1.
I still want to know more about Rocakabilly, mind.
Similar to Rococobilly but less fancy.
2. I started off with a Compact. Fabulous cab but perhaps slightly lacking top end. A while later I added a Midget. On its own it was a feisty little thing but lacked bottom end. Together they were a match made in Heaven. Or, more accurately, Brighton. Then I replaced the Compact/Midget combination with a Supercompact and that does the same job - has the lows of the Compact but the tightness of the Midget, all in the one cab. A very focused sort of tone. I liked it so much I got another one. Just, well, because.
3. Makes me wish I were still playing 4 strings. Seems a good price. 4.
I have two Trace Elliot AH-300-SMX heads - one spare in the event that #1 has to go into hospital. I have a Quilter Bass Block that I intend to use for rehearsals and to gigs as a back up. It is the best small amp I have tried. I have an ancient dusty old Peavey TKO-80 in my 'office' that I use for home practice and that my cats use as a scratching post. Not turned up very loud. Two Barefaced Supercompacts One Barefaced 110 for quieter rehearsals and possibly smaller gigs. What I don't have any more is GAS for anything else, remarkably.
Proves one should never believe what one reads on the internet, especially if I wrote it. Had a sharp bout of GAS and bought an Orange TB500 and I'm liking it lots. Took me long enough to join the party. Knock on effect is my dusty Peavey TKO has gone to a better place and Trace Elliot head #2 relegated to home practice with second Supercompact - available at short notice should the gig require it. Getting that Peavey downstairs wasn't easy, but the guy who collected it (hi Alex) took it from Benfleet to Stevenage via public transport!
5. Best build yet, Andy - truly magnificent.
6. Yamaha BB425. Strong B string, great range of tones from the PJ pups, unbelievably good value. Close string spacing and not that heavy.
7. I have a couple of 300W TE heads - I've found them to be plenty loud enough for most situations into 8ohms - louder than, say, TC Electronic RH750 or GenzBenz Streamliner 600, which were the class Ds I had at the time.
8. PMs answered. Just to repeat - the one and only trade I am considering would be for a Yamaha BB5000.
9.
the high action allows for banjo style bluegrass fingering.
Must remember that line if I ever sell a bass with an unadjustable bridge. Has Philips Cleartone Conversions moved across the pond?
10. TC Electronic - whichever model you fancy. The 'Spectrocomp' is very good.
11. I like the black tuners with gold details - it mirrors the bridge a bit more.
12. Barefaced Supercompact gets my vote - compared to the Midget and 110 it has a more rounded quality to it.
13. I have the Yamaha BB425 and it is very good indeed. Rock solid, passive P/J with a strong B string. Then you consider how much it costs and it is unbelievable.
14. Do try before you buy if possible. I was in the market for a light and loud combo. I didn't get on with a Fender Rumble, preferred Mark Bass. Both were light but not quite light enough. Both were loud but not quite loud enough. And I didn't really like the tone from either. I ended up with separates - Barefaced 110 and Quilter bass block.
15. Worth having a look at Neotech Mega strap. I got one quite recently and it is doing a good job of spreading the weight of one of my heavier basses and really comfy. 16. I don't think Yamaha BB5000 are very easy to come by, so it isn't a question of saving up and buying one. If one came up I'd buy it and not worry about the cash. But I get the feeling that folks that own them don't want to part with them, much like how I feel about this JV P. So maybe there is a deal to be done between owners of rare and desirable instruments. We'll see. In my defence, I have a second JV P, not a Fender logo but a corker. It was my main bass before I migrated to 5 strings and, of the two, is the one I bonded with more. Probably because it is black, which I love, and because the maple neck has some beautiful almost holographic figuring in it. Plays and sounds just exactly like the F logo one. And, of course, I may feel differently tomorrow and withdraw this! After getting a couple of PMs it is probably worth adding that I am not interested in any other trades, just a BB5000. Also I didn't mention it but it comes with a decent Hiscox case. I didn't take a picture of it but, frankly, if you don't know what one looks like you shouldn't be reading this anyway
17.
...not being able to name a single 5 string P bass with 22 frets and 17.5mm spacing)
Or lightweight. That is exactly why I had the change made to my Sterling. Best of both worlds, I'd say.
18.
Reminds me a lot of my very first bass, an old Squier Bronco...to the point that it makes me wonder what the difference is between the two? Has there been some cheeky re-badging going on, or has my memory of the Bronco faded with time?
Bronco and Vista Series Musicmasters are chalk and cheese. Vista Series were a limited run of quality retro styled instruments made in China. Up there with some of the better (but not best) Japanese Squiers. If you google 'Squier Vista Series' you will see a lot of love for them - I had one, it was fab. Better than the Fender Musicmaster I also owned.
19. I don't want to sell this and will turn down any offers of cash. But. I would trade it for a Yamaha BB5000, such is the strength of my GAS. If anyone isn't tempted by money but might be tempted by something delicious, then I offer up this delightful morsel. Depending upon condition we can talk cash adjustment either way. An extremely early JV Squier '57 re-issue Precision with Fender logo. Serial no. JV02XXX. It is not perfect, but in extremely good condition - couple of dings and scratches but beautifully shiny in tobacco burst. My oh my the colour of the neck has to be seen - warm caramel. There is a non-faded white patch on the, now cream, scratch plate where a sticker once was. The pups are not original to the bass but are vintage correct JV raised pole jobbies. All wiring is cloth covered and rest of the electrics are original. Sounds exactly how you would expect one of these to sound, weighs around 8.5lbs and the neck is a delight - 42mm at the nut and shallow - with very little fret wear. Currently strung with DR High Beams which give it a huge amount of bite. A few pics - I can take more if required. These early Fender logo JVs are quite hard to come by, sought after and collectible and this is a cracker.
20. My small band started playing Sultans of Swing recently despite protestations by guitarist that it has been done to death over the years. It never fails to get a huge cheer. Here's my favourite off the first album, played with a great groove live a long while ago... http://youtu.be/XEl7devfqdc
21. can you play funk on a Mustang? Damned right... this is what they sound like. http://youtu.be/bSq93Hsn0Bg
