That's a great call. It's so clever, you don't really notice how much is going on but it's like a bass lesson in one song. Would advise people to go re-listen to it.

In same vein, check out "Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine" or "Somebody Told Me" from the Killers' first album [i]Hot Fuss[/i]. You can tell that guy grew up listening to The Smiths!

Travis: "Why Does It Always Rain On Me" is a narcolepsy special. Credit to the guy for not overplaying, but it's dull as ditchwater, when you come to play it live!

Loads of people use Slinkys I think. Anyway it's all personal taste. There's no Holy Grail of strings!

PC w/iTunes and bass into ---> Behringer 4 ch mixer ---> Micro hi-fi. Works surprisingly well!

I'd agree with that. It's also not so hot with active basses - but seems to work a treat with passive ones (Ps & Js etc). You kinda need to set it up "just so" too, so one more thing to worry about when you gig.

Aphex Xciter also does similar thing but for half the price.

Re-reading this thread I think there's also another point to be made - depends whether you're doing a band for a hobby or to make a living. If it's a living, you are by definition, a professional musician and so should be charging more. If it's a sideline, you can afford to discount a bit if you like the sound of the gigs.

Tried taking it for a decent set-up? Can make a world of difference. Failing that, see if you can get your hands on/try out a SansAmp Bass Driver pedal or an Aphex Xciter. Both may let you dial in the punchy sound your after.

Failing that - go get a Stingray!

Don't get me wrong - I'm proud to be a leftie. Just back in 1984, I made a decision based on what I could see in the guitar shop! It now feels weird to hold a guitar the other way around.

Agree with that. It's a bit crap but does cut down on the number of demo CDs you have to post out to prespective punters. Other thing is that it rates higher in Google than a normal website would.

And I gigged mine last night for the first time and it was great. Not as much bite as my Stingray but much more range. Did a great grindy Precision/Rickenbacker sound on the bigger songs too. Will use it again! Set the inbuilt EQ to: Bass +80, Mid 0%, Treble +100%

Feel for you with the lack of choice thing - I often notice it in guitar shops.

One of the places we play at also use those all-in-one systems and it's great. Don't bother with PAR cans - getting them in the car is a real pain and they take up loads on room on stage.

Back using EB Slinkys after trying ProSteels, Rotos & Elites. Gone off stainless steel, think I prefer nickels now. Smoother on the fingers!
