I was in a very short-lived 80s band and found myself having to play 'Sit Down' by James and 'Walking on Sunshine' by whoever the hell it was sang it. Both are 'switch off or change channels' tracks for me if they came on the radio, ordinarily. Luckily we only lasted 2 gigs.

My choice would be 'Made in Japan' by Deep Purple. As good as a live album can be.

You didn't mention they are also, by Jazz bass standards, very lightweight! I had one (in black) for a while and was utterly amazed at how good it was at the price point. When I picked it up the neck was so straight and the action so low that I had to actually alter it to fit in with my heavy-handed thumpings. They don't get a mention as much as the VM or CV but I think for the money these are amazing. Plays like a Jazz, sounds like a Jazz, feels like a Jazz but lighter.

Andytoad - tone is such an illusive quality that if you think you have found it with an SG type bass then nab it! Size of bass - who cares? I posted this before but check out Hamish Stuart, not a small man and a bit of a geezer by all accounts, playing a Mustang. No-one appears to pointing and laughing. http://youtu.be/qSP5yiUbDLQ I am not small - 5'10" and 100 kgs - I regularly play a Musicmaster and have just recently acquired a Danelectro Longhorn, both shortscale. The Dano is ridiculously camp, frankly, but I am not remotely bothered.

Satch is on tour here through November - the *huge* surprise for me is he is playing the Cliff's Pavilion in Southend, which is just a 4000 seater venue. I wouldn't say I was a 'fan' but it would be rude not see such an influential player locally for not a lot of dosh - got my ticket already!

I usually only change strings if I want to try different ones, rather than because the ones fitted have aged. I've been wavering between flats and rounds for years - I hear and feel the advantages of both so it has largely depended upon what type of band I am in which I have used. Currently I've decided that I want the sound of old rounds that have lost their zing but still more attack than flats, so I'm not changing any of my strings any time soon. Well, not until the band situation changes again, anyway.

Ah, I missed it first time around. Hopefully I'll miss it next time it is re-listed, too.
