1. As long as every band knows their call and stage times and have all been warned not to overrun, then cut the PA and pull the plug. It's a good lesson.
2. Agree that it depends what type of band you are (hobby or function) and what type of venue. Only discount if it will be fun/you know the landlord/regulars etc etc. It is a great gig but a long night usually with a horrific get out as you try to negotiate through the drunks to load up the cars. It's usually like trying to pick your way past the zombies in Shaun Of The Dead. Last year, I remember pushing my bass cab into the hallway of the venue only for a drunk bloke to immediately sit on it and carry on his loud conversation with his mate. How rude! Edit: and to answer your Q - we're a three piece covers band and charged £900 in venue that normally pays £250. It's also the one gig where you need to negotiatate stuff in advance like a free bar tab for band and free entry for WAGs.
3.
never say Never
That should be the strapline for the Buying/Selling section on this site...
4.
And, it goes without saying (for a Fenderholic like me, anyway)... Chicago Music Exchange!
That place looks amazing. Never thought of going to Chicago before - need to find an excuse now!
5. In LA - nr Sunset/La Brea there's the Hollywood branch of Guitar Center. Most guitarists in LA bands will have shopped there at some point, so defo worth a visit. It's all run of the mill stuff, but seek out their vintage section in the basement and laugh at the ridiculous prices. There's a Sam Ash over the road too which does more quirky stuff. Trying/buying guitars is a much more pleasureable thing in the States - they actually want to help you! Enjoy...
6. If I didn't have a wedding gig in Kent, I'd be joining you all to chew the fat. Enjoy....
7. +1. Never understood why they didn't carry on the block inlays and bound necks as a standard feature on jazzes. They look great.
8.
I now find myself using the auxilliary XLR socket more, though I also find this a bit temperamental unless the headstock has been thoroughly soaked in gin.
Tried spraying on some switch cleaner first?
9.
I now use cheap travel suitcases with pull handles and wheels you get at Tescos, soft ones or hard ones . We use a large hard one for the snake and I use a couple of smaller ones for drums mic cables and one for general PA cabling.
Bet it looks like you're off on your holidays when you rock up for a gig.
10. Hows about getting one of these flight cases and fitting wheels to it? http://www.thomann.de/gb/thon_zubehoercase..._28_schwarz.htm
11. I really fancy offering you some cash for the Trace Elliot head Chris but I can't see me getting to MK anytime soon to pick it up. Frustrating!

Blues

You play drums and bass on this? Good work. Sounds nice.
13. I'm guessing said bass player hasn't discovered: 1. The internet 2. Google 3. This website!
14. Hi - is the head an amp or just a pre-amp? If it's an amp, what's the wattage please? Also - got a ballpark figure in mind for the rig? Cheers
15. Saw a really good blues/rock band the other night. Bass player had a Stingray 4 and an old Peavey rig, connected with a curly lead. Went and spoke to him afterwards and asked him about his gear and he said he'd not changed it for 20 years. I was gobsmacked. I can't go more than a couple of months without replacing some of my stuff! I guess if it ain't broke, don't fix it...

17. So-so gig in a pub with crap acoustics. Playing a narrow room so couldn't turn the PA up without getting feedback. Bass cab was on a hollow stage so it was booming all over the place too. Had a nice crowd in who wanted to watch rather than dance for the mainstay which always kills it a bit for me. Biggest annoyance was the pub though, who hadn't bothered promoting the fact we were on. You've got to have the bad ones mind, to make the good nights, good.
18.
Dep gig on Wednesday for my Drummer's other band. Pretty simple stuff until some guy asks for Hey Joe. I've never played it before but know the song pretty well. The guitarist tells me what key and the chors structure and off we go. Anyway, it goes down really well and the guitarist tells me I'm the easiest bass player he's ever played with and offered him more support than he's ever had during his solo. Found out on Friday that they want me to join full time!! Not a bad result for a guy who could hear his P Bass through most of the gig (see other post). Maybe that's the secret; don't listen to what you're playing!!
Result! Well done. It's nice to be appreciated.
19. Any joy with getting a snap of the TE head yet please?
20. Michele Stodart from the Magic Numbers is a great player. Listen to "Undecided" on their most recent album, it's really clever. Apparently she only learned to play a few years ago.
21. USPS is the cheapest ($70-100) but you WILL get stung for import tax and VAT (add 20% to purchase and shipping price). It will arrive via Parceforce who will ask for payment before they release it.
22. Hey Luke - tracks sound great. You're locking in really nicely with your drummer which gives it loads of energy. Good tone too although I'd maybe stick with LX5 for everything as the sound is really good. Drummer's great too - really tight and loads of energy. Good work!
