misrepresentation. Basswood is a particular tree -- it's what our British lime or linden tree is known as in the US.
-
basswood( or tilia, lime or linden , as it is also known)
Or as it is also known in some parts of the world, the Chipboard Or Even MDF Tree
I'm not going 'cause its a right old din and there seem to be more celebrity bass guests than players
If you can call rock, metal, funk, soul & soloing gods and some of the most widely recorded session legends on the planet 'celebrity guests' rather than players, then yes you are absolutely right. Personally I am absolutely gutted not be going, but fiscal and geographical factors make it impossible. Does anyone fancy working out how many albums Lee Sklar and Mo Foster have appeared on between them??
Tried being in two bands, didn't like it. Felt like I was spreading myself too thin. I think that's the first sentence I've ever written with the words 'I' and 'thin' in it.
Amen sir. Funniest thing I've read in ages

especially the pre-set slash and above all the towel -- if you do not have one with you, I guarantee that sweat will run into your eyes at some point and it will all go horribly wrong. A real frood always knows where his towel is
Well, I just got this at 7.30am, I simply cannot believe the quality of this bass!! The finish is flawless, the neck is as straight as an arrow and there is very little of the sharp fret edges, certainly not enough to make me want to file them down. anyway pics: <snip> It arrived with a low action and perfect intonation, can't believe it for 100 quid Pickups are what you expect for Wilkinson jazz, quite punchy and solid, I don't do honk or slap in a church so you'll have to make up your own mind about it. The tone control is very smooth and gradual in operation. Tuners are wilko's as well as is the bridge, both work very well. Weight? It's about 9.5 lbs, it's american ash body. Comes with D'Addario XL strings fer cryin' out loud, Anything I would change? hmm.. Fender sticker maybe? Nah, I'm not a name tart. So overall it's astonishing value for money, I am going to sell some of my 'better' basses now. Buy one today... no buy two!
oh god why did you have to go posting these pics? why did you have to say it's good? it'd make the perfect testbed for a few non-invasive mods too... like the very nice Schaller JBX pups I've got hanging around that are just begging to be chucked into a bass... like the various homebrewed eq types ive been experimenting with... please, please tell me it's actually a terrible bass and that i shouldnt bother getting one... please, somebody talk me out of it

Bottom
Middle (but ideally without black binding)
Top
If the body & headstock were Lake Placid or CAR, then it'd be top all the way.
Ooh yes, this is a good tip. I find that it's not so much the key to the song I need, just the note that my part starts on. Once I've played that first note I'm away.
This, exactly. I always used to write the first note I played against each song on the set list, rather than the key. It saved my bacon on a number of occasions, I can tell you. Caters for that occasional brain freeze where you suddenly realise 2 seconds before the start of the song that you cant remember what you come in on! Above all, ENJOY IT. Don't drink beforehand, have a good time during, and don't overanalyse afterwards. And we expect a full report!

A song you have always wanted to play live......
UglyDog replied to Jazzneck's topic in General Discussion
The Old Man and The Angel (It Bites). The full 10 minute version, obviously. I could then die a happy dog -
And that, my friend, is something to be very glad of!!
Yup. Who in their right mind would want to be a superb bassist, prolific songwriter and multimultimillionaire?
-
That's nice Marcus. What are you going to get to replace it?

Going to see your old bands - mixed emotions ?
I stayed for the whole gig, catching up with old mates. On my return to France, I had an e-mail accusing me of having given the guitarist "a look" and raising an eyebrow, and maybe it would be better if I didn't go to any gigs in the future when visiting the UK.
I would have been tempted to point out that it's a free country and that unless I was specifically barred from the venue I would turn up to as many gigs as I bloody well wanted to thank you very much. But then again, I'm a cantankerous old fart who hates being told what to do -
Total sphincter.
Absolutely. How dare he express any form of personal opinion? The cheek of it.
Have a good listen to Jumpin' Jack Flash.
Oh gawd, do I have to?
I doubt , though , he {Leo F} was immune to seeing how the use of his products evolved - and Fender's re-design of the original Precision and introduction of the Jazz reflects the desire to feed that evolution with more versatile instruments.
Absolutely. If Leo hadn't been particularly interested in the evolution and advancement of the instrument and its use, I doubt he'd have bothered setting up either Musicman or G&L.

Any luthier worth their salt will build you whatever you want (within reason of course). They don't all just stick to fixed models with detail differences. See the Shuker custom gallery for example.

What do we want? SOUND CLIPS! When do we want them? Errm... as soon as possible, pretty please, thank you
9/10 times I've seen this happening it's been either a faulty socket or forgetting to unplug the bass when not in use.
Yup, my money's on the socket. This happened to a bass of mine many moons ago, I couldn't work out why it was eating batteries within days until I tested the supposedly stereo jack socket and found the dead short between ring and sleeve...

Opinions on talking to audience between songs
UglyDog replied to bonzodog's topic in General Discussion
I always think it looks a bit arrogant to not talk to the audience at all, just standing there playing expecting adulation... I'd stick to what you are doing currently, sounds about right
Keep the audience banter for definite. -
Unless you managed to collect all the smoke I don't think they will be able to do anything as Ampeg do not supply replacement smoke.
I genuinely LOLed at this. I hope y'all manage to get your Ampeg issues sorted. Nothing worse than going into a gig with a real fear that your amp is going to fall over.
That I'm not a real bassist, because I go higher than the 5th fret, and "niggle" I'm obviously aware that it's pure diatribe from some poor misguided padawan. Found it hilarious as well. Discuss
Ah yes, the old Real Bass Players Don't Go Up The Dusty End theory. I've heard this quite a few times myself actually. This theory actually has a technical title -- it's known as 'A Load Of Complete And Utter BoIIocks'.
