1. At the end of it all it is going to be your ears that will decide which pup is *the one* - a Kiogon wiring loom has screw terminals that make changing pups very easy - probably best to do what I did and just keep buying the various pups on here secondhand so you can compare them in situ after living with each for a while. Move them on if they don't suit - usually for the same or a very slight reduction in money - until you find the tone you are looking for. On paper many of those mentioned seemed ideal yet when fitted to my bass they didn't do it for me.
2. I'd add Wizard Trad and Fender 62 reissue Original. Always subjective but these are the two that do 'vintage P Bass' tone for me.
3.
Pleased to be the first to leave feedback for Julian. He bought my J Retro in the smoothest of transactions. Good comms, friendly chap, I wouldn't hesitate to deal with him again
In fact, I didn't hesitate! Bought a Fender Original pickup from Julian in, again, the easiest of transactions. Ta!
4. Always double check the mute switch, just to make sure it isn't still engaged. And, yes, what *is* wrong with leather trilby hats?
5. £200 for a MIJ Fender Precision is an absolute steal, even with a few niggles. I had the active version - Power Jazz Bass Special - and it was really lovely. They have a Jazz width neck, btw. Even if the neck is knackered for around £100 you could get a Mighty Mite neck of your choice and it would still be cheap.
6. Don't get me wrong - I quite liked the ebanol board on the VMJ too. I've had 2 over the last few years when having need of a fretless. I had a fretted Squier Jazz Deluxe that also sported an ebanol board and that was good, too. I just really like Westones in general, especially the Thunder 1As. I believe they are better quality basses than the VMJ Squiers - but I also believed they were all too heavy. Then I discovered that version 3 is lightweight and that was that, really.
7. I have one of those models - it is very nice. 1A version 3 - lightweight, great unlined neck, I prefer the Magnabass pickup over the split, too. For my ears it has a sweet spot on the bass/treble boost/cut that really brings out the mwah factor. IMO knocks spots over the much loved Squier VMJ fretless I used to have before this took its place.
8. Bought a U Bass from Mike in the most straightforward of transactions. Good comms throughout, speedily dispatched and packed to withstand a nuclear holocaust. Top bloke!
9. I have a Lowpro Rezo30 compact camera pouch that is pretty much an exact fit for the Line 6 G50 receiver. It has a velcro belt loop with additional pop fastener, so quite secure. 10.
I've not heard of this make... Do you think it would be rugged enough for being put in the hold of a plane..?
I hate to appear to be a party pooper for somebody else's sale but I have a Mono gig bag - newer model than this one - yes it is a great bit of kit but I wouldn't trust it in the hold and a plane for a second.
11. Thank you for the explanation - it has made a lot of it much clearer. I hadn't even considered wired in ear but would think the logistics of that must be difficult to work out. I hear what you are saying about getting what you pay for but my only viable option is wireless, cheap and licence-free because the reality is that lots of money isn't in the frame yet. Any other cheapskates out there living with T Bone?
12. One of my bands are talking over the idea of using IEMs and we have kind of decided that, if we do it at all, we'll dip our toe in the water at the budget end of the scale to see how we get on with it. Our drummer uses T Bone in another of his bands and reckons it is ok, so that is what we are probably going to try. Reading on here seems to indicate it is actually the earphones that are the most important bit, rather than the transmitter/receiver bit. As usual it has fallen on my lap to look into it but, frankly, I have no idea what I am looking at and am really confused - so please help!! I have had a look at the T Bone stuff and see different models - 75, 100, 200 - and also the difference frequencies. What practically speaking are all these differences? Thanks in advance. Paul
13. Ah, I see. Sorry, I don't know. They are 'old-school' and 'woody', if that helps...
14. Andy - it is sometimes called the 62 re-issue model. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fender-Original-1962-Precision-Bass-Pickup-/181261985220?_trksid=p2054897.l4275 My latest Precision came with one fitted and, for the tone I am looking for, it is even better than my previous best and favourite, the Wizard Trad. I am wondering what my other P will be like with one in.
15. That's the trouble with GAS - once you get an idea in your head you can't just lego of it.
16. Anyone having a 'bits' clear out?
17. And ree-plyed Still looking.....
18. Or, indeed, if you have one/some to sell, I am in the market. Ta.
19. Just listed, silly start price of £39. Collection only, Newcastle. I have recently bought a fretted one - these are top end of the range, set neck, sculpted body, brass hardware including the nut. Medium scale. Great tone. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bargain-Fretless-bass-with-new-flatwound-strings-/111402251697?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item19f01775b1 This could be a real bargain!
20. As per title. I have a Wizard Trad fitted to my bitsa Precision but would like to swap it for a Fender '62 Original. If anyone fancies doing the reverse, give me a holler! Ta Paul
21. I was there! Black Sabbath were brilliant, big surprise Ozzy was singing ok! The sound, when it was running ok, was very good. Geezer's bass was stunning, they played a killer set. Horses for courses, I thought Soulfly were terrible - not my thing more than a quality issue. Motorhead went through the motions, poor old Lemmy's hands were trembling badly all the time. I enjoyed Soundgarden, not familiar with too much of their stuff but I thought they played well. But for me Faith No More were a revelation. Not seen them before, only slightly familiar with their material so by no means a fan, but they were razor sharp. Played every note like they meant it. I loved the image, the whole set dressing of white sheets and flowers, the priest outfits, the fact they all (except the drummer) look like they left their city jobs and dressed for the gig. Mike Patton was so completely on the money - hit and held the notes every time, great presence, spat out lines from The Exorcist and the rites of Exorcism here and there. It was a monumental front man performance backed by a tighter than tight band. Food choices were good, free water, not enough toilets. I drove up - parked in the Q6 car park, got back home without a single second hold up. Great day out.
22. I had a Silver Series Squier P Bass for a while and it was absolutely lovely. I kind of wish I hadn't sold it. What colour is your one, Rog? Any pics? The main difference is the scale length, which on this is 32" compared to 34" on the Silver Series - in that last pic you can see the longer 34" scale length 'typical' P Bass. I find the medium scale length particularly comfortable to play, don't know why as I don't have short arms or small hands. The neck is similar width to yours - narrow by P Bass standards at 40mm. The body is very slightly smaller and quite a bit lighter. As I recall my Silver Series was around 8lbs, no heavyweight by any means, but this is around 7lbs. This has had a pickup change done - now sporting Fender Original - and I'd say the Silver Series pickup sounds more like this Fender Original - one of the best things about the Silver Series Precision is the tone. They were made about 10 years apart, too - this is an '84, I think Silver Series were '93/94 or thereabouts? Similar build quality between this and Silver Series, too. I've read that later 80s ones weren't so hot but they returned to form when producing the Silver Series. Certainly the Silver Series Precision and Jazz I have owned indicate this is so, both were fine intruments. I actually think it terms of value for money the Silver Series Precisions are unbeatable - I paid nearly twice as much for this fella as I did for the Silver Series. But, then again, I don't think they made many of these medium scales so I guess that commands a premium. I am glad I jumped - I was hesitant to start with.
23. ... to my advantage. This is a 'good strap' for sure. Probably the best of the ones I have tried recently, including the comforrtttt strrappp and some leather ones.
