For me a bass has to be new & shiny and not look as though it's been dragged kicking & screaming behind the gig van as opposed to in it! But more importantly, it has to work with me when I'm playing, rather than making playing an uphill struggle.
Good man! Thought was just me who didn't get the vintage thing. I can see the eye candy appeal but the playability of old instruments is a bit of a battle. Each to his/her own though. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that.

"Do you know Wonderful Tonight?"
stingrayfan replied to Old Horse Murphy's topic in General Discussion
Once played a set of right up to the minute indie stuff for a student gig - Killers, Kooks, Chilis etc. Then two of them come up and say: "Do you know One & Only by Chesney Hawkes? That's our favourite." -
It's run by the Music Industries Association and I've heard really good things about it. There's a TV piece about it here: http://www.mia.org.uk/docs/media/sky_281005.wmv

I'm rehearsing in Guildford on Sat morning so might be able to poke my head in for an hour or so now. Any special requests for me to bring anything? I might bring all three basses including my new G&L if anyone fancies a go?
How about Mark Bedford (Bedders) from Madness?
Good call, some of his stuff is really clever. If you've got a spare hour, try learning the line to "It Must Be Love". It's really clever with tons of feel. I love playing that one live. Also would offer up Andrew Levy from the Brand New Heavies. Check out the band's "Brother Sister" album for great examples of how to play in the pocket.

Pack of strings for £2.89! Got to be rubbish, surely. Or has anyone tried them? Maybe good as kit bag spares? http://www.sticksnstringsnthings.com/acata...CFQQdEgodcBXTOQ

No story to top any so far but FWIW, I did once make a Hen Party scream every time I hit a low F. Mainly because they were sat on a raised wooden floor by the side of the stage and were getting the vibrations. In the break they asked me to play more low notes. The F spot, clearly.

Wharefedale Vocal Mics x3 for £40
stingrayfan replied to stingrayfan's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Sure they'll be fine as spares... -
Aphex Punch Factory pedal for £50 s/h or £80 new and then get covers/cases for your kit.

Cover Over Covers. Have made me three now and I'd order again. Do bespoke thick padded covers from your measurements with the logo printed on the front for about 40 quid. They have a website - but are a bit stuck in the dark ages. Phone them directly and fax over a drawing of your cab. They'll also add velcro'd side flaps if you ask. Not the fastest turnaround (allow 2 weeks) but the results are very good. Survives being dragged in an out of cars and keeps the cabs really clean. www.coverovercovers.co.uk and ask for Barry.
It's a Status Vintage GP - with 'GP' being Guy Pratt: http://www.status-graphite.com/ (can't add a direct link easily as the awful Status site uses frame sets - but there's info about the whole range there) Nice looking bass - but I just can't get my head around the whole plastic neck thing.
Don't mind the plastic neck - it's the horrible 51 Precision style body it's attached to. And semi acoustic. Ugh! It's like a FrankenFender. They're ugly enough as is! *ducks for cover*

Does he put his sunglasses on and say "MB1" before he starts speaking? Hehe...

Welcome to another rock & punk coverer! Be warned though - this site has the ability to make you buy and sell your gear at an alarming pace. It won't be long before you're editing that gear list...

I think it's a bit unfair to knock Soundcontrol. They're a mainstream dealer trying to cater to everyone and they do it pretty well I think. So that means, you're not going to get a go on a Ken Smith, a free latte and a three hour chat about boutique woods and Ampeg fliptops. That's for small places that no-one can find, like the Gallery in Camden. Most bass players, me included, just want mainstream stuff at good prices. I don't live near a Souncontrol, so I always like going into the stores, like I just have in Edinburgh. For my money, they have a really good range of stuff at good prices. All the staff seemed friendly and happy to offer advice and let me try stuff. The shops seem to be geared to selling to "people" rather than "musicians" and they don't tut when you ask for help. Try asking to try a Stingray into say, an Ampeg at the Bass Cellar et al, in Denmark Street in London and count the sighs. Good luck to you Soundcontrol, hope the business is going well.

Soundcontrol knocking out a 3-pack of Wharefedale SM58 type vocal mics, with mic clips, in a hard case for £40. I bought a set as spares. Would prob be fine as main mics for a pub covers band though. Feel heavyweight. Decided against it in the end as we now rehearse in a place that provides backline (w/90s Trace Elliot 4x10, nice) so in reality I wouldn't have used it. If it had been a straight 500w, might have taken a punt.

3-pack of Hartke strings for 5-string bass for under £20! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/3-Sets-Hartke-50-135...VQQcmdZViewItem Just bought some and they seem fine. Can't vouch for them longterm as I've only just put the first set on, but bearing in mind the price of 5-string sets, defo worth a punt.
Id imagine itll go for a bit more than 450GBP-- they go for around 800/900EU over here---looks good although green wouldnt be my first choice.
Went for £460 in the end. Someone got a good deal!
I bought a mid-90s Encore neck on the Bay a while back. Fitted it to an old Marlin body that previously had a Squier neck. It was tight (I think the Encore neck is a coat-of-paint bigger than a Squier/Fender one) but it worked. And then I made this out of them.
Very punk - cool!

It is a Status Vintage - he mentions it in his book. My Bass & Other Animals. Just started reading it, it's quite good and fleshes out the stories he tells in his stand-up show. In one chapter he talks about being stuck at some dull chintzy hotel in New Zealand whilst touring with Aussie band Icehouse and for a prank, they put a sheep in one of the crew's room as a surprise.
He is after buying an aerodyne jazz, but I can't help but feeling he will get better for his money.
He could have had mine for £400!
