1. Next casualty in my gradual move away from active basses is my 1986 MIJ Westone Thunder 1A version 3, one of Matsumoku's workhorses. I make the point about version 3 as it has some features that are different to other, earlier incarnations of the Thunder 1A. So, glossy piano black - matching headstock and neck. Been scuffed here and there but, all things considered, in pretty good nick. As Thunder basses go, this is lightweight - around 8.5lbs. It has a long scale, 22 fret neck which is 40mm at the nut and has a dark rosewood fretboard - frets are fine. Active preamp on board that uses 2 x 9v batteries - from a centre indent you get bass boost one way, treble boost the other. Other knobs (which are amazingly all originals) are volume and a passive tone that works active or passive, which I like. Magnabass pickup, not split coil, switchable for single coil/humbucker coil tap operated via pull switch on volume pot, active/passive toggle. Chromed 'high mass' Schaller-a-like bridge. Lighter body means you get a slight neck dive, nothing serious. Full rich, woody tone. Slightly more nasal than the split pickup but nothing outrageously modern. Dial in a little extra bass boost from the centre indent position and it really sounds massive. For the price point I really don't think there are many basses that touch these, really well put together, great necks. This is my 3rd Thunder 1A but it has just been usurped by a medium scale passive Concord. I am asking a silly £120 collected from SS7, add £17 for insured overnight courier to mainland UK addresses. No case or bag but it will be well packaged. Can deliver reasonable distance/meet half way for fuel. 2. Bought a Westone Concord from Benedict in a smooth, quick and totally obstruction-free transaction. Nice chap to deal with, bass arrived packed to withstand a holocaust. Really pleased with the bass. Look forward to doing business with you again, Sir.
3. The scruffy one? Want to sell it back to me?
4. Still here! Virtually as new, handle upgrade and cover!
5. Sold more stuff to Dunc. Got estate agents coming this afternoon so he can have my house, too. What can I say? Top bloke doesn't cover it. If you are contemplating dealings with Dunc carry on without hesitation or reservation. It has been, and no doubt will be again, a pleasure!
6. I like the idea of a single pickup but, as has been said, where it is makes all the difference. Too near the bridge and, for me, it gets too 'honky'. Too near the neck, like an Epiphone EB0 I had, and it gets muddy. I think the P is perfect spot for the sound I like. Yet, having said all that, I like the sound of the P/J or (some) other twin pickup set up when the middle position is selected, which must be aimed pretty much where I find a single to be honky. I wonder why that is?
7.
but I'm really pleased so far how this is coming out
Not as pleased as I am, I'll wager. That stain looks lovely and warm - just the ticket.
8. You made that all sound very easy, Andy! Fascinating stuff!
You name it, I've probably already caught it.
Probably best not to dwell on it, frankly...
9. I recently bought a job lot of those Industrial ones although I am increasingly moving away from active basses. Again More recently still I popped into Maplins (does anyone else 'pop' these days?) and they had an offer on their own brand version AAs - which allegedly outperformed Duracell in a recent test of some sort. They are nice blue colour and came in a sturdy box, so that was good start.
10.
Very interesting... I await more posts with bated underpants.
Glad you didn't say 'baited underpants' - you never know what you might catch.
11. Another 'cupboard under the stairs storage solution' here. With room for 2 pairs of shoes on a shelf near the top, so not entirely wasted. I have a wheeled dolly thingumie that means I don't put my back out when reaching into the far reaches, which is handy.
12. Leave as is please, Andy. Looking forward to the pics!
13. Deflate your tyres. If you still can't get under, go by a different route.
14. One thing to consider, Dave, is you have an asymmetric bottom. Or, rather, your Jazz bass does. So I guess you need one that dangles from the neck, rather than being supported from the bottom. It is possible to jiggle about a Jazz so it works on one of the bottom supported basses, but it isn't very stable.
15. Also worth considering the Ultimate Bass Stand. Nice and sturdy. I've had mine for years.
16. Replace it with a Wilkinson black and gold bridge? Has to be more cost effective.
17. Just seen your extra question - the serial number is on the neck plate, there's nothing sinister going on. A030196, which throws up this answer in the Guitar Dater project: Your guitar was made at the Fuji-gen Plant (for Fender Japan), Japan in the Year(s): 1985 - 1986 I welcome any trial on this - if anyone wants to try before they buy that is extremely possible. I'd love to trade this for a Fender JB 62M medium scale jazz bass in black or white with cash your way, in case anyone has one.
18. I thought that. A quick Google seems to indicate that all the basses have.
19. You don't see them very often - they didn't make many. So far as I can make out from reading around, Fender didn't actually make a Katana bass. They made a Katana guitar then brought out the budget Squier version of it together with a Squier bass version in what was then the fairly new Japanese side of things in an attempt to compete with the odd pointy machines that were being produced in the East. But they were something of a flop and production stopped after just one year. This really has me hooked, though. The body is missing in some areas where I have extra bits (ok, my belly) and we just seem to fit together nicely. Build quality, tone and playability is exactly what you'd expect from a mid 80s A series Japanese Squier Precision. And it is SO light.

Decals

No preview, but I used this place when I needed a new decal for my Precision Lyte. I changed it from coloured to natural and had a copy of the original done, complete with serial no. I was pleased with the job. http://www.guitardecals.co.uk/
21. Bought a Mark Bass amp from Karl - a five-star, fur-lined, top-drawer transaction. A really nice, friendly fellow, great comms all though (and we put the world to rights a bit, too) - dispatched immediately, arrived beautifully packaged in a perfectly decent lap top bag! I look forward to an opportunity to deal with Karl again as it has been an absolute pleasure.
22. And a bump. Long shot - would willingly trade this for a medium scale Fender Jazz JB-62M in black or white with cash your way.
