1. I learned that price doesn't always count when it comes to finding a good bass to gig with. I now use a £350 Indonesian made G&L over my US Stingray, simply because it sounds better, is lighter and is more fun to play.
2. Nice looking bass - have a bump on me!
3.
About 100... a decrease on on previous years when I've averaged about 130. We're doing less pub gigs which accounts for the difference.
100? I thought I was busy having done 21. You guys must be doing 2-3 a week.
4.
I spent a hour trying to figure out, what turned out to be a simple 4 note fill.
Treat yourself to this bit of software. It allows you to slow down MP3 and iTunes files to learn the songs. It's brilliant and well worth the £20 it costs. It even lets you shift the pitch up and down by semitones so you can learn stuff in different keys to the original. Hope that helps.
5.
Bass Centre sells this blonde chunk of wood for 1400£, The Bass Gallery for 1500£, I'm selling for 300£ or more less than the smallest price I've written below and it's a mint condition bass.
Hmm...not sure it quite works like that. Shops charge more because they sell brand new stuff with sales tax and have overheads. You're a private seller, selling something second-hand. Good luck with the sale though.
6. NYE gig in a packed bar to 300 last night. Great 2nd set - everyone was really up for it. We went for it! Finished at 1120 and were packed away in the cars by 1155 to see the New Year in. Getting the stuff from the stage to the car through the crowd was a nightmare though. By that time of night, they were so trolleyed, it was like the final scenes from 'Shaun Of The Dead'. Great gig though.
7.
What you describe as 'terrible sound' is pure bliss to the ears of others. Thank goodness there are all sorts of basses/strings etc to enable a wide palette of sounds.
Apologies - should add that that's only my opinion - you're absolutely right!
8. Really sorry to hear this. I hope all the gear electrocutes the little b****rs.
9. Sounds really dead and woolly, doesn't it? But he's got a definite feel there. You can also hear the James Jamerson influences too. Talking of which, there are also Jamerson solo tracks on that site too. Check out What's Goin' On. Again, terrible sound but what a bassline.
10. I'm gobsmacked that this hasn't shifted. IMHO, it's a better SR5. Suggest Ebay. Listing only costs 10p today (Sat).
11. Perfect for someone starting out. Nice gesture.
12. Hello and welcome from another just over the border in Fleet in Hants.
13. If you're only doing covers in pubs or small venues, a 4x10 will prob be more than enough. Plus you'll look a bit daft wheeling in a huge cab into a small pub! The Warwick stuff's good for the money and will do the trick but it's not the loudest stuff you'll ever use (and the heads are pretty heavy). MarkBass or Trace Elliot stuff is louder (but also more expensive). Amps and cabs are huge heavy things, so it really pays to check them out in the flesh before you part with your hard earned. Another plus for the Warwick is that you can order the cabs as 4-ohm, making them work a bit louder. Hope that helps. PM me for any more info on what the Warwick stuff's like. PS. Where in the country are you? There might be someone on here near you who would let you try out their set-up
14. Mine very lo-tech in comparison to some of the 5u racks on here. Does the job fine but I'd still prefer an 8x10 fridge!
15. I don't mind the heated debates if it's bass or music related and not childish. I roll my eyes more at some of the off-topic stuff that wouldn't make the cut on a coffee morning.
16. This is up on YouTube now if you want to watch. Great funky sound from Mr Zender on a P bass. Just goes to show, it's all in the fingers.
17. I'm hearing Hondo and Kay are in a bidding war for the Nik'sBurningOrgan signature bass... Like Nik does, you'll be able to swap it for something different every three months.
18. Is he the fella that used to play in 80s jazz-funkers "Morrissey Mullen"? If so, great player.
19.
I wonder where people tend to be drawn with regards their GAS or their need for a new instrument.
I tend look at basses first. I guess we're "bass players" after all rather than "amp players". Amps are more functional, I guess.
20. Stumbled on this - a page of bass pictures from last year's NAMM show. Enjoy! Edit: check out that wine red Stingray about half the way down the page. I've got Xmas GAS.
21. It's usually the musician not wanting to plug the product for whatever reason. The BBC don't normally stick gaffer tape over amps and the like. Does beg the question - why play the bass?
22.
Its possibly the best jazz bass I have ever played and thats saying something. I am really hoping that I can now just stop switching basses every few months :-)
Nice thought but we all know the truth, eh? Tasty looking bass though. Said it before, but it's funny how we start off with Fender copies and crave the real thing, then buy the real thing and end up craving more expensive copies...
23. This sounds like a good idea - but might be a lot of effort just to do what a cheap 6-way extension lead would do. Not knocking it though, let us know if you go for it.
24. Hurrah. How you can enjoy your G&L again! Glad you got it sorted.
