I play with a pick. For the past 18 months or so I have been trying to get my fingerstyle playing to the same standard but I am struggling. Just don't get the same control or speed using my fingers. I am ok for some bass lines but nowhere near as good as I want to be. Better than I was, so guess keep plugging on! Double thumbing? I can't even play single thumbing.

I currently have a TC Electronic RH750 and a Markbass Little Mark Tube 800. I like both, for different reasons. As others have said I think the tube preamp of the MB amp gives a warmth about it that the TC lacks and so, purely in terms of the tone, is the winner. In a 'plug in, don't fiddle about and just play' situation I have on one band this is the better head for me. If you need to change many settings during a gig I think the RH750 wins as far as usability on the fly goes . The foot-switchable mute and integral tuner I think are a huge bonus and if you need different eq/overdriven sounds for different tunes the presets are really handy. Or to make changes on the fly just dial in a little extra or less of whatever you think might be too much or lacking then click back onto your default preset - very easy to use. I wouldn't call it clinical by any means - nothing like as clear as a Genz Benz I had for a while. And at the end of it all I find once drummer and other instruments kick off the nuances in tone are pretty much swamped out anyway.

Sold Jeff my Westone Thunder 1A is a totally smooth and easy transaction. A pleasure doing business!

Trouble is 'tone' is so subjective - we all have a different sound in our heads as the 'perfect' precision tone. For me the best I have tried is the Fender '62 Reissue, sometimes called the Fender Original. With a very old set of Dr Highbeams. Wizard Trad, when they were around, also gave a very good vintage tone - not sure what the new setup equivalent is.
I have no idea who or what either of the choices are. Can I have a pint instead?
Me neither. But make mine a Coke Zero. Can I link directly to the Basschat's Old man's thread?

Just looked at my last post #511 just 8 weeks ago and two of the three items I now have - a black Squier Katana and an amp with a valve preamp (albeit a Little Mark Tube 800). Just need the medium scale Jazz in black or white and, er... well... maybe not an end but, you know...

Anti-GAS, or being happy with what you've got.
+1 to that Paul. The experience you gain from all these basses passing through is invaluable. ....and Mrs.Paul S is just as lovely as Paul says. Fell on your feet there buddy, but I've not done so bad myself. I was chatting with Mrs.H last night about a pre-owned bass that I am interested in. She said "Why don't you just get a new one?". I explained that they are very expensive (think £5k to £10k bracket). She didn't bat an eyelid and said "Well, it is what you enjoy". Love that woman. Not going buy a new one, but it's the thought that counts.
That's very nice of you to say so - I have to agree. We are lucky chaps, for sure - what do these goddesses see in us? Mind you, my new basses are generally around the £100-200 bracket... -
For me it raises many worrying issues as well as a grin. I'm guessing that the guy can't fart in tune on a regular basis and that this is a random 'lucky' fart that is vaguely musical. But how do you come to the point when that random 'lucky' fart gets recorded? Does the guy routinely record his farts and listen to them? Select the best then upload it onto YouTube. Without giving away too much personal information, if i recorded all my farts there'd be quite a bit of material to sift through. It implies a level of dedication I am not prepared to give. I think we should be told.

In my latest band there seems to be a 'louder is better' ethos going on in rehearsals. Not sure why but I wear ear plugs and don't mind The drummer is the loudest I have played with and guitarist, who I have played with before, is just loud. I have recently changed my rig to a single cab - Barefaced Super Compact. So a 1x12 8ohm cab. Amp used for this band is a TC Electronic RH750. Last week was my first outing with this set up and I was told to turn it up from my default amp setting of around 10 o'clock on the master, so put the volume up at 12 o'clock. I think this is the loudest I have played during a rehearsal and probably louder than I have played at most gigs! I'm not sure what it going to happen when we play at the Dog and Duck but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. Anyway my point is not endorsing the particular cab or amp, just to say that I found in my loud rock covers band that an 8ohm 1x12 cab is entirely sufficient if the amp is powerful enough and the cab can take it.

I think these are not crap? Vantage VS600B. Not for me at the moment but should put a smile on someone's face http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vantage-Bass-Guitar-VS600B-with-Brandon-custom-case-/321757639321?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4aea3ff299 -
Nice. Not common, either. I am after one of these, but in black or white. What is the weight of it, please? I am guessing around 8-8.5lbs or so?

Anti-GAS, or being happy with what you've got.
Paul S replied to mcnach's topic in General Discussion
My mindset with regard to GAS has evolved. I no longer regard it as a bad thing and now decided that if I want something I'll get it. I have 5 basses I am really happy with and unlikely to sell any time soon. One in particular (mid 80s MIJ 32" scale Squier Precision) is best and favourite that I will keep until I stop playing. On top of those I have basses for specific purposes - an EUB, a fretless, a semi-acoustic, a U-Bass. I have several more that were bought for various reasons - some are currently for sale, some will be soon. I seem to have this insatiable curiosity and constantly find myself wanting to try more stuff. I bought two more last week - one arrived a couple of days back, one is incoming! For me it isn't about having basses to gig with - I have those already - it is about trying, playing and enjoying different basses. I keep them a while, then move them on - a kind of revolving door approach. Once in a while I get a real surprise like when I gave in to GAS for a Danelectro Longorn and discovered I love it (one of the five). Bottom line is I can afford it, I enjoy it, have (just about) got room and I have a wonderful and indulgent wife who says, when I start taking pictures to sell a bass, 'why don't you just keep it?' So when it comes to the point when I physically can't fit another one in I have a cull then start over. -
Replacing Berg CN212 with 2x BF Super Compacts... Thoughts?
So, yes, I don't buy into the whole thing, I'm afraid. Others might not agree, ..oh well..!!
So here is a novel idea - why don't you just leave it there instead of trolling the same old venom every single time a Barefaced cab is mentioned? It would make life so much less tedious for everyone. I mean, we all get it now - you don't like them. So, in summary. You don't like them? Fine. A lot of people do. That's fine. -
