1. Ah. A much bigger problem than I realised! Strike my complaint from the record!
2. I bought the 'Studio Spares' own brand equivalent, which was cheaper. Struggling to find it on their website at the moment, though. But it is invaluable - probably the single cheapest improvement in your sound you can make.
3. How about a compromise - if you have the time and inclination, change the bridge pup for the one you have already and see if it is an improvement. If it is, buy the matching one. If not, change it back and keep/sell on the pup you have.
4. Some feedback from me, if nobody minds. Firstly - I would like to state unequivocally that Basschat is the very best internet forum I have ever seen. I am very happy to go with the admin changes/moderation/charges for market place. I think everyone involved behind the scenes at Basschat does sterling work in the face of adversity - I ran a forum for 9 years and fully appreciate all the work that goes on and what a completely thankless task it is. Therefore I hate to be openly critical of the site, even on a tiny detail. However. Blocking bumping in the 'wanted' section does seem to me to be unnecessarily bureaucratic and pretty much makes it redundant. The numbers involved must be miniscule. When I have offered a bass for sale and I go to bump the advert after 48hrs it has usually sunk down to page 5 or 6 in that time. If I have a 'wanted' ad placed, it might still be on page 1 or sunk down to page 2 at the most. And that is alongside all the other misc. wanted ads for basses, cabs, amps, effects, leads, strings, straps, used gaffa tape etc. But eventually the ad drops and, without a bump, gets forgotten. I can't imagine many people search the 'wanted' section before placing a 'for sale' so the formerly useful marriage between people looking for silly things and people with surplus silly things gets lost. It just seems to be such small beans that it is hardly worth the effort and/or the minor irritation. I am sure one or two people feel pleased with themselves when they slip though the net and offer somebody a sale outside of the 'for sale' section but it must represent a miniscule minority of transactions. Or maybe not - have I missed something along the way?
5. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Peavey-Fury-Bass-Guitar-/151167839717?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item23324e2de5 Just been listed. I have one courtesy of Flat Eric which is very nice indeed. Mine is lightweight (around 8lbs or so I think) with a *really* skinny and shallow neck, and I mean *really* skinny (37mm) and shallow. Precision bass-a-like with a slightly more aggressive tone than the usual Precision bass. These are beautifully made - in the USA - but go for a song. I reckon this will be lucky to top £170, which is a crime.
6.
But I do think it's a pity that a few people who have abused the "insert whatever the heck you like here" , have spoilt it for the majority of us.
Welcome to Life. That's why the statute books are brimming over with stuff.
7. I have recently joined an 80s band and had some strong misgivings about the cheesier side of the tracks that had been selected before I teamed up with them. 2 gigs on and I am really getting into the spirit of it - we really went down well and people kept saying how refreshing it was to hear something different (not many 80s bands in SE Essex, it seems). But, yes, as well as the cheese there was some quality stuff from that era - Tears For Fears, Simple Minds, Spandau ballet, Hall and Oates, INXS, plus all the hair rock/power ballads - Foreigner, Starship, Journey, Toto etc. I've even started to enjoy playing 'Eye Of The Tiger' - heaven help me. I guess there is no cure once that has happened.
8.
Hi Paul Anything of a fellow Basschatter - On the bathroom digital scales = 3,6 Kg's. Link address to an ebay site that sells them - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fender-Japan-Medium-Scale-Jazz-Bass-JB62M-/251377387694?pt=Guitar&hash=item3a874288ae Link to Fender Japan site - http://www.fenderjap...o.jp/jb62m.html A couple have been sold on this very web site, do a search on JB62M - you'll get more details. Oggy
Cheers Oggy. That makes it even more interesting!
9. That is very interesting. Especially the scaled down body aspect. I don't suppose you are able to weigh it, are you? The Precision Lyte has a scaled down Precision body - more Strat sized. But 34" scale (and 22 frets, too) so not exactly what you asked about.
10. What a shame. I saw UFO in 1973 - the first tour with Herr Schenker. Amazing band, one of the best of the era for me. I hope he manages to beat it but he has been in bad shape, physically, for some years.
11. I find I can get a similar sound from my TC Classic 450 > BF Compact + Midget to that of my old monster Trace Elliot rig. You just need to fiddle with the EQ a bit for the 'Trace Elliot Preset' scooped sound. Main difference is current rig is around 24kg in total, the Trace Elliot was 100kg +/-

SOLD!!!!

This is indeed a truly beautiful bass - formerly mine. A rock monster. Shame you have to move it on so quickly.
13. Something I find amusing is that when these pop up they are invariably *not* mentioned on the Shergold forum. Same with other 'specialist' forums, for example the rarer Westone models - often they don't get flagged up on the Westie forum. You can be sure everyone on those forums has spotted them, but maybe the serious collectors are worried they will miss out if they bring the listings to the attention of others! On here there seems to be much more altruism! Says me with a Marathon safely tucked away indoors...

JV gas...
they just were not entry level basses. There were many cheaper bass guitars out there. This was Fender taking on Tokai. They needed too.
This was my understanding, also. I think to dismiss the JVs as simply a cheap copy of the real thing would be a mistake. I have Luke's old JV0 Precision and it is without question the nicest Precision bass I have ever laid hands on. I can't say I have tried all the permutations, but have owned/had loan of/handled quite a few whilst looking for the 'right one'. MIJ, MIA, MIM - all sorts.
15.
MB1. ..."Return To Sender!"
16. 80s Westones are exceptionally good value and hard to beat for the price. Thunder models, Spectrum and especially Concord get a lot of love.
17.
and for those that don't know TC also have some sort of Xmas deal on their website where you can get a free gigbag and RC4 foot controller if you buy a new RH450/750 at the moment.
Why did you have to post that ?...
18. My favourite incarnation of the band was Deep Purple mark II - Made in Japan is, for my particular taste in music, a record of some of the greatest performances ever by a heavy rock band. At that point in time Ian Gillan's voice was truly remarkable - one of the finest male singers of his time and up there with Robert Plant, Paul Rodgers etc. I didn't see them during that period but saw them on the 'Burn' tour - powerful stuff and still one of the best gigs I have seen - David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes are not bad subs for Gillan! But Ian Gillan has never been close to those early days - whatever happened to his voice wasn't good and I find it weak and whiny now. I saw them shortly after Steve Morse joined a few years back and they played a load of the early mkII era tracks (and, churlishly, nothing from the post Gillan times)- it just wasn't the same. The music was great, Steve Morse is a great guitar player, but it lacked that special something from those early days.
19. This all goes to prove that 'tone' and amp recommendations are so very subjective. FWIW I have a TC Classic 450 and am very pleased with it. I like the onboard compressor - I don't have it set high but like what it does. I particularly like the Tubetone, which can add warmth or grit without changing the volume level - it is an easy amp to gig with and change settings on the fly if necessary. For most small pub/club situations I play through a BF Compact and/or Midget and it has never proved wanting for volume. Anywhere bigger and you'd generally take a line out through the pa. For rehearsal even just the Classic 450 into BF Midget could hold its own with a very loud drummer and 2 x guitarists with amps going up to 11. At some point I might get one of the RH models just to get the floorswitch and programmable pre-sets, which I would find useful.
20.
He has offered to do an International wire transfer but I have no idea who he is and could sending someone my bank details jeopardise my account security?
This is perfectly safe. Someone having your sort code and account number doesn't mean they have access to the funds in the account!
21. This one looks like a good 'un, too so it might fetch a bit more.
22. Still here. I'm away for a week on Tuesday, back on 12th.
