Narrow spaced Precision pickup options? For 5 string
Paul S replied to fretmeister's topic in Bass Guitars
...not being able to name a single 5 string P bass with 22 frets and 17.5mm spacing)
Or lightweight. That is exactly why I had the change made to my Sterling. Best of both worlds, I'd say. -
Reminds me a lot of my very first bass, an old Squier Bronco...to the point that it makes me wonder what the difference is between the two? Has there been some cheeky re-badging going on, or has my memory of the Bronco faded with time?
Bronco and Vista Series Musicmasters are chalk and cheese. Vista Series were a limited run of quality retro styled instruments made in China. Up there with some of the better (but not best) Japanese Squiers. If you google 'Squier Vista Series' you will see a lot of love for them - I had one, it was fab. Better than the Fender Musicmaster I also owned.

I don't want to sell this and will turn down any offers of cash. But. I would trade it for a Yamaha BB5000, such is the strength of my GAS. If anyone isn't tempted by money but might be tempted by something delicious, then I offer up this delightful morsel. Depending upon condition we can talk cash adjustment either way. An extremely early JV Squier '57 re-issue Precision with Fender logo. Serial no. JV02XXX. It is not perfect, but in extremely good condition - couple of dings and scratches but beautifully shiny in tobacco burst. My oh my the colour of the neck has to be seen - warm caramel. There is a non-faded white patch on the, now cream, scratch plate where a sticker once was. The pups are not original to the bass but are vintage correct JV raised pole jobbies. All wiring is cloth covered and rest of the electrics are original. Sounds exactly how you would expect one of these to sound, weighs around 8.5lbs and the neck is a delight - 42mm at the nut and shallow - with very little fret wear. Currently strung with DR High Beams which give it a huge amount of bite. A few pics - I can take more if required. These early Fender logo JVs are quite hard to come by, sought after and collectible and this is a cracker.

My small band started playing Sultans of Swing recently despite protestations by guitarist that it has been done to death over the years. It never fails to get a huge cheer. Here's my favourite off the first album, played with a great groove live a long while ago... http://youtu.be/XEl7devfqdc

Anyone got a Fender Mustang bass, opinions please
Paul S replied to jembullo's topic in Bass Guitars
can you play funk on a Mustang? Damned right... this is what they sound like. http://youtu.be/bSq93Hsn0Bg -
Might go cheaply. Anyone wanting a decent short scale could do a lot worse than one of these. Narrow spaced Precision pickup options? For 5 string

The Aguilar AG5P-60 is gorgeously organic, fitted to my Sterling 5. However it has equal sized pickup coil covers so isn't a direct fit. -
We are having a conversation...

Maybe he can find me a Yamaha BB5000 - just emailed him! Thanks for the link.
If it carries on the way it's gone so far, it will be done in half my normal build time! And I'm not entirely sure why!
Must be the swift logo, Andy. Looks sumptuous, like a slab of rich fruit cake.

For me it changes from time to time. With my small band it is 'It Never Rains But It Pours' which is a jazzy/bluesy sort of thing by Zoot Money that is reminiscent of Moondance but makes more sense. It just has the most marvellous groove to it that makes me smile. But that kind of alternates in my affections with the frantic funk of 'Favourite Shirts' by Haircut 100. For the Bon Jovi tribute it has to be 'Dry County' - a cracking good, powerful tune that is in a different league to a lot of their more disposable pop/rock. I enjoy the other stuff, but not as much as this.

I had the camera out for some other stuff for sale so took some shots of my beautiful Yamaha SB-35. Bucket loads of mojo! And, boy, does it sing!! Pictures. They show that it is in very good condition. a few very light surface swirls that would polish out. One tiny dink at the bottom and also a tiny loss of paint around the neck pocket. Quality bass! Hipshot Ultralite tuners, Hipshot bridge. Also adding another hole in the headstock for the extra tuner? It is not like you are ruining a pristine instrument, though. Anyway, some pictures. Some general shots, plus some close up (some out of focus!) of bad bits. The paint around the metal plate of the pre-amp has lifted in a few places. Someone (ok, me) splodged a permanent marker over it. Ditto a mark on the lower horn. Ditto a mark near the bridge - not sure what happened here as it is raised. Quite possibly the bridge had been glued back on at some point and this is a blob left on it? Overall there are surface scratches and swirls over quite a lot of the finish. If I could have been bothered most of these would have polished out. A few chips to the edges of the headstock that were mercifully saved from the marker pen. So those are the bad bits - all cosmetic. None has any affect whatsoever on the playability. The binding is actually intact and in good condition - that would have been tricky to fix but no need. Good bits - well, it is a Godin. They are legendary. It feels and sounds magnificent. 3 band eq allows adjustment to pretty much anything you would want. Price is firm as it is a bargain. It is a double cutaway. I don't know what vibrating tines are so don't know if it has any. It looks like this one http://fr.audiofanzine.com/basse-electro-acoustique/godin/acoustibass-lr-baggs/medias/photos/a.play,m.777253.html if that helps. -
If this is genuine (looks it to me) it is an absolute steal. http://www.ebay.co.u...3QAAOSw4CFYuZMH

Yup. Plus the middle position gives a burp similar to, but not exactly like, the Fender P/Js I have had. I reckon those BB424/425s are unbelievable for the money. I've read on here many times that Yamaha make the best precision basses and I am beginning to wonder if there might be something in that... I really am GASing for a 80s BB5000 as I reckon that will be sublime.

Precision all the way for me, too - that is the tone that defines bass guitar as far as I am concerned. I have three 4 string basses that I will be keeping - 2 are JV Squier Precisons. I found myself with a problem when I moved to 5 string basses and found that Fender/Squier 5 string Precisions were either a/ too heavy and/or b/ string spacing too wide. Solved by putting a Precision pickup into a MM Sterling 5 that was lighter with tighter spacing. Then I tried a Yamaha BB425 and find I am liking the P pup in that very much.
