One of my bands had a girl drummer for a while, bit of a ladette, and all this stuff was obligatory when setting up. She'd start by asking if I'd got my Big Muff out, I'd ask her the same, then always told her I preferred a Big Muff to a Fuzz Face and it went downhill from there usually. She was my wife's line manager at work, so just idle chat.

I typed them with a straight face, too.

How close to the original bass line would you play in a covers band?
Honky Tonk Woman - a great groove with dynamics brought up & down between the initial verses & choruses by simply not playing any bass. When the bass comes in it's such a simple part. Last night the bass was played all the way through the song with many more notes than old Bill W ever played. With the whole band going hell for leather through the entire song it just seemed to lose all the feel.
Strangely enough one of the worst renditions of this I have heard for a long time was by Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings. He played bass in it from the first chorus onwards and nearly all the band was there there whole time. I think this is a classic example, though, of less is more, along with the other perennial, ahem, pub band favourite 'All Right Now'. -
Funny thing - you were such a keen advocate of the Jaguar, which was so complicated I'd swear they got the controls designed by NASA, but have pretty well gone full circle to one split pup and simple controls. I have to say I am following in your footsteps to an extent and don't miss my Jag. Although I still prefer an active bass, I'm preferring a single pup. I have a couple of P/J configured basses but only ever select the P pup.

It seems such a shame - this one was of the few bands I'd listened to on here that really seemed to have got something unique going and with a promising future. You were so proud of what you had achieved with them, and for it all to go tits up like this is not good. But I guess that is rock and roll - it isn't just the rich and famous that fall foul of personality clashes. Any feedback from other members of the band or is it one Lord and Master who tells everyone what to do?
Happens to me quite a bit. This then makes the song "our version", which to me means its a cocked up version that hasn't been re arranged, its just that someone couldn't be bothered to learn it and so we all have wasted our time
The 'our version' chestnut! This used to bother me with a band I was in. The keyboard player always trotted that out as an excuse for not learning the part properly or not being able to do it properly. You end up with a set full of homogenised junk with all the highs and lows knocked out of it. -

I tend to stick to the original line but very occasionally will change one. Two examples 'Brown Sugar' - practically every version of this I listened to had a different bassline, so I ended up making one up that included bits I thought were relevant to the song but missed by other instruments in our band. 'Aint No Love' by Whitesnake (itself a cover). I love the track, a really soulful number, but hate the original bassline that wanders about constantly providing no groove whatsoever. I play a much simpler version that I think holds the tune together much more effectively. -
anyone remember the thread of someone removing paint from an ibanez i think?

Most of the rehearsal studios I have hired bass kit from have used Trace Elliot gear, which can be bought secondhand for next to nothing these days. Any of the 250 to 300 range would suit, combo or separates.

I would rather just plug and play but a couple of tracks I do with both bands either need or sound better with either fuzz or flange so I have to use them. PITA though - just more to cart about and go wrong!

Had a rehearseal last night and was able to have a minor fiddle that was inconclusive. I have EBS Unichorus on the same loop as the ODB-3 and there is no buzz at all when that is selected on its own, so I guess the loop is fine. I used the ODB-3 on its own and it still buzzed a bit so it is looking like I need to check the grounding on the bass - at least the one I used last night. Which is annoying as I shielded all the cavities, soldered extra earth leads to it and all sorts! But I guess I still need to try each pedal with a few different basses to see what happens, if anything. Thanks - given me food for thought and an idea of what to look out for now. Paul

That never occured to me! I'll try that out, thanks.

