2. Lovely post Andy. How long do they glow for from one 'charging'?
3. I think the black one is a Fender JV, not a Squier JV? Not the same thing, although I am not entirely sure what the difference is. One popped up here a while ago. Edit to make more sense - a Fender with a JV serial number, as opposed to a Squier or the early Fender logo'd 'Squier Series'. I think I read sometime that these were for the domestic market and not export. But I could have made that bit up
4. Should have guessed from the rest of your set...
5.
Seems ironic that they can get a parcel all the way from Germany to England in slightly less than 24 hours, but that final 170 miles took 72 hours...
I bought a bass from Kukkanyan on here. It took just 3 days to get from Tokyo to UK, then sat in the Coventry depot of Parcel Force for a week whilst waiting for someone to get around to rubber stamping the customs declaration.
6. ^^Great link^^
7. That's 2 set lists with 'Big Boss Man' in - this is the Fester and Vomits track, no? About as obscure as it gets yet here it is twice! Great song - what came first - this or Billie Jean?
8. The devil is in the detail!
9.
Link Wray has a brother called Sting who only performs using his Christian name.
A little known fact, but 'Link' Wray acquired his nickname because of his ability to eat 2 lbs of sausages at a sitting. He actually disappeared for around a decade in his early 20s. A skeleton was dug up in a quarry situated in the small East Sussex town of Piltdown, initially believed to be that of the missing young man but which transpired was a hoax.
10.
I just went back and looked at that logo - it's an odd sci-fi influenced thing, the "designed and built" bit works quite well - but the rest of it... the b and d echo quite nicely - but that f is the most disgusting thing I've seen for a while, and also oddly seems upper case... it just kinda works against the whole "very well engineered technology products" by having such an odd logo.... all IMO IME of course... .
The F is surely the same set of lines as the B and D with a little bit missing? Aesthetically it works for me, and I work in design too. My one and only gripe (incl. logo, handles, finish, sound, weight etc) is that when I stick my Midget on top of my Compact I have logos that go at right angles to each other. I'd quite like to put the one on my Midget the other way around. It doesn't really matter which way it faces when used on its own.
11. Hi James - to be honest I guess it is more idle curiosity than any serious need to know. I am in the market for a lightweight Jazz but I think I will hold out for a 32" scale one. But yours is a cracker, I must say.
12. How much does this beauty weigh, please?
13. 14. The lefty on bass with the overdriven Wal - never known his name but I know the vid you mean. Brilliant. I don't Need No Doctor, 'nuf said. http://youtu.be/s4a8AfR8kuI
15. I have lots of basses, couple of dozen or so, but the two I would grab in the house fire scenario would be my two Squiers. My right hand would grab my best and favourite, which is a mid 80s MIJ 32" scale Precision and by some measure the bass I have felt most comfortable with, ever. My left hand would grab my JV Fender logo '57 re-issue Precision. The rest could burn.

PJ bass?

Might be worth trying out a Fender Precision Lyte. PJ pups, active. Uber skinny neck, much like the Geddy Lee or Jaguar neck, and weighs around 7.5lbs. The P pup on its own doesn't sound exactly like a Precision but is is deep and dark. PJ together sound a bit burpy like a Jazz with both pups but perhaps a bit darker. They are usually pretty cheap to pick up too £300 +/- depending upon condition.
17. OK, had a fiddle this morning and can confirm the G string is fine. Also managed to pull through enough wire to turn the pup around and suddenly I have a low volume E string. So it looks like a new pup is in order. From that link the EMG-HB sounds perfect - an exact fit in the rout/pickup ring, more than enough space in the cavity for a battery and a different voicing which would actually be more up my street. Thomann happen to list the EMG-HB cheaper than anywhere and it so happens I am just about to get a whole bunch of stuff from there so that's that. Thanks all for the input, I think this will end up being a better bass as a result.
18. That hadn't occurred to me - I'll check. Thanks. I notice the EMG HB comes with all new gubbins - pots, pcb, battery clip etc. That would solve the other issue which is dodgy tone pot - all the adjustment is in the last 1/10 of the turn.
19. I hope it works out. Steve Marriott was one of the greats but never really widely acclaimed as such. Not only was he a great RnB guitar player who just had the right feel for what he was playing, but his unique voice was versatile, powerful and one of the finest of a generation. One of the very best gigs I have ever seen was Humble Pie in the mid 70s. Be nice if he got more recognition.
20.
The G rang a bell, so I went a-looking.. sure enough, that's a Guitar pickup! Probably nowt wrong with it, but better balanced on a 6-stringer. http://www.giggear.c...SEHG-Humbucker/ I know some brands like Shadow and Select(EMG passive cheapies) used to do a bass humbucker size, so I'd be inclined to try such a one or rout for a new pickup completely. Just went further.. THIS is what you want! http://www.emgpickup.../hb-models.html
How strange! They fitted a 6 string pickup. Following that link it looks like the HB model is a direct fit and just the ticket, more P bass and less nasally! I think there is room in the cavity for the extra bits/battery etc as it is passive at the moment. Thanks for that!
21. Thanks for that. I am guessing that is what I will end up doing but there's certainly no harm in turning it around first.
22. And back atcha, Andy Nothing to be lost by trying, that's for sure. I can certainly add a bit of wire temporarily and see. Thank you!
23. I recently bought an Overwater med scale bass that was on sale here for a while. It is an absolutely beautiful thing, utter simplicity and superbly made. A small issue with it, however. Well, a couple but this one for now. The G string volume is significantly lower than the other strings. I have adjusted the pickup so it is raised at that side but it is still impossible to balance the volume of the strings. Taking the pickup out reveals it to be an EMG Select SEHG - a sealed unit so I can't raise the pole. Is there anything I can do or is it new pickup time? Thanks! Paul
