If anyone wants to be successful at any almost anything confidence and experience is the key. To do stuff when then don't have the confidence requires bravery and the ability to distinguish between actual and imagined risks. So...smell the fear then do it anyway.
Failing that, just learn blues scales.
 2.
Something strange happened to me on the way, I’ve never felt it before but I was actually nervous – I don’t do nervous.
Haha - I know exactly where you're coming from Al. I did an open mic last year on guitar and felt exactly the same. It was weird - done loads of gigs without feeling any nerves - but this was horrible. I also did another one on bass and like you felt out of my depth. I mentioned this to the frontman of my band who's played hundreds of gigs in loads of different bands. He hates going to them too!
 3. Tempting.
 4. Great gigging basses these. Don't put off by the switches, they're pretty simple but allow you to get a P, J or Stingray sound with a quick flick. The pre-amp really cuts through the mix.
 5. Bit of shameless self-promotion, me thinks.
 6. Lovely discussion - but this is the for sale section!
 7. +1 to all of the above. Esp the bit about feel. Make sure it feels really nice to play. If it doesn't, put it back and try another.
 8.

That was a tasty one.
 9. I'm currently gigging a Trace combo and Trace head which I run through a Warwick cab. Both sound great - the head and cab have the edge and sound huge. The combo doesn't take much fiddling to sound good though - click the pre-shape in and adjust an EQ balance dial to add aome extra bite and you're away. The stuff is a bit heavy (wheels are your friend) but the sound is great. You can plug anything into them and make it sound good. Be aware though that old stuff (like old cars) does tend to visit amp techs on a regular basis! I'd recommend starting off with one of the old 15" combos on here. They make great pub gig amps. The old 4x10 combos sound ace but are very heavy. Don't get hung up on the 'pre-Gibson' argument, in my experience all the old stuff seems to be good.
 10. It's certainly a one-off!
 11. Anyone know why he recorded with a Yamaha but played live with a Fender?
 12.
The word on the web seems to be far east (Korea and/or Indonesia)... although that's not a bad thing unless you are snobby about it.
I'm a reverse snob, so that's got me interested!
 13.
Have any of you guys got to the point where you think your bass gear is better than you are (or even worse - could be)? Don't get me wrong I love to play on a really nice bass but when you go to the odd jam night and someone plays the hell out of a £100 bass does it make you feel like leaving your £1000 baby in the gig bag and hacking about on the 'house bass'?
Haha - I've been to a jam night like that. Left the Stingray in its case and played the Squier Jazz - worse than the guy before me. It was all blues blah blah anyway, not my bag. Interesting to note though (with ref to another thread about stage sound) that when I stood out the front it sounded great, when I stood next to the cab it sounded muddier than Muddy Waters. Back to the topic - think my current stable of G&L Tribute, Yamaha BB and second hand Trace stuff suits me nicely!
 14. I wouldn't beat yourself up about your sound too much. As long as you've got a powerful enough set-up, it's usually the room that makes the difference. If it's brickwalls and empty, it'll never sound as good as a full pub. Played a wedding in a wine cellar recently and it was so "live" it sounded like I was playing underwater!
 15.
Well this turned out to be a complete waste of time and effort - contacted him 4 or 5 times and even offered to come and collect the whole lot from his doorstep and he didn't bother getting back in contact with me
What a muppet! (Him, not you)
 16.
What made you the bassist you are today?
Playing the drums first.
Who do you think had the biggest influences on how you play now?
Sadly, I think it was the funk-tinged pop of the 80s. I stop a lot of notes!
Where do you think you want to go from here?
The pub please. Who's buying?
Why do you think you want to go there?
The beer's cold.
Do you believe you have a "personality" on the bass?
Yep - GSOH. 17. Nice bass - can't cope with 5 bangers though - too confusing!
 18.
Maybe you need to try some other basses, including the cheaper end of the market, to see of there's something there that works for you
Good advice there Paul_C. I've passed on MIA and MIJ Fenders and recently a lovely Musicman because I simply now get more of a kick playing "cheaper" basses at my gigs.
 19. There's a guy on ebay called Dazbootman who makes them to order and ships from the States. He's got a clear one HERE but the £ against the $ dollar means they're expensive at the mo.
 20. Pictures please!
 21. +1 There aint no mythical Precision at the low-end of the rainbow!
 22. Still got mine - great for home practice. So easy to play.
 23. Played this Ibanez RD900 earlier today: http://www.guitarvillage.co.uk/product-det...Sunburst%2C+New Looks like they're now discontinued. Shame because it played really well. Nice feel to it - slim neck. Like the Roadster style headstock too.
