I saw him do an acoustic set - sometimes with piano player, sometimes not and just on his own - a few weeks ago locally at what would be, for him, a small venue - the Cliffs Pavilion in Southend. Seemed rude not to go when such a big name was playing there, even though I wouldn't call myself a fan by any means. I left the gig feeling I'd seen someone with exceptional talent. He was confident, relaxed, had great vocals, excellent stage presence and managed to put in enough light and shade with just a guitar and piano to make the night fly past. Strangely it was some of my least favourite Bryan Adams tunes that I enjoyed most on the night. I still have no inclination to see him with his band but he has gone up hugely in my estimation. I think if you like the band and the tunes you'll be in for a superb night.

I have a Mighty Mite Jazz neck on my MIJ Precision and it is brilliant. I think they represent excellent value for money and are a direct fit in the neck pocket. Dimensions are about the same as the Squier necks. But none of those particular Fender necks are quite as slim as the Ibanez SR neck, which is exceptionally shallow - my old SR800 had the smallest neck I have ever owner. Of the Fenders I have had/tried only the Geddy Lee, Jaguar or Precision Lyte necks come up as shallow as an SR neck.

Back from a holiday - but, yes, it was the A that was dead. I've since had a couple more sets and they were all fine.

80s MIJ Jazz Bass Special and Power Jazz Bass Special both were P bodies, PJ pups with J necks. Lovely things.

Depends on the stand - if it is one of these it won't fold down easily. If it is more like one of these a mic stand bag would work. I recently bought a padded rifle bag - much the same thing but cheaper.

Taking out the entire old set would still involve snipping wires as they pass through a small hole from the pickup cavity into the control cavity - so you can't avoid it. But you could use a small connecting block with screw terminals to re-join the wires if you don't fancy soldering.

Over the past couple of years I have put Badass, Gotoh, Hipshot A style and generic cheap Gotoh-a-like high mass bridges on my main 'test bed' Precision. In terms of tone and sustain I can't honestly say it ever made a scrap of difference over the BBOT. In terms of string changing/looks/adjustability/having a great bit of kit they were an improvement. In terms of comfort they were an improvement as I always seemed to rest my palm on something sharp on the BBOT. But I seem to have gone full circle and stuck the BBOT back on again.

It actually couldn't be easier and doesn't involve any soldering at all. When John's kit arrives, unscrew the control plate and you will see what bits correspond to the existing set up. Snip the wires coming from the pickups to the pots (I'd leave a couple of mm on so you know which goes where if you want to put them back), gently prise the knobs off the shafts (oh er etc), undo the nuts (oh er etc) and take out the old assembly. Put the new ones in, tighten up the nuts, stick yer knobs back on and then use the connector block screw terminals to attach the pup wires. Then screw the control plate back. Job done. 15 mins. Edit - If you were nervous about it I think John sells complete control plates, already wired and ready to go.

I don't know how much a truss rod costs to repair but I would certainly second recommendations for a Mighty Mite neck. I have one on a MIJ Precision body (in my case a Jazz neck) and it is great - they cost around £100 on eBay.

Keep your eyes peeled! They pop up here occasionally. Actually the one I have now has popped up here a few times, you can work your way through the owners. I think I am the 4th BCer. Anyway, E Series, 84-86 I think, I've only seen pictures of white ones, not sure if they came in other colours.

Earlier in the year I decided I wanted to buy a quality Precision bass for under £1000. My two criteria were to buy one that might increase in value but also that I could use as a gigging bass. So for me it had to be under 9lbs with a slim neck. I also have a bit of a thing for mid 80s MIJ instruments. An 82 Squier 52 Re-issue model in tobacco burst JV0 series with large Fender Logo became available on here and it just ticked all the right boxes. It is superb in every respect and I consider it to be money well spent. I am sure if i walked into a shop with £1000 I might be able to buy an equally superb brand new bass, but I just like the idea of having an older one.

I saw them at the Cliff's Pavilion in Westcliff last Friday. I've seen them I think 7 or 8 times since the mid 80s and I thought this was honestly as good a performance from them that I have seen. The new material is superb and a great return to their roots of acid-jazz dance stuff. Hardly any showboating from Mr King - some of the new material features finger style and even pick playing! Never seen him play with a pick before. Lighting was absolutely top drawer. I even enjoyed the singer/songwriter support bashing out choons on his geetar. An excellent night's entertainment. Saturday morning Mrs S says 'Do you want to see Level 42 again tomorrow? There are good seats still available for Albert Hall'. So we saw them again last night! If anything it was a better night - the sound was more hi-fi there and not as loud. Good to see a favourite from 30 years ago still as strong as ever. Plus we went to the Tower to look at the poppies then had a good Lebanese meal before the gig. A good day.
