Thanks, men! Another one on the list to try. I hope they don't all come up on eBay at once!
I bought some this week, as it happens. Taking on board that the KAM ones were better I bought a KAM set. But, typically, the wrong one. I got the KAM PartyBar. As opposed to the KAM ParBar. What's a 'TY' between friends? About £100 and a few lumens less, it seems ... anyway, they work. I'll need to wait until next gig (10th Dec) to see if they work well enough on their own. I suspect they will be good enough, though, for the pubs/small clubs I play in.
Yup, perfectly good enough for small spaces - bright enough, certainly. I left it on sound activation and simple changes of colour wash - worked a treat. Maybe tinker with the sensitivity a bit but otherwise quick to set up, plug in and play. My only gripe is the kettle lead isn't very long and dangles midair but that is easily sorted. Result.
Paypal didn't charge you at all? They only charge if you are in receipt - is that right?
PayPal charge at one end or the other but not both - something you can agree on with the seller as it can be altered either way during the transaction. In my case he agreed to pay the fee so added 4% to the purchase price to cover it.

Washburn Raven '78-81 - NOW SOLD

Thanks. Condition, given its age, isn't bad at all. A few knocks and lot of buckle rash but it is sound where it counts - these are superbly put together and I think for the money this is amazing. I was noodling about on it this afternoon and it just sounds ROCK. Not just generic overdriven humbucker - there is a rich creaminess behind there too when you roll off the tone a bit. When i first got it, had it set up and took it to band rehearsal, our guitarist had a go on it through his set up - unplugged his Les Paul Deluxe - and it held it's own! In his hands it played fantastically. Needs someone of that standard to own it, really. I know half a dozen licks and throw a few chords about for my own amusement but that's about it -

Another vote against hearing loss. I have to wear hearing aids as a matter of course as my hearing is shot to bits and also have tinnitus. Both were taking a steep nosedive before I got moulded earplugs. Neither has deteriorated further since I started wearing them - that's good enough for me! The problem is that they are expensive and you see nothing tangible for that expenditure - but it is not what you get, it is what you don't get, that makes them worth every single penny. Once your hearing is gone it doesn't come back - it is pretty final.

I've just bought something for the USA via Paypal and the seller said the charges were 4%. I'll take him at his word. I believe the credit card charges are variable and it entirely depends upon which one you have. if you have a Post Office credit card there is no handling fee or any extra charges involved for purchases - just a straight conversion from US to UK. You just need to make sure the exchange rate is ok. I always use that when I travel abroad (not cash withdrawals, though). There is a website called 'Money saving expert' that goes into this in some detail, as well as many other things. http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/

I don't know if I am reading this incorrectly but there seems to be an implication from some quarters that not using a back up bass entitles you to some sort of badge of merit - better to carry on through the rest of the gig using 3 strings, transposing on the fly, or restringing with your teeth. And that back up basses are for lesser mortals, somehow. I don't get it.

Feeler for now to see if I get a response. I bought this to have a 'matched pair' with my Washburn Scavenger bass, which I have now sold, and I don't really have any need for (yet) another 6 string guitar knocking about. A Washburn Raven guitar, made in Japan, Matsumoku factory between 1978 and 1981. This was the 'entry level' model for the Wing Series that included the Hawk, Falcon, Eagle, what have you. It is in pretty good nick for it's age and plays nicely - no particular issues that I am aware of. Build quality is excellent, as you would expect for a Matsumoku instrument. The high end models had a through neck that, I am told, were a little wobbly - this is bolt on and stable as anything. It sounds immense - somewhere in between a Gibson Les Paul and an SG, with a leaning towards the Les Paul. I think these look cool as anything. Here is a link to the Matsumoku info page on them, which tells you all the spec: http://www.matsumoku.../wing/wing.html Here are a couple of pics it would come with a hard case originally used for a Les Paul into which it fits nicely. I will be looking for[s] £175 incl. the case,[/s] just £135 including a soft gig bag, collected from Benfleet in Essex or couriered at cost. I broke a string last night at rehearsal. Everyone, including me, was amazed. I carry spare strings but it takes a little while to change. I am using the same bass tonight at a gig - if I'd have used a different bass last night the string would have broken during the gig. I'll take a spare from now on - I have a Hohner B2A that doesn't take up much real estate..

To be fair to Alex, he doesn't make the claims you mention, the hyperbole is user generated. That is presumably because they are good and people are happy with the product. If you choose not to join the love-in that's your choice but I don't see how you can criticise if you haven't (apparently?) tried one yourself.
Realistically if I was to say get the compact, would using it with the TE15 be ok? I'm just thinking about ££ Thanks again
I would imagine, but do not know, that a BF Compact would be fine on its own without the TE 1x15. With my old TE rig I had the choice of a 1x15, 2x10 and also a 1x18 - I used to mix and match depending on my mood, the gig and/or the state of my lumbar region. So far I have bought and used only a BF Compact and it has done everything I could ask of it - this with a TC Classic 450 head, not a Trace head. If money were no object I would add a BF Midget for just a tiny touch more top end, more headroom or, really, just to have a bigger looking pile of kit on stage. But, if I am honest with myself, that's just the GAS speaking as the Compact on its own is more than adequate for anything I need.

About 15 years ago I became ill with ME and I had a 8 or so year period of my life 'missing' whilst trying to deal with it. Fortunately for me it passed without leaving too great a legacy but it made me appreciate my life and what I have in a different way to before, knowing what a close scrape I'd had with a very different future. One of the things I decided to do, once I became well enough, was to buy a bass guitar - picking up the reigns I put down when I left university back in the late 70s. So, yes, for me a life changing event pushed me into music.

I think that's in East Tilbury, the posh bit.

What would be a typical 80s British metal/Rock bass?
Paul S replied to grimbeaver's topic in General Discussion
+1 for the Fender Power Jazz Special - I have one, generally play 70s and 80s classic rock, and it is the absolute business. P/J pups, active with mid-sweep, light-ish P body, beautiful skinny J neck. -
I used to use a Trace Elliot 1x15 and 2x10 and it was fantastic. Together they weighed around 50kg. I now use a Barefaced Compact and it is also fantastic - seems to cover the same tonal range as the old rig all by itself. It weighs around 12kg I think?

Thanks for your input, chaps. So they are pitching against the Epiphone EBO type range? That hadn't occurred to me but, looking again, it makes sense. My guess is that these would be a notch up in quality compared to the Epis and probably on a par with the Westones? I think the neck may be too wide - the Westone/Washburn 40mm wide necks are about as fat as I can get on with and these sound a little wider and perhaps a little thicker, too.
-
Been reading a little about these but can't find much hands on experience - I really like the styling. Does anyone have one - what are they like? Mainly - are they heavy and what neck size?! If they are heavy and have wide necks, are there any Aria Pro basses that are lightweight/skinny necked things? Ta.

Theres an 80s Ibanez SR800 in mint condition in the for sale section for under £300. If you can live with the colour (marmite) it has to be one of the better bargains to be had on here at the moment.

£300 to spend on backup bass - recommendations?
Paul S replied to citymariner's topic in Bass Guitars
Actually there is a seriously good bass for sale here at the moment - stretches your £300 a looooong way - a mint 80's Ibanez SR800: http://basschat.co.u..._1#entry1458653 If it were a different colour I'd have this on my rack already. Edit for ridiculous spelling mistake.
