1. I have just had Andy fit a reverse P pickup into my MM Sterling 5er - build diary here: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/294193-paul-ss-sterling-5/ . I am collecting it on Wednesday and am pretty excited by the prospect I must say. Gigs Friday and Saturday to give it the full road test!
2. I can hardly wait! Yet another lovely job, sir.
3. Fingers crossed the WiFi holds up... Neck vol, tone, Bridge vol, tone please! Really chuffed with how it looks, too, as I feared the p pup might look a bit clumsy - it doesn't at all.
4. Through the marvels of modern technology I have just looked at this from my room in Mexico. Cracking job Andy. The wiring configuration you have settled on sounds more intuitive than the middle blend thing. Looking forward to my next WiFi opportunity!
5. I can almost hear it! Lovely.
6. I use a Trace Elliot AH 300-12 SMX rack mounted into an ABS flight case. It weighs in at 12kg and is a perfectly balanced carry with a Barefaced Supercompact in the other hand. Sounds the mutts, too.
7. I love these diaries, Andy. All the better when it is my project!! Shame I am going away tomorrow as I will miss the development, although I can catch up when I return. Really looking forward to this!
8. My main gigging bass at the moment is a Musicman Sterling 5er, because in one band I need a 5er a lot and the other just a little and so, to keep changing basses, I use just this one. I take a Hohner BV as backup. Which means that I don't get to use my best and favourite bass - a Squier JV Precision - as much as I would like since adopting the 5er.
9. Traded some gear with Marc. What can I say - top guy to deal with. Great comms, really friendly, accommodating even when it went slightly off track Perfect Basschatter. An absolute pleasure doing business with you, Sir.
10. Yes! Just ordered a double pack of Legacy 5 string sets for £23.99 delivered!
11. Eddie bought my Ashdown MiBass amp in the simplest of transactions. Great comms throughout, an absolute pleasure doing business!
12.
I sold my favourite bass in a moment of madness. I was going through a divorce and not thinking straight I guess. It eventually found its way to Paul S, and he reunited it with me about a month ago as he mentions in his post above. It even acquired a nice case in its travels! So what is it? A Jolana D Bass, which is a mid 1980s Rick 4001 shaped four string with P/J pickups.
Actually it was another I was referring to, not the Jolana. A medium scale Squier Precision in a beautifully aged creamy white that sounded magnificent and played even better. Now residing with the chap who also wished he hadn't sold it. I had a happy couple of weeks re-united basses with past owners.
13. Proves how fickle I am - I recently parted company with the 'bass I would never sell' - it having been usurped by another I re-united it with a former owner. The new 'bass I would never sell', right up until I sell it, is a JV Squier Precision in black with a caramel aged maple neck that has a holographic flame in the neck and now sports a black pick guard, Gotoh Resolite tuners and Schaller bridge. Weighs in at 8lbs.
14. Or maybe try to adopt a different mindset. It used to bother me a bit if people didn't leave feedback but, having taken a step back for perspective, came to realise that it actually isn't very important. Then, of course, send them some dog poo through the post later.
15. I guess we all have different life balances. I have other fish to fry - I'd rather spend that time learning something botanical or researching plant habitats. Or spending 30 minutes a day on Basschat explaining why I don't have time to do it
16. Bit of a yawn here, I am afraid. In a perfect world it would be nice to learn music theory as it would make make my bass playing easier plus I would have greater understanding of what I actually do and why I do it. Unfortunately I don't have time as I have other, equally demanding aspects of my life away from music. But I get by perfectly well - I play in two bands where I would say the level of musicianship is pretty high and my lack of theory doesn't hold me back, nor does it matter to my band mates. In one band the guitarist sight reads and is one of the most gifted amateur guitarists I have heard, the keyboard player is a music teacher. Yes, it slows me down during the learning process but, importantly, once I am there I believe I can play what I need to play as well as anyone. If I couldn't I wouldn't be able maintain my spot as bassist in those bands as they would find someone better. So for me, the type of music I play and the situations in which I find myself musically, it doesn't really matter and the extra effort involved in learning music theory doesn't seem necessary. I suspect a lot of us are in a similar position.
17.
Are the cheep IEM systems reliable? Has anyone gigged with the moulded plugs?
For most of this year's gigs for one band- and we usually play very small pubs - I've been using the entry level T-Bone IEM system from Thomann , coupled with Shure SE215 buds. It isn't Hi-Fi but it works well enough for me to not consider upgrading. Drummer and singer use my transmitter and have receiver packs, guitarist liked it so much he bought his own Sennheiser unit but is always fiddling with it and seems to have problems!
18. Nothing to big up this being a Vista Series in the description so maybe this might slip under the radar and go cheaply? Who knows.
