[size=3]I think I was being too simplistic in spreading out my thoughts. A Vocoder, as far as I know, is an organ/synth effect, rather than a guitar effect, as used by Herbie Hancock in Rockit. I know it isn't one of those. I had in mind one of those guitar effects which was a voice box with a tube thingy as used by Joe Walsh, Peter Frampton, Richie Sambora et al. I thought the effect on the bass reminded me of this and wondered if anyone was aware of one being used with a bass. If so it might be an effective way of getting a similar sound without complicated processing.[/size]

If Skippy is peanut butter and not bush tucker then it sounds interesting. Peanut butter is, for me, food of the Devil and completely irresistible. Whole Earth Organic with no added sugars,preferably, but I'll eat any old whipped sludge in an emergency. Skippy may qualify here. I wonder if you could get this kind of effect from one of those Joe Walsh/Herbie Hancock/Peter Frampton voice box thingies with a tube. That is what it sounds like, to me, whether it is or not. Does anyone know if one of these has ever been used for a bass? if so, examples?

For me it largely depends upon what music I am playing. I prefer to just plug and play as it is less kit to carry and less to go wrong. With the two bands that I am in that are up and running I can do this - just fiddle with the eq and tubetone (it is a TC Electronic) to get the different sounds I need for the different covers we play. I have a new band in the pipeline and I fear I will need to dust off my effects again as the variety of tunes we are looking at is a little more wide ranging as will be the variety of tones I will need top play them effectively.

I think the black one is a Fender JV, not a Squier JV? Not the same thing, although I am not entirely sure what the difference is. One popped up here a while ago. Edit to make more sense - a Fender with a JV serial number, as opposed to a Squier or the early Fender logo'd 'Squier Series'. I think I read sometime that these were for the domestic market and not export. But I could have made that bit up

I have lots of basses, couple of dozen or so, but the two I would grab in the house fire scenario would be my two Squiers. My right hand would grab my best and favourite, which is a mid 80s MIJ 32" scale Precision and by some measure the bass I have felt most comfortable with, ever. My left hand would grab my JV Fender logo '57 re-issue Precision. The rest could burn.

Might be worth trying out a Fender Precision Lyte. PJ pups, active. Uber skinny neck, much like the Geddy Lee or Jaguar neck, and weighs around 7.5lbs. The P pup on its own doesn't sound exactly like a Precision but is is deep and dark. PJ together sound a bit burpy like a Jazz with both pups but perhaps a bit darker. They are usually pretty cheap to pick up too £300 +/- depending upon condition.

OK, had a fiddle this morning and can confirm the G string is fine. Also managed to pull through enough wire to turn the pup around and suddenly I have a low volume E string. So it looks like a new pup is in order. From that link the EMG-HB sounds perfect - an exact fit in the rout/pickup ring, more than enough space in the cavity for a battery and a different voicing which would actually be more up my street. Thomann happen to list the EMG-HB cheaper than anywhere and it so happens I am just about to get a whole bunch of stuff from there so that's that. Thanks all for the input, I think this will end up being a better bass as a result.
