1.
Paul, I think that the time has come to sell me back that 32" PBass I really 'bonded' with that one! (but sold it...)
Ted, how can I put this politely? (emoticon police won't allow more) Edit - with the caveat that if you ever come across a Katana and can live with the shape it sounds and plays almost exactly the same - they are basically A series medium scale MIJ Squier Precisions with a bonkers shape. In fact I find it extremely comfy as the missing bits of body are exactly where I have extra bits Nevertheless -
2. I've fitted a couple of these to various Jazz basses I've had and, as far as I am concerned, they are absolutely brilliant. They open up the tone so well, add a depth and character to anything you dial in. Passive is fine, too, although with the active side on I found I didn't ever use it passive. I fitted them myself each time and, speaking as a technically inept and very impatient type of chap, found it fiddly. There isn't a whole lot of spare room under that control plate and you have to be extremely careful about positioning the battery to it doesn't put pressure on any of the wires - I actually broke a solder joint in a ham-fisted attempt at forcing the whole battery/wire bundle in. I also seem to have grounding issues whenever I fit a J East preamp - be it P Retro, J Retro or U Retro (currently the only one I have) and it always seemed to take a while to track don the source of the hum. Usually grounding the pots.
3. Those boots are something! Have to say, HJ, it worries me slightly that you seem to have this immediate and apparently limitless access to weird photos...
4. Danelectro DC bass in gold sparkle. Or silver sparkle. Certainly metallic sparkle - it changes colour according to the light. OK, a black paint finish in which are embedded metallic flakes which are of a non-specified precious metal colour. However you describe the colour, 'outrageously camp' pretty much fits the bill overall. Something that resembles masking tape binds the edge. 34" longscale 20 fret neck that is (surprisingly) 41mm at the nut. 7lbs on my luggage scales - these are made from a solid wood core then covered in something called Masonite, which is essentially hardboard. 2 lipstick pickups, each with stacked volume/tone knobs. Front pickup gives a thumpy resonant old school sound, especially with the tone rolled off 90%. Blend in a bit of the bridge pickup and things start to get interesting - both on full you get a passable Jazz bass tone, roll it back and you get what I suppose you'd call the Danelectro tone, although with a different quality to a Longhorn. Cutest little tuning pegs with vintage styling - possibly not the most accurate on the market but they work. Bridge is rather elementary, with little scope for adjustment, but it is by no means unusable. If you want retro looks, retro vibe and retro tones, this has all those and more. I have no idea when this was made although I believe it to be a slightly earlier Korean reissue model rather than a recent Chinese one. It is in good nick - couple of very small dinks in the pickguard, couple of small dinks in the headstock - paint finish is good. Selling as there is room in my life for just one Danelectro and the Longorn won a place in my heart. Asking a reasonable £250 for this collected from SS7, meet half-way or deliver for fuel costs within reasonable radius. No case but loads of packaging - fully insured next day courier to mainland UK would be £22. 5. Nothing to do with cut fingers and superglue. I am currently going through a bit of a shuffle with my gear and reflecting upon the nature of GAS etc. GAS is GAS, nothing can be done about it. But after the thrill of chase? A common denominator for me is I have to bond with a bass if I want to keep it. I have managed to slowly (some might say not so slowly) accrue many basses (some might say too many) some of which seemed, ostensibly, to tick all my boxes when I bought them. Yet, when push comes to shove, they stay on the rack or in the bag. Case in point - a while back and totally out of nowhere I found myself with an exceptionally strong outbreak of GAS for a Danelectro Longhorn bass. I lost one on eBay and felt cheated - then one popped up on here just a day or so later. Fair to say that from the first time I picked it up and plugged it in I was totally smitten. [/smileyfest] So when, a couple of weeks later, a Dano DC bass registered on my radar I jumped at it. Used it at a couple of rehearsals and it does everything I need from a bass. Yet it doesn't 'do it' for me, lovely as it is, and I have just finished taking pics of it to list it for sale. Two other recent basses - Yamaha BB414 - absolutely lovely bass that, on paper, is perfect yet, for me, not a keeper. Squier Katana - only arrived a couple of days ago but I can't put it down - it is SO comfortable, plays so well and sounds so good. Is this silly? Am I just a romantic old fool and should I just play any old bass? Does anyone else have to bond with their instrument?
6. I only had the Eden for the merest blink of an eye. Since I bought the Compact, which I looked up and was 2011, I routinely used it with a TC Electronic Classic 450 and also a Genz Benz Streamliner 600. Either paired with a Midget for gigs on on its own for rehearsals. Never been short of volume.
