    Here is the body from an early 80s Hondo II professional H-1015 that became a neck donor for a Frankenstein bass. No idea of the wood but it is wood, not MDF, and HEAVY at 3.2kg. Gloss black finish in pretty good nick - a few scuffs and scratches but no major dings. Standard size Precision pickup routing, wiring loom and knobs still in situ, as are strap buttons. Neck pocket is 70mm deep, 57mm wide and 28mm thick. Three mounting points for a Gibson-style 3-point bridge are embedded into the body in place for a MEDIUM SCALE 32" neck. There is plenty of room in the body to move a new bridge backwards for a 34" scale neck to be fitted, if that floats your boat (for which this could be used as an anchor as it is heavy). This would be absolutely perfect for modding as it would give you a Precision bass sound but, with the double cutaway, a completely different look to a Fender. I imagine a long scale neck is unlikely to make it neck dive because the body is, erm, heavy. Asking just £25 including postage. A decent chunk of which would go on posting as it is heavy. Collect from Benfleet in Essex for £15 and I'll help you into the car with it. Oh, and it is heavy.

    Daft question - with the dual output, I get that you can do different things with the two outputs if you want but are they the same or is the output split in some way?

    I buy rubber washers on eBay that are made as strap locks, which have a bigger hole in that the beer bottle washers. I find the beer bottle washers a bit tight and inevitably make my fingers and thumbs really sore trying to stretch them over the button head. Like this.

    Wide straps, balance etc all help but - for me - weight is the ultimate issue as it is for a lot of folks with various back issues. Again - for me - 9lbs is the absolute limit but I still pay for it next day. 8lbs is my aim, less is even better. It is one reason for loving my new Gibson Les Paul Jnr DC, it is only around 7.5lbs. My new Frankenstein 'Honcore' is under 7lbs. Despite the extra wood in the neck and hardware it is perfectly possible to get light weight 5ers. The choice is rather narrow, though. I have a Maruszczyk Jake 5 that weighs 8lbs. I have a modded Sterling 5 that is less, maybe 7.5, but that is down to one pup with passive electrics so a lot of metal has gone. Worth a look at headless/bodiless basses, too - I had a Hohner BV that was also lightweight, as was a Yamaha BX-5.

    Your experience mirrors mine in many ways. Love this place, it is the lens through which I view the world. I think Mrs S is sick of my continual 'there's this bloke on Basschat who says...' references. And, at the end of it all, what else would I spend my money on if not for the classifieds?

    +1. With my new found knowledge I can say with 70% confidence that is a 4003 in Jetglo. Perhaps. Or maybe a 4001? Blast.

    Thank you! That probably covers it all in enough detail. If I were in the market for one - and I am still not sure - the simple answer would be try and try until you find one you like. Next question - do any of the fakers actually sound like the real thing?

    Thanks for that. My deliberate mistake was asking if there was ever a 4001, when i meant a 4002 but i guess yo have answered that as you don't mention one.
