I always say this but Westone Thunder basses make a good start for modding and can be bought reasonably priced as they are unfashionable. They have great necks, made of decent woods and are easy to work on. I have a Westone Thunder Jet with SPB-3 pup, high mass bridge and a P-retro on board and it is a monster.

My pleasure to be the first to add feedback for Ian (mally2112). He bought my Hohner B Bass in the simplest of transactions. Instant payment, good comms. It has been a pleasure doing business, sir. Enjoy the bass!
Not really a fan of lined rulers - unlined ones look so much classier.
Brilliant. -
24 fret J type bass..with thru neck....who makes one ?
Paul S replied to alembic1989's topic in Bass Guitars
I believe there would be a number of Peavey basses that fit that bill - Grind, Cirrus? Not exactly like a Jazz, but 2 pickup through neck that is nearer Jazz width than P width - Hohner B Bass. I also have a Westone Pantera Deluxe II X790 which, back in the day, was the Westone flagship bass - 2 pup, through neck (well, set neck) with gorgeous sculpted body. That is *gorgeous* -

I have one on my desk - even better with a cork backing, the words FLEXIBLE and NON-SLIP highlighted (low lighted?) and made by Helix. I had no idea it was so valuable. -

I am enjoying this thread. Lots of stuff I don't usually listen to. Here are a couple of oldies - maybe not as 'heavy' but great riffs. Budge have been mentioned, Guts plus Crash Course in Brain Surgery cover by Metallica (their own 2003 re-recording is superb, as it happens). Here is another one of their great riffs - Zoom Club http://youtu.be/VG7e3-jm3UU And Queen might not be the first band that springs to mind when talking abut heavy riffs but Son and Daughter from their heavier first album has a pretty fine riff going: http://youtu.be/94tKvktP6bY

I have a Hohner B Bass in black. You could consider this to be a headed version of 'the Jack' or a headed, full-bodied version of the B2A. These are active/passive basses with 2 pickups - controls are 2 x vol and 1 concentric bass/treble boost/cut. Switchable to passive via a toggle switch - red LED glows when active. Immense output, very loud bass. It has a through neck, 24 frets, 40mm wide at the nut. Bridge is the Steinberger licensed jobbie with the knurled adjusters (even though it has a head) and a drop D detuner. A surprising array of sounds are possible, including a decent woody P-bass tone. Weighs around 9lbs. Lovely to play, I gigged with it a couple of times and it cut through really nicely. But I have too many basses and this is the one that has to go. Lovely thing, in really nice condition except a/ the battery compartment lid is missing. It actually fits in really tight and hasn't moved since I put one in but, for neatness, I guess it might be better with one. a/ the active/passive switch was starting to get a bit flaky. Basschatter jabba the gut was kind enough to send me a replacement from his bits draw, but when I opened her up to do the transplant I found a squirt of cleaner was all that was needed. But I will include the switch in case it is needed - JTG doesn't want it back. So I have valued it accordingly. I reckon these are significantly better than most Squier basses, yet secondhand go for about the same. I would like to trade it - anything like the following J. East J. Retro Sansamp Programable DI or VT Bass Deluxe Electro-acoustic or acoustic guitar But am open to sensible suggestions? I would also sell it for £150 plus postage. As far as simple heavy cement mixer riffs go, I think Alice In Chains 'Man In The Box' must qualify for the shortlist: http://youtu.be/NHZS8S6O4-Y

headless bass....I keep getting lost....am I loosing my head?
Paul S replied to iconic's topic in General Discussion
But whenever I've tried headless versions I try to play everything about 3 frets up. I think my brain works out where I am on the fretboard from the end of the headstock so when it's not there it moves me up the neck. Plenty of people play headed and headless so I'm sure you'll get used to it,
^This^. I have a B2A. In fact I've had 3, sold the first 2 for the reason you mention - found it hard to get my head round the fact there was no head and played 2 or 3 frets up. But they are such good basses and so good to take as a back up that I decided to get a third one and persevere - and it worked eventually. Like anything else new, it is just a case of training your brain to work it out automatically. The B2A is especially weird as it hangs in a funny way, so the end of the neck is way off to the left and a bit of a stretch to fret an F. But after a while it clicks into place and you play without thinking. -
I got one of these http://www.haneberg.se/Pbass_70.htm for my bitsa. 90s MIJ P.Bass body, Mighty Mite jazz neck, J. East P. retro and Wizard Trad pup. Black/Black/Maple. Seemed a bit nude without anything on the headstock, really, and so as looks a bit 70s-ish I stuck the decal on rather than keep it blank. I am glad I did although I cannot really say exactly why. I personally think the problem with 'humorous' decals is not everyone thinks they are funny or clever. If there is no intention to deceive anyone when it comes to moving the bass on then I don't see the problem. Incidentally, that is *exactly* what it looks like - I thought maybe it had been left in the sun or the printer had run out. Actually quite like it now it is on.

Looks like he is wearing his nan's teeth in post 11. I saw them many times in the early 70s - the first time when 'Paper Plane' was released as a single from Piledriver. I attribute my current hearing loss to Rob Young's harmonica playing and Big Al's singing on Roadhouse Blues at that first gig at the Queen's Hotel in Westcliff. 'let it RAAWL baby rawl' I thought it best not to see them this time around.

White Duff Mckagan-a-like basses must be like buses - none for ages then suddenly three along at once. Like cetera's one, this is the real deal. But unlike his, it is active. Whatever your preference. I put it up for trade as it is easier for both ends of the deal to achieve value I think. RH450 with foot control is easy enough to get but you would be hard pushed to find another bass like this in this condition for this price!! This one would include a decent, if worn, EBS hard shell case. Selling options, of course. As is for £550. -£45 without the detuner, -£20 without the bridge but BBOT back on, -£20 without the strings (which have had maybe 4 hours use) -£20 for a gig bag, rather than the case. All plus postage or collection from south Essex. I'll take some more pics later if i get a chance.

Putting out a feeler to see if anyone might be interested. I have a Fender Power Jazz Special, bought here a couple of years back. MIJ mid 80s, pearl white with black headstock, in extremely good condition. This is the active one with a switchable passive mode/mid boost/parametric sweep etc. Neck is Jazz width and depth. Currently fitted with a Hipshot detuner, Gotoh bridge and Dr Marcus Miller strings. When I got it someone had changed the P-pickup for a Seymour Duncan one. I honestly haven't even looked to see which but would guess a SDP-3 from the sound. I would value this as it is at £550. It is gorgeous. A rock machine. But it is nearly 10lbs and too heavy for me to wear for long. I am interested in trading this for a TC Electronic RH450 with a RC4 foot controller. Wanna swap? A couple of old pictures - I'll take some more if there is any interest.

Bought some Wilkinson tuners from Nick - my second dealings with him and I imagine not the last. Uber-easy transaction, really helpful, good comms, great price, speedy dispatch etc etc. A pleasure, sir.