7. Thank you kind sir - a gentle bump to remind everyone it is here And a small reduction - £380 posted, £350 collected. Don't forget, folks, this includes a Roqsolid cover and handle upgrade.
8.
Hi, I'm in a rock band and we play within a musical soundscape.
Not sure what one of these is. Anything like a pub?
9. I am surprised it is still here but hoping it remain here until I have sold my Barefaced Compact....
10. I was expecting something more like this: And a microfibre cloth, of course.
11. I somehow managed to sell Dunc a whole pile of stuff. He is an absolute gent to deal with - we've had a right old natter, too. I look forward to dealing with him again! That is all
12. Hmm. just started to think about practicalities such as carting it about and none of the gig bags and cases I have go anywhere near it. Does anyone know of any strangely offset shaped gig bags? Warwick do a Thunderbird one but I don't think even that will fit! Edit - this will do it. 13. A few hours to go and this looks like a bargain. Joodee Performer bass. Google throws up stuff that says these are nice - if i weren't up to my ankles in basses I'd have a go at this myself. 14. Very Rock. And, yes, I agree, it would go very well with leopardskin. I believe I have a leopardskin strap somewhere that I may use with it. Or Zebra skin. I, sadly, don't go with leopardskin. Especially not leopardskin Spandex. Or any kind of Spandex, come to that. My Spandex days are well behind me. If, indeed, I ever had any. On stage, off stage, even in the privacy of my own home. Just no. There is that little club I go to sometimes on alternate Tuesdays, but that doesn't count
15. Had minor GAS for one of these for a while which was made worse by a recent post about them. My good fortune, then, to catch one within a very short time of it being listed on eBay yesterday and - less than 24hrs later - it is now here at casa S. It certainly doesn't disappoint in the flesh - apart from a few dinks in the pointy bit it is in pretty good condition especially when considered it is best part of 30 years old. This is an A series Japanese Squier made '85-86 - basically a Precision with a bonkers shape body and headstock. Here's the best stuff - 32" medium scale length, neck is 38mm width nut and weighing a ridiculous 7lbs on the luggage scale. Nicely made, sounds great, plays even better. Bit of neck dive, nothing I can't live with. Perfectly posey for my new rock covers band. Happy chap.
16. Polarises opinions, that for sure.
17.
Poof reading is absolutely essential to avoid embarrassment.
18. Luvverly. I had the 'Power Jazz Bass Special' version in the same fetching colour scheme that, for some daft reason, I sold.
19.
You think Plant can still sing that high?!
As I recall Plant ducked out of most of the high notes in the film 'The Song Remained The Same' in 1973, so no chance these days. He now lacks power as well as range. IMO etc etc. To be fair, there aren't many from that era who can still sing. Ian Gillan, probably my favourite male vocalist back in the day, is pitiful. Paul Rogers springs to mind as one of the few who can.
20. I recently acquired this - a Yamaha BB414 in a kind of discreetly flecked metallic black. Lovely condition - then again I have no idea how old it is! Lots of love for these on the forum and rightly so. For the price point these are astonishingly good basses with an aggressive P bass tone from the middle pickup - mix it with the bridge via the toggle switch and you have a very nice sound indeed with a character way beyond a bass this cheap should have. This one is set up nicely with a decently low action, neck is 40mm the nut and plays well. Weight is around 9.5lbs - and that is my problem as it is a tad too heavy for me. I considered changing the tuners for lightweight ones but decided in the end to move it on. Plus, having already decided I have too many basses, I have just given in to GAS and bought a Squier Katana bass that just popped up on eBay. Something had to give and this one got the straw. I am asking a very reasonable £140 collected from SS7, meet half way or deliver for fuel costs within a reasonable radius. No case or bag but lots of packaging for courier - Interparcel would be around £17 on top. Bank transfer, PayPal no fees or cash.
21.
And there's your problem. It's all in the ears, and we all have different ears.
+1000 I really like TC Electronic amps, some people can't stand them. Once the band kicks in most of the subtle nuances of different amp tones can be drowned out anyway so that it why it is important to get what sounds good to you as you and your amp will spend a lot of time alone together on cosy nights in.
22. +1 for Shure SE 215s - they are incredibly good for the money. They sometimes come up with damaged packaging on eBay - I got a set that were brand new with all the bits and warranty but no box for under £60.
