1. Of course. We all like what we like etc etc and nowhere is it quite so varied than in the entirely subjective qualities of 'tone'. But I was actually just having a playful dig at JTUK rather than adding anything sensible to the discussion.
2. But sometimes a drummer can be just plain crap and never going to make it, which was the situation I found myself in a couple of times. One was a learner who read charts as he was going and didn't seem very promising. I heard him play a year later and he was worse. Another had been playing badly for 25 years and unlikely to improve at his stage.
3. Ah, I see. Sorry. On this one, nothing has changed at all - it is stock as far as I can see, What I meant was that Nigel pimped his one, not this one.
4. Yes I have and would always in future if it arose. Sometimes just the threat of leaving is enough - I don't like to put people in a position where they have to choose 'him or me' but, well, occasionally that's the way I have felt and thankfully it has always worked out. Like a lot of people on here I don't play for the money, the sex or drugs - it is for fun and the buzz of being part of a tight rhythm section is a big bit of that. 'If it isn't fun its time to run'
5.
but no one can convince me that lightweight matches up or not that I have heard.
Have you ever considered Barefaced cabs, at all?......... Just my 2 bobs worth. Like chris_b I don't have the choice so old school is out of the question. I imagine if my back had remained in good nick I would still be using my old Trace Elliot rig as I *really* liked it - turn up anywhere, push in the pre-set, let the 18" cab flap my trousers around. But having been forced down the road of light gear I probably wouldn't turn back even if I could as there is something quite liberating about 'portability without sacrificing sound'.
6. Creativity is the life force of any facet of art, without it aesthetics stagnate. The tricky bit is sorting the wheat from the chaff, at least as far as I am concerned - but therein lies the problem as any form of art is subjective. To my ears, the overwhelming majority of 'new' originals bands I have listened to might have created their material but it isn't worth listening to. Writing good material is, imo, extremely difficult. Maybe I am fussy, I don't know. An example - I saw Imelda May a couple of nights ago and, mainly, enjoyed the gig. But I felt she had 1 hour of good material padded out by nearly an hour of stuff that didn't quite hit the mark. And she is a popular artist, so maybe I am just fussy. I would personally rather play in a covers band where you can choose from a distillation of the best tunes of the last 50 years that have stood the test of time - great tunes to play that people are familiar with, or occasionally great tunes that people should be familiar with but aren't. To doggedly stick to churning out second rate material just because someone in the band wrote it I would find depressing. Of course if anyone is lucky enough to be involved in an originals band that wrote strong material then that's great. It just seems to me to be a rarity.
7. I am surprised no-one has mentioned OBBM yet... I went through a phase of making my own but it doesn't really work out much cheaper and his stuff is so much better.
8.
My mum used to say, 'Red hat - no knickers'.
Was that when she was helping you choose your outfit for the day? I'd heard same but 'red shoes'. Either way there must be a lot of ladies around who aren't wearing knickers. Presumably those wearing fur coats, red shoes and matching hat.
9. I was mistaken - knobs are the same size except the treble one is smaller. Small dink in rear of headstock shown. Still has plastic on the rear control plate! Some pics.
10. hah! Royalty - not quite. Just for showing off - all 'fur coat and no knickers'.
11. That would be it. Whole poached salmon in arsepic.
12. Incredible value for money - only 4 Euro! Sounds luvverly, too. I remember for dinner parties (how 60s-tastic!) my mum used to do a whole salmon on a platter covered in something that resembled the gloss finish on that bass.
13. I bought this on a whim, now decided to move it on as, realistically, it isn't going to get used and I have GAS for something else. Post all about how it came to be mine here: http://basschat.co.u...30#entry2593839 Long scale, MM style pickup, Active, 3 band eq, quick-fit battery compartment at rear. One knob is bigger than the others - the mids - no idea why but it is actually quite helpful as I think that is the adjustment that makes most difference. Weighs around 9lbs, really good skinny neck. Made in Indonesia in 2011. High volume output and aggressive middy tone but can easily be tamed. Good nick. Slight ding on headtsock, I think that is about it. Famously pimped into a Zulu bass by Nigel. http://basschat.co.u...hl__zulu%20bass £90 plus postage, which would be around £15. Or collected from SS7. Happy to meet half way or deliver for fuel within reason. Pics tomorrow. Bank Transfer, Pay Pal gift or cash.
14. Moving on my Genz Benz Streamliner 600 as I have finally decided I prefer my TC Electronic head and have just bought a cheaper 'back-up'. I actually prefer the sound of the GB but find the TC easier to use. So - this is used not abused, a few little scuffs here and there. I did the pre-amp valve change to make the gain more usable but will include the originals. One small issue - the blue LED that lights up the inside packed up - a common fault. I was sent replacements but never got around to fitting them - they will be included. The carry bag has the usual fraying around the zip where the layers have separated. Still got the kettle lead. Manual is somewhere safe, which is where I suspect it will remain unless I find it - download online here http://www.genzbenz...._600_manual.pdf. I'll take some pictures tomorrow but, well, it is just a Genz Benz Streamliner 600... Plenty of talk on here about them. Here is a link to all the spec from the GB website, pics etc. http://www.genzbenz....&sid=675&cid=95 £290 posted to UK mainland or £275 collected from SS7. Would meet half way or deliver for fuel costs. Bank transfer or Pay Pal gift. Ta!
15. +1000 for Interparcel. Adding insurance up to or slightly above the value of the bass can affect the carriage price a fair bit - difference between a £500 bass and a £150 is a tenner or so - you can have a look at the quote menu at Interparcel website and enter different values to give you an idea.
16. An absolute cracker! It is almost luminescent.
17.
Are the necks much wider on a five string?
Very approximately 1/4 as wide again... Some are actually 'reasonably' narrow, but that can make the string spacing a bit tight and not everyone likes that. As has been said - the only way you will find out is to get one and live with it for a while. I tried a cheap one, didn't get on with it. Coupe of years later to cure a particularly strong episode of GAS for a 5er I bought an SGC Nanyo Bass Collection one (SB-315?), which was a great quality instrument at a great price, and still didn't get on with it.
18. Also an ad in any rehearsal studios locally wouldn't hurt - even a chat with the guys who run them as they often have an idea of who is doing what.
