1. That hadn't occurred to me - I'll check. Thanks. I notice the EMG HB comes with all new gubbins - pots, pcb, battery clip etc. That would solve the other issue which is dodgy tone pot - all the adjustment is in the last 1/10 of the turn.
2. I hope it works out. Steve Marriott was one of the greats but never really widely acclaimed as such. Not only was he a great RnB guitar player who just had the right feel for what he was playing, but his unique voice was versatile, powerful and one of the finest of a generation. One of the very best gigs I have ever seen was Humble Pie in the mid 70s. Be nice if he got more recognition.
3.
The G rang a bell, so I went a-looking.. sure enough, that's a Guitar pickup! Probably nowt wrong with it, but better balanced on a 6-stringer. http://www.giggear.c...SEHG-Humbucker/ I know some brands like Shadow and Select(EMG passive cheapies) used to do a bass humbucker size, so I'd be inclined to try such a one or rout for a new pickup completely. Just went further.. THIS is what you want! http://www.emgpickup.../hb-models.html
How strange! They fitted a 6 string pickup. Following that link it looks like the HB model is a direct fit and just the ticket, more P bass and less nasally! I think there is room in the cavity for the extra bits/battery etc as it is passive at the moment. Thanks for that!
4. Thanks for that. I am guessing that is what I will end up doing but there's certainly no harm in turning it around first.
5. And back atcha, Andy Nothing to be lost by trying, that's for sure. I can certainly add a bit of wire temporarily and see. Thank you!
6. I recently bought an Overwater med scale bass that was on sale here for a while. It is an absolutely beautiful thing, utter simplicity and superbly made. A small issue with it, however. Well, a couple but this one for now. The G string volume is significantly lower than the other strings. I have adjusted the pickup so it is raised at that side but it is still impossible to balance the volume of the strings. Taking the pickup out reveals it to be an EMG Select SEHG - a sealed unit so I can't raise the pole. Is there anything I can do or is it new pickup time? Thanks! Paul
7. Bargain alert! Westone Thunder 1A version 3 incl. hard case £100 BIN collection only Sutton, Surrey http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/bass-guitar-/261717883775?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item3cef99fb7f If I didn't already have one I'd be driving round the M25 at this moment.
8. I spent most of 2014 rehearsing with 2 new bands with huge amounts of time out because band members were travelling. Both now ready to get out there, so aim for these two is GIG. Had first outing of one band last Saturday and it was totally brilliant, as good a gig as I have ever had, so I am really looking forward to what this year holds. Also just about to start up a new rock covers band with some decent musos - our very first rehearsal is in just over two weeks - so will hopefully be doing some greatly rewarding stuff in 2015.
9. OK. In. Washburn semi-acoustic Ukulele bass Fender Jazz Bass Special Aria Pro II CSB 450 'Black n Gold' Overwater medium scale Westone Thunder 1A Westone Thunder 1A fretless Squier Precision medium scale Squier VM Jaguar Squier Deluxe Jazz SGC Nanyo SB-315 Out Bitsa Precision Squier VM Jaguar SGC Nanyo 315 Ibanez SR800 Squier deluxe jazz Squier Silver Series jazz ThunderJetRay Squier fretless Jazz Peavey Fury Aria Pro II Laser Classic That seems to be a net gain of two, with many appearing in both the 'in' and 'out' trays. I have convinced myself the first two don't count as the aren't 'proper' basses, so in actual fact I have reached status quo. So to speak. Edit - just done the maths, I have a net reduction by 1, under the second accounting system. That'll teach me to post with a head cold. What have I learnt? I apparently not much in terms of self-control In terms of trying all sorts of stuff, loads. I like medium scale basses. Another edit, I've gone back to round wound strings. Again.
10. The oddest (saddest?) thing about this to me is that I started the original thread and have *absolutely* no memory of doing so. Nurse? Time for my tablets!
11.
The only jacks that I will ever entertain using are the Neutrik Professional (NP) series because the business end is a one piece construction i.e. no rivet joining the solder tag to the jack. The regular right-angled versions (NP2RX) are workhorse connectors and I've never had one of those fail. There is one exception and that is the right-angled Silent jack which is inherently weak and has a tendency to come apart with heavy use.
The definitive word, surely, from a man who deals in these components every day?
12.
'Ere, are you callin' me a 'ippopotamus??
Did I mention the word 'ippopotamus? Its the one I had in mind though.
13. Recent one of my band 'Illegal Tender' when we had some piccies done for the website. Me far left.
14. Just that really. if you bought a load of strings and kept them in a drawer for 10 years, unplayed, would they sound as dull as 10 year old strings that had been played? Or would they be as bright as the day they were made? Or somewhere between? Thanks!
15. For me it makes no difference what is on the headstock. As someone said a while back, 99.99% of punters won't notice or, even if they do, care. And if anyone does actually judge you with their eyes - what is written on the headstock - as opposed to their ears - what is coming out of the speakers - then that is their problem. I put a Fender decal on a Mighty Mite neck on my bitsa Precision (now moved to a better home) mainly because it looked rather desolate with nothing up there (and the rest of the bass was a Fender, anyway). But I have gigged and will continue to gig with Squiers, Westones, Washburns, all proudly displaying their logos. As long as they are physically up to the task, sound good and not likely to fail mechanically mid-gig then if I like playing them they get gigged.
16. Is there a bass you haven't owned, FE?
17. I was going to get one of the Hercules stands that has the quick lock thing on the height adjustment until I saw one in bits in a corner of a rehearsal studio. I think the gear they have there probably gives an indication of robustness.
18.
The look would be pretty good for anyone in a glam band.
That's what I was thinking. Although not me. Unless I was forced to choose at gun point between one of those and one of those pointy black Gothy things, in which case I'd be wearing the Daisy Rock.
In fact I think it would go quite well with my new blonde wig and pink tutu.... er no, wait...
I don't know why, Mark, but I suddenly had an image from the Disney film Fantasia pop into my head...
19. P Retro. They are brilliant. Some might argue that installing a pre-amp worth more than the bass is a bit daft, but it didn't ever stop me. Plus you can take it out and resell it when you are finished fiddling.
20. 'A01xxxx' serial number but looks like the one in your avatar, it's an '85/6. Lovely.
21. It certainly works for me as a seller. As a buyer I am a bit more circumspect but, well, that's just Life isn't it.
