1. Well, it has arrived a day early. Filthy dirty and strings are knackered but, my oh my, does it sing Lighter than I hoped, no neck dive, really low action with no buzzes. A bit of fret wear but nothing excessive, given that it is 43 years old. Oozes quality. I'll post some pics once I've cleaned it up.
2. Very belated entry here - apologies. Sometimes things don't go according to plan and I think these are the more telling transactions than those that run smoothly. I bought a neck from Lee that arrived with mucho bow and a nasty twist. He didn't even wait for the pics before refunding me. I wouldn't hesitate to deal with him again.
3. Bought Paddy's Harley Benton HB 500 amp. Unfortunately it arrived not working but I posted it back, Paddy refunded the purchase/postage with no problems at all. Good comms throughout, I wouldn't hesitate to deal with him again.
4. Ta. [/smug] Jon, the seller bought it new so it must be another. He (Gary Hurlstone - anyone heard of him?) said this: It's played everything from prog rock to Punk Zydeco, reggae, Cajun, blues, folk and jazz and has shared stages with Thin Lizzy, Eric Burdon, spent a few evenings in the Cavern Club and a host of other venues as well as just about every university in the north of England before I stopped being a bass player and concentrated on the acoustic guitar. I've asked him if he could flesh out the history a bit. I suspect that won't be a problem Roll on Wednesday!
5. Two nations divided by a common language. Don't know who said it but it is true. Three hundreds years of evolution into very different cultures.
6. One of those moments when you've never clapped eyes on something before then, as soon as you see it, you know you must have it. I saw this on eBay and it ticks an awful lot of my boxes. I put in a lowish bid - less than I think it is worth - and won! Symmetrical double cutaway, medium scale, 40mm at the nut, not heavy (8.5lbs), single pickup, passive, early(1973) MIJ. Should be with me by the middle/end of this coming week. Hope I like it! Anyone ever had one/seen one/played one? What little there is on the interweb about these indicates they are fairly rare.
7. Terrific gig at a little village pub The Nags Head, Moreton. Recently changed hands and now serves 'real' Mexican food, not just TexMex - absolutely delightful.
8. I had a lovely Silver Series Squier P that I sold and still miss. The trail has gone cold now - sunk without a trace.
9. Thanks Jon. I probably would if it were nearer but it is collection only in Halifax - around 4hrs away. I am sure there would be ways around that if it were my heart's desire but I will pass, I think. Also I've spent too much on basses recently and have my eyes on yet another! Could really do with shifting that medium scale Fender jazz Bass Special to assuage my conscience...
10. No time for the band as she is busy trying to get pregnant?
11. Is this JapCrap? I like the shape. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UNUSUAL-SMALL-SHORT-SCALE-BASS-GUITAR-UNKNOWN-MAKE-/401076897056?hash=item5d620bc520:g:OxUAAOSwWTRWzLui
12.
I say we leave it as it is. If people can't be bothered to filter through a few ads then that's their problem.
This, really. I can see it getting very complicated otherwise. For the sake of discussion, say you advertise your bass for £550, then drop it to £450, it would have to moved to a different forum if the cutoff point was £500. Figures are arbitrary.
13.
now I'm filled with lumps of guilt for recommending it to you.
To be fair, you didn't just recommend it to me, you just said how pleased you were with it - entirely different things. Bastard. There is space in my life for this, I think. Just not that band.
14. Hmm. Used mine last night rehearsing with my loud rock band. In that room with that band, with or without a BF Supercompact in the mix, I couldn't get a sound I liked out of it. Got my Trace Elliot out of the car, sorted. Need to try it elsewhere with other bands but my rose tinted specs are off now.
15. For fear of being stoned by serious musos, how about early Status Quo? Albums like 'Ma Kelly's Greasy Spoon', 'Dog of Two Head' and 'Piledriver' have got some great blues rock originals and covers in them. But there are always so many. Blind Faith, Doors, CCR, Cactus and all the subsequent derivatives. Edit - ZZ Top?
16. Sounds good to me Keith. Not getting to sleep until 2am washes me out for ages these days.
17. 1957 for me and I have two '57 re-issue Precisions. Definitely as near as I will get!
18. Thanks Jon. Actually, I could make that £70. Just had a look at the bridge and why there is a screw missing and two of the screws have sheared off. Either a/ the buried bits would need drilling out b/ make do with the other 4 screws c/ fit a new bridge that required new holes drilling.
19. Some pics - still has the new pickup and straplocks, I will take these off: There, I said it was scruffy! Works just fine though.
20. I had one - Bryan now has it (still scruffy?) - and they are very good. I kind of wish I were in the market for a jazz bass as these are probably as good a Jazz bass as you can get without paying double this asking price.
21. Westone Thunder Jet, MIJ '84. Passive, P type split pup. Very scruffy body with evidence of a bad paint patch around the control knob area. Wood is sound, just looks scruffy. As Thunder jets go this is quite heavy at just over 9lbs. 22 frets, lovely neck, truss rod is fine. Bridge missing one screw. Non-original knobs for vol and tone. I tried it with a better pick-up to use a a beaten up back up but it is a touch too heavy. I will be returned back to how I got it except clean. Ripe for modding. Did I mention this is scruffy? Pics this afternoon. Looking for [s]£80[/s] [s]£70[/s] £60 collected from SS71LD or [s]£93[/s] [s]£83[/s] £73 posted.
22. I had one - sold it to Dunc, I believe. Perfect 'get out of jail free' to stick in your gig bag. I miss it so PM incoming.
23. Many Happy Returns for yesterday, Warren. How's the head? And how many more paydays? Not many. For me the choice would be simple - YOB (in my case a '57) Precision.
