Recommendations for a cheapo 5 String Bass?
popoctave replied to Mr Fretbuzz's topic in General Discussion
Ibanez or Yamaha - buy used and you can't go wrong; if its not for you you'll get your money back easily.
+1 for a second hand Yammie TRB5 great necks and great value for money imo. -

+1 for Guitar Guitar in Corstophine, mind you the selection of amps at the one in Brum is zero.

Nope, however was forced to use them on a defretted precision once, couldn't get a decent action with anything else, higher tension strings made the neck bend like an archers bow, sold it in the end. Strictly 40-100's now, stainless rounds on the jazz, nickel rounds on the P. Tried flats once, hated them, too sticky !

To be fair the bass players I've met have been the most sincere, humble, coolest cats and not in the slightest bit flash or arrogant. I heard that John Deacon despite all his wealth and to the amusement of his peers used to tat around in a Volvo estate, that kinda typifies it for me.
It's mainly in the eyes. We have normal ones. Not the cold dead eyes of a frontman. Not the maniacal gleam of the guitarist or the empty 1000 yard stare of the drummer. We just look like the normal person in a band.
Unless you're Sid Vicious!

Bought a bit of gumtree & preloved, but if you can't speak to someone or get a landline number and a psyhical address to collect from I'd say don't touch it with a barge pole.

think the police might be owed some royalties on this one
Just heard Bruno Mars' new single locked out of heaven has a very police/dire straits vibe to it to be honest i kinda like it thoughts?
Yeah, was thinkin exactly the same thing when I heard it in the motor today on R2, nice heavy bass, I thought she said it was Olly Mars or summat? and then I thought 'hang on should I own up to liking this', but yeah it floats my boat. -
Larry Graham - bass playing equivalent of Jimi Hendrix?
popoctave replied to paulconnolly's topic in General Discussion
So would it be more reasonable to say that Jaco = Hendrix but Graham = Les Paul? Both Graham and Les Paul established the instrument in terms of influencing future players but Hendrix like Jaco pushed the envelope of what could be done with electric guitars?
Les Paul established the Les Paul, Jaco established the fretless but LG INVENTED FUNK as we know it. -
Post your pictures, Lets see what you all look like.

I'd agree that LG was the first to exploit the electrification of the bass, Jaco pushed it on then, on more of a virtuoso thing, not as easy on the ear or as popular as his forebearer though. -
If you're worried get it serviced beforehand, I wouldn't waste money renting one, I mean what can go wrong with a bass, apart from said flat battery above.

Here you go chap....enjoy :-) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7K62hTCJVY

Fook me Bill Nelson now there's a blast from the past, I could trump that with Music for Chameleons though

At the risk of hijacking the thread (bo11ocks to it I didn't know Mick had died), yes this is Japan, as I remember them anyway... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DhnMWfv2Us
You can see where I have to rake on here hopefully?
It's just goin up and down the strings one after another Karn plays fretless as well which does help a bit getting round the fretboard I think, crackin player his early Japan stuff is knockout.
It is the RITF 25 anniversary tour so their is a strong hint in the name of the tour as to what a chunk of the set will be.
Granted, the tickets were a birthday present I wouldn't have wasted the money myself.
