Shoot me down here - but is the process of setting up made to look more complicated than it actually is? There's no doubt that a well set up guitar plays a million times better but I'm not sure there's an alchemy to it. I've paid for a couple of "pro" setups and been really underwhelmed with the results. So much so, I've had to get the allen key out and tweak it myself. I'm no expert and it's a bit of trial and error but I've managed to straighten the neck, set the action and intonation and adjust the pickup height without calling an ambulance!
I know that it is a P bass in the verse and Stingray in the chorus.
Great bassline - it's a bit nerdy to use two basses though!

3 well recorded tracks with good clear vocals is all you need. Something that sounds polished rather than raw. We spent £150 and recorded 6 tracks in a day at a small studio. Your band will get hired on how good the vocalist sounds, so vocals are top priority, I reckon. Condenser mic in a studio type setting - rather than shouting down an SM58.

Any Reef fans? Put your hands up. (sic)
is this only open for attendees of the bash? Giving and receiving?
Makes sense that it should be. It's a crap raffle, if no-one's there to collect any prizes! Will add something to the list shortly!

What notes can I play over a B7 Chord
stingrayfan replied to Linus27's topic in Theory and Technique
Root, fifth, octave. -
Just to stoke the fire some more.... How many of us have bought an expensive 'brand' bass despite the fact that it didn't feel that nice and was a bit heavy to gig with? I know I have.

Asking for PM offers in the "For Sale" section.

It's difficult knowing what the market value is for stuff, if people don't put prices to things. Personally, I prefer it out in the open. If you're selling something, say what you want for it! -
Don't set your levels so they feel weird then! Alex
They're set so they're good out front.
Advice: Learn to play the bass part entirely mechanically, so you only really think about the singing. Singing should be 90% of your effort, the bass part should mostly take care of itself. Being super-familiar with the tune you're playing makes this easy
+ the 1.
Don't dismiss the beatles too much, some of Macca's basslines that he sung over aren't all that simple. I can happily play All My Loving, I can sing it. Both together? hopeless...
Funnily enough, was thinking the same thing the other night while watching that docco about the Beatles' first trip to America. He's playing some complex bass parts and singing lead over the top, with no stage monitors and at one point, his bass amp facing the other way! Makes you realise how spoiled we all are now, worrying about whether to get in-ears or personal monitors.
We agree to turn down, then one of the guitarists turns up for a solo and doesn't go back down again afterwards ...
This is the problem I've got. We soundcheck, levels are set (even if they feel weird to us), then lo and behold, we're three songs in and I can see him turning around to turn up. He's then louder and then it all starts getting mushy as the vocals get lost in a wall of distorted guitar. Sometimes I have to shout at him to turn down inbetween songs, which looks crap.
There's an obscene amount of amps on that list, so I'd like to revise my equipment list to: 18. peted - Warwick Thumb BO 4, Squier MIJ modded Precision, Shuker Singlecut 6 fanned fret (if it's ready by then, but I'm not holding my breath)
+1 - I might just bring a few basses.
Volume wars are bad! Play together.
Could I give you the number of my guitarist? Been trying to explain that for the last two years!

Not sure it's that scientific. Everyone's got their own difference likes and dislikes and sometimes you pick up a bass, play it and just think, "Nah..." Also with tone; one man's meat....
-
Save your cash! I play in a three piece and don't use any pedals or FX.

Bass Lines that everyone plays different

The solo in My Generation. -
Dorking, Surrey. Tiny pub but packed 10 deep. By set two, they were leaping around and singing. Good mixed aged crowd which seemed to like all our tunes (we do indie, post punk, new wave etc). Loud gig in a sleepy town. For those who've never been, Dorking's biggest claim to fame is having a giant silver cock. On a roundabout.

Curiosity Killed The Cat. Yes, really.
-
The sound I got at the last gig would do me as a keeper. It wasn't anywhere special - just a pub - but I must have been in some sort of slight-raised-wooden-floor sweetspot. Will I hear it at the next gig? Will I hell....

MAJOR LABEL ARTIST seeks bassist (17-24)
Apparently he's an international Myspace sensation, despite the fact no-one's heard of him: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Brooks_(singer) Smells like astroturf... J.
Sure that's a bit of marketing spin but just because someone's not on Later With Jools Holland, doesn't mean they're not selling tickets and downloads. Good luck to him. -
Thanks for the very kind words and no problem at all - you can source the rack ears (with fixing screws) in the US at British Audio Service: http://www.britishaudioservice.com/shop_main_trace.shtml They're about $20 but I think there's a minimum charge of $40 for overseas orders. I'll see if I can find anything in the UK (it should be much cheaper)
That's where I got mine. They shipped 'em on their own if I remember correctly.

Mowac - that does look the business. Trying to imagine what I'd look like gigging a pink Jaydee in an indie covers band though.... Er, maybe not. Shame - it looks like fun.