I am having problems with buzzing when I switch on a fuzz effect. Pedals I use are: guitar > Korg Pitchblack tuner > Boss LS-2 with a clean loop and a loop that has EBS Unichorus > Fuzz. So nothing complicated. First fuzz I used was EHX Big Muff - switched it on and it buzzed and shrieked. I though the problem was the pedal so I sold it. New owner reports everything is fine. Now have a Bozz ODB-3. Still buzzed and shrieked. Changed from a cheap power supply to a Johnny Shredfreak one that arrived this morning. No shriek, but still buzzes although not as badly. It varies from bass to bass, which I think seems to indicate grounding issues with the various basses as much as the effects! Also worth mentioning perhaps that I have an old Zoom BFX-708 multi-effect that is as clean as a whistle when I have the fuzz on it. If I turn down the gain, keep the eq on the ODB-3 reasonably flat and roll off the treble on the bass eq it is reduced. But still there. Do I accept this as life with a fuzz or should I be able to get shot of it completely? ta!

More Peter Green - the solo in 'Need Your Love So Bad' is a masterclass in subtlety. And, in 'Man of the World', when he sings the line 'I wish I was in Love' at the end - I almost always well up when I listen to that properly. Soooo sad. When the bass comes in on 'Smoke on The Water' When the bass comes in on 'I don't Need No Doctor' Humble Pie Rockin the Filmore. Another vote for 'Shine on You Crazy Diamond' build up. Plenty more.

How easily replaceable are you for your band?
Paul S replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
I think I am easily replaceable - classic rock, nothing fancy - just solid 'meat and potatoes' type stuff, playing in two bands. But recently, with the heavier rock band, it got to a 'him or me' situation (not that I put it like that) with our new, very talented and much experienced guitarist and the band chose me. Made me feel warm inside. -
Just arrived!! Many many thanks.

Not as much as you would imagine, sadly. I'd say £150 +/- I am a bit of a Westone bass fan, had a black '84 Thunder 1A which I absolutely loved but had to sell once I hurt my back as it was too heavy. I've now got a Thunder Jet. Just love them. But there are too many headstock snobs out there to make the re-sale value any near what the quality would indicate they are worth. Better to hang on to it and enjoy it!

Bought and sold loads of stuff on here, generally very smooth and pleasant transactions. Couple of minor irritations here and there but nobody got hurt. I feel much more confident that no one is going to shaft you when trading on here as it is something of a community - when the odd bad deal has been publicised it is great to see the way folks rally round.
Punk was good in that it made us rethink what was important about music.

But, it did seem to wake up a music scene that had perhaps become a little stale and complacent.
^ This really^ Music seems to need a kick up the arse every now and then - Elvis, Jimi Hendrix, punk, grunge etc. I hated it at the time - I was actually at college in Kings Road Chelsea in the mid 70s when it all kicked off. Saw a few bands in their early stages and just thought they were a bunch of talentless attention seekers. But now, looking back, it was probably the best thing that could have happened.

What influences your bass purchases?
Paul S replied to originalfunkbrother's topic in General Discussion
Of paramount importance to me are: Weight. 9lbs or less Neck width. 40mm or less Then - Active electrics or the possibility of adding a pre-amp Style (bought a T-Bird: felt and looked a complete tit wearing it) Colour - I can live with a lot of colours but have preferences. There are some colours I just couldn't live with. Value for money (rather than cost) Name on the headstock doesn't come into it. If all those work, I'll probably get it and thats when I find out if it is comfy or not. -
who cares ? its rock n roll and aint meant to be perfect. You could lways do it like this..
Yes. With just guitars and no keys, I think this is a good way to go. A bit pre-punk punk. Been trying to get my lot to try it like this - just didn't ever sound right the normnal way.

It isn't simply a treble/mids/bass cut/boost. And have a bump for the best sounding rock bass I have played or owned.
If coming in by train, and i assume that will be in to Fenchurch street, then you will be closest to the Tower of London part of town. Maybe plan from that area, heading out towards the eye as thats at the other end of the river walk, although the tube connections are good and its easy to get to the NHM etc from tower hill.
Indeed, yes. Basildon is on the c2c line into Fenchurch St (about 35mins) and c2c do lots of 'two-fers' for entrance fees, trips etc http://www.c2c-online.co.uk/offers/london/london_2for1
