I've got a Status neck on my Stingray which feels really nice. Factor in around £400 for that unless you want to drill the machine head holes and fit it yourself. Quite a bit of dosh. ...esp as I still end up gigging the G&L!

Musicmans are great secondhand buys at the mo. Try before you buy though - because they are heavy - esp Stingrays. Great live basses though. Edit: Worth checking out G&L Tributes too. The L2000 is a good blend of Stingray and Precision.

+1 on BBs. Great gigging basses, great neck and good tone. People say the BB414's the one to get. Not sure about that pickguard though! I swapped the bridge (which is poor) for a Gotoh with no hassle at all.

Not an Ashdown fan either, but it sounds like they treated you well and gave good service. Top marks! Edit: and many of them are ex-Trace Elliot, so double points.

Try the bigger stores in city centres - like [url="http://www.pmtonline.co.uk/"]PMT[/url] or [url="http://www.reverb-store.co.uk/"]Reverb[/url]. There are still good local stores around like [url="http://www.andertons.co.uk"]Andertons[/url] in Guildford.

The older ones weren't as well made (some of the later ones were slapped together out of the parts bin when Leo Fender has a big bust up with MusicMan) but people seem to think there's more heritage to them. A bit like old Fenders. Also there's a bit of snobbishness about Ernie Ball taking over and churning them out (albeit to a higher standard). If you pick up a good old one, they often have that 'worn in' feel which makes them better to play but that's true of any bass, I think. In the 80/90s, people apparently sniffed at the poor quality 70s Fenders, now they're coveted as vintage!

Rated at 500w, it should be giving you a clean sound whatever the head.
