1. BTW: great website & portfolio Paul H. Impressive stuff.
2. Do you gig your SXs? Do they stand up to the rigours of gigging ok?
3. Hi Alz Welcome here and welcome back to the UK, when you come. You'll find despite the smoking ban etc, live music's and gigging's pretty good at the moment. What's the gigging scene like in Dubai? Good places to play?
4. +1 on that. I think Stingrays also benefit from really a good set-up. Every one I play seems to play better than mine does!
5. Sound aside, it's worth considering whether they survive gigging. I bought some spares from Thomann and although they look the part (moulded plugs etc) they're already starting to crackle. Whereas the leads I got a while ago from Award-Session with Neutrik connectors on are still good, despite being stood on and gigged for a year or two. As a result, I wont use the Thomann ones for gigs, don't trust them.
6. Never tried one with a piezo but also never seen the need for it - the Stingray tone's the Stingray tone for me. Did you like the one you played? If you're in the market for one, it's a great time to buy as 2nd hand prices are very low. You can get a nice one for £600 at the mo.
7.
Really good fun actually! Just Reading O'Neills, but there was a lot of vibe onstage, I had a great tone onstage, crowd were up for it! Cracking! Si
What's Reading O'Neills like? Recommend it? We're looking for some new loud and lively bars to play. Would you be kind enough to PM me the person to contact please? Cheers, Matt
8. +1 for £300. They're not the easiest to get hold of, so that bumps the price up but you could import one in from the US inc shipping and taxes for just over £400. Buy it - you won't be disappointed if you like the sound of a Stingray.
9. A beer festival in Sussex. Chucking it down with rain and we were in the middle of the bill but we still enjoyed it. They provided all the PA and free beer which was good. Got a recording from the sound desk too which was a bonus. It actually sounded ok! Typical Britain though - grey clouds yesterday, blue skies today....
10. Westone Thunder 1-A. Still got it!
11. Looks quite nice through a pair of sunglasses...
12. I think the bass looks amazing. I've been after a crappy Jazz copy that's been additionally bodged by a DIY fumbler for quite some time now. I'm going to bid £7500 and ask him to end early.
13. Doesn't sap my creativity at all. I play great basslines to audiences that love the songs and get paid for it. If we get bored of a song we drop it and learn some new ones. The originals I can play around with at home in my own time!
14.
Bet no-one told him he sounded woolly
He'd have sounded better plugged into the Trace Elliot stuff on the next stand, I reckon.... Anyone got a long lead?
15. Playing around with Garage Band on the Mac and recorded a bit of reggae bassplaying on my Yamaha BB614. DI'd it straight into the computer and then added the "reggae bass" FX setting with a bit of reverb. Really pleased with the sound, even if there are a couple of fluffs with the playing. Sounds great for a bass that cost £280 new. See what you think:
16. Amy Winehouse, Ben Folds and a reggae track I made on GarageBand....
17. Mine kept falling out from the car to the venue, so I screwed in permanent ones. Not noticed any difference in bass response tbh.
18. Yeah, saw the cutaway. Thought it sounded good too (albeit through a pair of crappy 80s Walkman style headphones). The white one looks like an iPod! Most disappointing thing was the complete lack of G&L. Found one Tribute hanging on the FCN stand at the back of acoustic room. If only they'd pull their finger out and get these into shops at a decent price, they might sell a few more!
19.
I do like the look of these Yamaha basses:
I tried those too and really liked them. Sharp looks and nice to play. Colour matched headstock and neck and very light - they're some sort of composite of woods that makes them really light. I like throwing my bass around a bit when I play live, so this appeals. Nice to see something a bit futuristic in a world where almost every bass design seems based on a Precision or Jazz. Good show too. Much much bigger than previous years and a lot more of a buzz about it. Excel's not the easiest venue to get to, but it's good. Clean and modern with plently of places to get a beer and a sandwich. Drum hall was cool too - they had quiet and loud times. The loud time (when people could play the kits) was deafening. Had a blast on a Mapex 5-piece in a demo room. I want one! There also seemed to be lots of demos and seminars going on, which gave it all a bit of substance. Oh, and Lakland fans, I noticed that they're now being distributed by the people who handle PRS guitars, so expect to see more Skylines in the shops soon...
20.
...but do pub chains work differently?
If the manager's booking you, it's pretty much the same as dealing with a landlord. The only thing he'll probably do is ask you to sign some paperwork at the end of the gig which makes you liable for tax. Make sure it's not you that signs every one for obvious reasons. It might also be worth contacting one of the regular bands who play the venue (if they exist) to see what they get paid per gig, to check you're getting the going rate.
21.
i'd stick with it - the Corts are nice basses and i would imagine good to learn on. Despite it being active and having lots of 'bells and whistles' none of that should really interfere with you learning to play.
+1. That bass could help you learn and then be used to gig with. With all basses when the strings get old, take a new pack and the bass to a good guitar shop and ask them to do a set-up on the bass. Should cost about £40 but it'll make it feel much nicer to play.
22. Well done Nik. Any of those dates suits. Backline in Guildford is fine too.
