If you fancied black nylon flats but not fiddling with your nut (ooh err etc) to fit the Trubass strings, Status do good black nylon flats that have the same woody tone but in reasonable gauges - I think the heavy gauge Es are still only 105s. £16.99 a set. I have my fretless Thunder 1A fitted with them and they sound fantastic. I'm sure you could move on the Trubass on here easily enough.

I'm using a Fender Jazz bass Special that someone converted to active with Bartolini pups and electrics. So, yes, P/J pups, middle position, light on the treble, but actually played up close to the neck, gets me as close as I need to I think. Doesn't help me that I play with a pick, mind you.

Well, there you go. Thanks for that. Still, he wouldn't be the first player to change how he plays. I saw Argent last year and the original bassist (who looks like an extra from a Hobbit film these days) played the iconic 'Hold Your Head Up' bassline with a completely different feel to it. Held the first notes instead of cutting them off. Spoilt it, for me.

For me the studio version kind of bounces along, really rhythmic. On the face of it it seems a straightforward line but I am struggling to make it flow in the same way. But it would appear that Hugh Macdonald has the same problem live, which makes me wonder if it actually was him in the record as the feel is so different.

Thank you for that. Interesting that the tone he has live is absolutely nothing like the tone on the recording, so I am obviously being too anal about it. Or, for that matter, the feel of how he plays it. I'll have a bit of a listen to live version later today, i think. Thanks again.

For fear of upsetting Tedmanzie, I'd just like to say that my 32" scale 80s MIJ Squier Precision (which was once his) is the very nicest bass that I have ever picked up - for me, anyway. Something about the 32" scale is great, but everything else - weight, neck, playing position, tone... Can I ask a dumb question at this point? When I buy a set of new strings for my 34" scale length basses, I invariably trim a bit off the end as they are too long. Is there an issue I haven't thought of in fitting 34" scale length strings to a 32" - or even 30" scale length - bass and then just trimming off the excess? I have actually done this with a cheap set of Legacy strings on my Musicmaster and the Universe hasn't imploded yet, which kind of makes me wonder if it makes any difference at all?

Sort of still on topic - does anyone know AT music near Rettendon? A recording/rehearsal studio set in an old complex of farm buildings. They have some spooky tales to tell of sounds that shouldn't be there. Playing back recordings and a voice making a commentary on it - traced down to the track recorded on the kick drum mike. Shadows fleetingly moving just out of vision when the guy knew full well he was the only one there. Extra instruments that just weren't there in the studio. Electrical equipment fiddled with. That kind of thing. Quite eerie!

I've been tasked with learning 'Keep The faith' and am finding it hard to get the right feel to it. Anyway, my technical failings aside, it sounds to me like it was recorded on a fretless with flats, or so heavily processed that it kind of emulates that. But it could easily be my ears playing me up. Does anyone know which bass was used to record it? I tried googling it but it seems no-one can agree as to who actually played the bass on that track, let alone the type! There is often someone here with a bit of 'insider' info though...

I played guitar from age 15 to around 22 then packed it in. Mainly due to my first wife being a controlling witch. Fast forward 25 years, mid-life crisis hits, I bought a Peavey bass starter package. Played it every day for a fortnight. Then once a week for a month, then it sat in the corner gathering dust for a couple of years. Then I thought 'do something in that potty or get off' and started to practice again whilst scouring ads for bassists working on the theory that learning on the fly within the context of a band was the best way forward. I already had a rudimentary grasp of playing a stringed instrument, just had to adapt it to bass. Joined a few jams, then a couple of bands, learning the while time. Had my first public gig at 50. Now in 3 bands, still learning. Have to say it feels like that small piece of me that was missing during the 'wilderness years' of not playing has finally fallen back into place.

If you want to stretch your £££ look at small hand luggage sized suitcases or laptops cases in charity shops - probably get sorted for a couple of quid. Might not look as cool, though.

I don't think anyone could give you a definitive answer as it depends how much it is worth *to you*. There is one in good nick on eBay at the moment without the painting on the back that has a bid of £40 with 4 days left. Version 3 had this change along with the other slight spec changes - Magnabass pup, high mass bridge, longer fretboard (fretted models have the same 22fret neck as the Thunder Jet) and lighter body weight.
