    As you will have gathered, different pickups will have different tones. I tried loads in my P-bass until I got the sound I wanted (Wizard Trad did it for me). If all that fiddling doesn't appeal I'd recommend trying to identify the sound you want to get and then post an example of that here. You will probably have a particular record in mind when you think of your 'ideal P Bass tone' so stick a link to a YouTube and see what people think!

    I don't know if it counts but I have a Westone Pantera Deluxe II X790. Flagship bass from Matsumoku in 1986. Not unique, but there aren't many about.     Can't speak of Schaller as I haven't used one but I have fitted Gotoh 201 and Badass bridges to Fenders. I have also fitted one you don't mention - the Hipshot A style Fender retro fit. I find all of them more comfortable as the end of the bridge is where I rest the heel of my hand and I find the BBOT is a little too sharp to rest on. I like the sturdiness of all of them. Whether or not there is a difference in sustain/tone is arguable, but that isn't my chief reason for fitting them. From an engineering point of view I'd say the Hipshot is head and shoulders above the other two and is by some way my favourite. Best value for money is the Gotoh 201. Actually, no, the best value for money was a generic Gotoh copy I bought on ebay for around £12. It did much the same job as all the others for what I required of it - not as well made but then it wasn't very expensive. But my best and favourite bass has the Hipshot fitted.

    And a bump! I mention again, as it might have been lost in the text, I would be interested in trading for a TC Electronics RH 450 but not for another bass.

We stayed half-board at a hotel and one of the 4 courses for dinner was the cheese course. Being a complete tightwad I was determined to get full value for money and eat it at any cost. To my eternal surprise I discovered I quite like some of the more rancid things like Brie and Gorgonzola.

    That is lovely. Around 2lbs too heavy for me, sadly, but someone is going to get a lovely bass for not a lot of money. I am a big Westone fan, as you may guess from my avatar - my rather nice pimped Thunder Jet.

    For sale. Sterling By Musicman SB-14, glossy black finish with black scratchplate and rosewood fretboard. This is an absolutely cracking bass. Here is all you need to know about the spec. plus demo video and review by the Bass Whisperer. Weighs a shade over 9lbs, hangs beautifully on the strap. Neck is 38mm wide at the nut, a little deeper than a Jazz bass and very comfy. Absolutely no issues. Scratchplate has some scratches on it from my enthusiastic pick playing, there is a small dink near the jack socket. Weeny bit of buckle rash at the back but otherwise nice and shiny. Comes with a padded wrap-around gig bag with Sterling by Music Man written on the front pocket. I can take some pictures but, really, it looks just exactly like the ones on the SBMM webpage! Firm price of £380 collected from Benfleet in Essex or meet to hand over. Currently fitted with the correct Hipshot de-tuner (BT7) that I got new - if you want that on it price is £420 and I'll stick the original tuner in the bag. Fully insured next day courier would be £25. These usually change hands for over £400 and I have dropped slightly on this so it doesn't hang around for months. This was my main gigging bass for the heavy rock covers band I was in - really cut through in that situation - but the band have split and I don't see a use for it in the near future. But the main thing is, nice as it is, I simply prefer Fenders. Might consider a trade for a TC Electronic RH450 head. Edit now with a few pictures after all. Two dinks at the rear end, not one. And the buckle rash is a little worse than I remembered although the pic came out blurry.     I ask this out of curiosity, not to make any kind of point, but car stereos live happily in cars, subject to enormous temperature swings etc without blowing up - why would they be any different?

Working hard on my finger style and getting better but still default to pick for accuracy and speed. Get away with finger style on some tracks where it is more appropriate, which is good, but still need a lot of work to get it faster.

    I have a SBMM SB-14 which I like a lot. Single pup with various coil switching options, 3 band eq - changing the tone using the mid control seems particularly effective - full on it is very aggressive. Relatively lightweight at around 9lbs but better balanced on the strap than any other bass I have. A Jazz width neck that is slightly deeper than a Jazz but very comfortable. Beautifully finished and really nice to play. As has been said it cuts through the mix amazingly well and was one of my two main gigging basses for the rock covers band I was in. I actually prefer the tone of a Precision, but this has its place for sure. I sometimes think it would be nice to 'upgrade' to a Sterling, but then I wonder what a Sterling would offer that this can't do? Anyone have or tried both that can comment, at all?

    Fender Jazz Bass Special. PJ configuration, jazz neck, mid sweep. Been selling on here for around £400+/-. A stupid price!!

    Fender Precision Lyte would get my vote. OK, it is more Precision shaped than a Jazz shape (actually a Stratocaster body shape) but it sounds more like a Jazz than a Precision (especially with pups in the middle blend position). Weighs next to nothing (under 8lbs I think), beautiful *really* skinny and shallow neck. I have a lot of lightweight basses but this is the one I always go to when my back is playing up (like tonight) as it is my most comfortable and balanced bass to wear. There are a couple of beauties on ebay at the moment - black and white.

    Right - just tried that - mains USB charger thingy - and it works perfectly. I suppose it depends upon which leads you have kicking around.

    I have fitted a Gotoh 201-a-like cheapo, Gotoh 201, Badass and also a Hipshot A style onto various Fender basses. For me the best quality without doubt is the Hipshot A style. It is also the most expensive! The best value for money is the cheapo Gotoh 201-a-like which cost around £13 on eBay. It does much the same as the Gotoh 201 but is slightly less well engineered, unsurprisingly. But it works.

    The manual doesn't seem to mention using the USB as a power source at the early bit when it tells you how to switch it on, only at the very end 'specs' bit in passing. Nothing ventured... I just tried mine and, although the unit powered up, it made a god-awful noise when I plugged it all in. I am guessing it provides enough power to update the software etc but little else.

    If you stick 'sciatic stretch' into YouTube you will actually get a number of fairly useful stretch exercises to do that help alleviate it. I think the worst thing about sciatica is not actually knowing how long it is going to last. First time I had it I couldn't walk *at all* for 3 days but it gradually got better and better. I found making myself walk seemed to speed up recovery, even though my foot was completely numb and I was walking weirdly. After 3 weeks it was almost back to normal, although I have been left with residually numb toes on that side. Usually it cures itself - the bit of the nerve that is poking out of the protective cage of the spine and getting nipped will get sealed off from the main nerve and then gradually be absorbed and disappear.

    If it were mine I would mod the existing bass. It is possible to buy stuff on here secondhand cheaply enough and you will end up with a bass that not only feels right and comfy but, after a bit of trial and error, will be exactly what you want. Stuff that doesn't do what you want, and/or when and if the times comes for moving the bass on, just return it to stock and sell all the bits at negligible loss. The huge bonus is that you will have all that modding experience in the bank and probably even bond with the instrument a little more, having rummaged about in its insides.

    Out of curiosity - anyone know - do the B2A fretless have fret lines or are they smooth? I know there is a de-fretted on eBay at the moment but that isn't the same.
