My first choice of flats is LaBella Deep Talking 760FLs. Quite like TI Jazz flats, too, thereafter any flats at all over roundwounds. I have been gradually stockpiling them when they come up for sale here secondhand and now have all my basses strung with flats. I went through a period of thinking I needed roundwounds to get the right kind of attack for heavy rock but, now I have changed back to flats, find I can still get all the oomph I need by changing the EQ. For me, and the sound I am looking for, nothing, but nothing, quite sounds like an old school woody Precision with flats.
1994/Headpins? Haven't heard that name in yonks. Now must check spotify.
Not sure that is the same Karen Lawrence? The one I have in mind fronts(or fronted) Blue by Nature, sort of country-style blues band. Thinking about it, she is unlikely to be in a kitchen anywhere in England, and is probably 10 years too young, but certainly got the pipes to qualify. Without wishing to hijack the thread, here is Ms Lawrence swaying her hips rather interestingly and generally giving it some welly. http://youtu.be/sqx-1ME6rxo

The MS-60B is the only pedal I use at the moment but I don't find the tuner on mine particularly accurate or sensitive, unfortunately, to the point that I am considering adding a tuner. Seems every time I hit the string it shows something different. Which kind of spoils the whole 1 pedal thing for me rather.
It's actually our kitchen, the MiL lives with us.
Ah. Thought the story was too good to be true....
I think you are spot on, thanks Jon. Looks interesting. I wonder how heavy and how wide the necks on these fellas are?
I can answer these questions as I asked the seller - 3.9kg and 38mm nut, although the neck at the nut is a little wider at 41.5mm, he says. -
Wow. Do we get to hear how exactly this goddess of rock ended up in your MIL's kitchen? Does she deliver for Ocado? If so I might start online shopping. Seems pretty bizarre!

I'd get off in court. Got a weakness for redheads. And Kiki Dee is, I think, one of our most under-valued singers. Karen Lawrence?

Just as well otherwise I would come over, kill you, hide the body and take your place.

Kiki Dee?

Here's mine, keep it simple!

You could try glueing it together if the halves make a good join? I had a lump fall off a Fender Jaguar nut and my regular tech guy just glued it back with some sort of resin stuff. Wasn't a problem subsequently.

Can't go wrong with Bass Doc, reasonably priced and superb quality. BWB does it for me - I have the same colourway on my main P Bass.
Well - Quest is a Vantage sub-brand, and early Vantages (and Quests) were Matsumoku-built. There's a Quest catalogue here and this looks like it might be the model Q-B, although it's kinda hard to tell! If anyone wants to sell me a Manhattan M-3BZ I'd be very willing to re-engage with my "problem"... J.
I think you are spot on, thanks Jon. Looks interesting. Quest bass - anyone know anything about these? Looks like a Washburn Force 4 with a Westone Spectrum neck. Same here - 4 bands. As has been said - keep everything transparent and first come, first served.

Bought a geetah slide thingy from Paul in the simplest of transactions. An absolute pleasure. Except maybe not for the rest of the household. Gonna dust my broom in the mornin....

A song you have always wanted to play live......
Paul S replied to Jazzneck's topic in General Discussion
Played both Ace of Spades and Highway Star with my old heavy rock covers band, now sadly imploded. Both great tracks to play live. Bad quality recording alert! http://youtu.be/ZSEIwp0n6Rc -

That is a very good price, I reckon. Very 80s. The real deal is the neck through, 2+2 headstock, top of the range, Westone flagship model Pantera Deluxe II X790 which are exceedingly rare and do go for very good prices (I have one, paid a lot for it). Those cost £600 new in 1987, which was a lot of money then. But I think the pickups and electrics are much the same, in which case it is HOT. I wasn't keen on the tone with roundwound strings but with flats it has been transformed into something rather quite special. -
Looks JapCrappy, 2+2 headstock, interesting Telebass type controls, 2 octave neck. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/131123144644?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 Collection only from Barnstaple, start price £20, no bids yet. Or details. The hard case must be worth £20.

I generally like black above all other colours but that green is lovely. Anyone know the difference between the 1000 and 800? I bought a '90s SR800 on here (black) and it just back from having the electrics sorted and back to stock. I have to say it has caused some seismic shifts in my mindset because it is actually totally brilliant. I knew it would be light, I knew the neck would be skinny but I didn't know it would sound *so* good and feel *so* right. Not saying I'm out of love with my Precisions but I feel some two timing coming on....

I'd add a Squier Bronco or Epiphone EB0 to the list. Both can be bought *very* cheap secondhand - under £100 - if he tries and doesn't like they can be moved on with next to no loss. Or, again sold on and something nicer bought if he does get on with it.

I like bass guitars. I have 14 of them at the moment. I am endlessly curious about what one will offer over and above another, so keep getting new ones. I enjoy them all and for home practice and rehearsals will use any or all of them according to whim. I have a couple that are main gigging basses, but will sometimes use one of the others just for the sake of it. None are boutique or particularly expensive (my JV0 Squier P Bass being the most expensive by some way) - most cost me between £150-200. But, even if they had cost me several grand each, what does it matter? If you can afford them, you want them and have the space to keep them then what the heck.
Have to admit if playing higher notes - as in above a regular D - I prefer to play them further up the E or A strings, you get a really nice thick sound up there.
Yup - couldn't agree more. I reckon the best tones to be had out of a Precision are between the 5th and 12th frets. Having a nice time currently learning the opening bits from Sabbath's Fairies Wear Boots which is largely played in that territory. Strike the strings at the base of the neck and - vwahlah - sounds lovely!

I have a Wizard Trad on my bitsa Precision. I tested many different pups to find the old school, woody P Bass sound I had in my head and the Wizard Trad captured it.
