Seems unlikely, doesn't it! When mine arrives I'll check out the serial number - it will most likely say made in Fujigen-gakki in 1989 or whatever. And guitarists in both bands have strats, so it should be easy to hold it next to and compare.

Just doing a bit of Googling about Fender Precision Lyte basses ('cos I have one arriving soon and I am getting all excited) and found This blog site here that has an entry commenting on an eBay listing for one. He says:
A future classic? Quite possibly. Great basses, very underrated. A lot of people don’t realise that Fender actually used Stratocaster bodies to make these basses, very slightly modified to take a bass neck, so strictly speaking they should have been called the Stratocaster Bass. It does make a big difference in terms of weight and therefore these are superb gigging basses as well as being ideal for those of a smaller build. We can’t all be Peter Hook. Made to a very high level of quality in the Matsumoko factory, the P-bass Lyte was made in relatively small numbers in the early days (1988-91 )but production did ramp up towards the end of its life, about 2001 as I recall. Various colours, including Fotoflame finishes but my favourite is the finish that this particular example is finished in namely Vintage Sunbust. £250 is a very good price too, I’ve seen these go for between £200 and £350 recently but would expect these to go north of £400 in a few years time.
Stratocaster body - really? Matsumoku factory - I didn't think any Fenders were made there? Anyone know the low down on these?

Here are some pics: There was a 'tug bar' fitted when I got it, I took it off and may even still have it - I'll chuck it in the bag. Currently fitted with rounds I also have a set of Status double ball end flats that I fitted for a little while (cost £18) that are almost brand new - used for maybe 10 hrs max - I can add them in for an extra £10. I would prefer bank transfer but will do PayPal if you cover fees.

I tried both recently, intending to buy the Orange. I wanted access to that overdriven valve sound and thought the Orange would do it better (and it was cheaper) but, for my ears, found the simulated tube drive on the TC stuff was better and the whole amp more flexible (ended up getting the Classic 450) - but it is all so subjective that you'd really do best to go have a listen to both somewhere.

I recently sold off most of my Trace Elliot gear due to increasing back problems. I had an AH300 head through 1x15" (or 1X18") and 2x10" cabs. 1x15" by itself for pubs/rehearsals etc. Also had an AH250 MkV head. More than loud enough for anything I did indoors or onstage at outdoor gigs as stage monitor. Tone was immense, especially the MkV - yum. I will soon have the remains of my Trace gear up for sale, with someone registering an interest at the moment - a 'proper' old vintage 1x18" cab and AH250 MkV head that has just been serviced and repaired at a TE approved service centre. 'Best amp they ever made' according to the guy there. As a pair - 66kg of tsunami inducing bassness.

Pics to follow, meanwhile some history. I had a B2A a couple of years back and sold it during a period when I was maintaining a 'one in, one out' policy. Obviously that didn't last very long and, as I regretted selling it, bought this on here by way of a replacement - the first one that came long - August last year. It is odd. The body and neck I am sure are genuine Hohner. The little foldaway leg rest is genuine. But, frankly, I am not sure about anything else. The bridge looks like the Steinberger system but isn't - it isn't stamped anywhere and the edges are not quite as rounded. A sort of cheap imitation, although it works perfectly well and keep totally in tune like these do. The electrics have been royally messed with at some point - just volume for each pickup and tone. The tone isn't the proper stacked 2 band eq, it is just a simple tone dial that works actively or passively. The pickups look like the proper ones but aren't - they work just fine but don't quite have that woody tone that these basses have. Currently the neck pup volume pot has a dead spot just below full. The preamp is not working properly and distorts heavily. Battery compartment lid is missing, so it is difficult to keep a battery in place anyway. It is generally a bit worn around the edges, dinks and bumps here and there. The input jack crackles a bit. It also has an input XLR socket but I have no idea if that works or not. All in all a mystery. But it plays just fine - decent straight neck, low action. I have gigged with it when my back has been bad - used passively it actually sounds fine, too. And it is as light as a feather - a shade under 6lbs according to my bathroom scales and lighter, in fact, than the 'proper' Hohner B2A replacement I have just bought. I can see this being used as a very cheap back-up bass where space and/or weight are an issue or a project - replace the electrics with an Artec SE-2A for example, and most of the issues with it are solved. I would have done this except I wanted the drop D bridge, which I now have. Looking for £70 including a cricket bat sized Warwick padded gig bag (£15 from Thomann) and £10 for postage. So £60 if you want to collect from Benfleet, Essex.

Bought a Hohner B2ABD from Graeme - bass was dispatched swiftly, arrived beautifully packed and was better than described. One of the easiest transactions I have had on here - a gent.

Just a quick note to add a happy ending. I bought a TC Electronics Classic 450 (4kg) a few weeks back - to replace my Trace Elliot AH300 (25kg) - which I have been sticking through my Trace Elliot 1818 cab (40kg). All the time thinking - I will be sad to see this big old fella go. Today I took delivery of a Barefaced Compact (12kg). My wife popped out for 30 mins just now so I had a quick noodle using my Fender Power Jazz Bass Special. Absolutely blown away. The clarity is simply unbelievable, from lows to highs, yet all the power is there too. I can hardly wait to use it in anger. This is no compromise, this is Nirvana. And 16kg VS 65kg!! Anyone else thinking they might want to make the change to lighweight gear I can only say - do not hesitate! There is a whole world below 20kg waiting to be explored.

1/ Yes. Green ones. A lot of the colour has come off where I the pick has abraded them but they are fine around the neck. Still look good from a distance... 2/ Yes. 3/ If it were mine I'd put on DR Black Beauties.

Got one coming in about 2 weeks! Can't wait.

TC Electronics Classic 450 does it for me.

Band #1 have used 'Rocks' as well for about the last year - just about to change to 'I Fought The Law'. Band #2, heavier covers - we always start with 'We Belong To The Night' by UFO (who used to open with it for a while).
tempted to hotrod my westone thunder with a u retro now...
Well worth doing. I put a P-Retro in my Washburn Scavenger - 'similar' to a Westone Thunder - together with a Kent Armstrong pup, and the improvement was beyond belief. Given the build quality and playability of the Scavenger (and so applicable to the Thunder, too), I now have an instrument as good as anything I have played.
-
Good call - it is unlikely you would get another one as good. As an aside I 'upgraded' mine - put slightly better pups in it (Kent Armstrong - a bit more growl and bite than the stock ones) and a J. East P-Retro and it has *totally* opened up and expanded the sound range. If it wasn't so bloody heavy I'd use it all the time.

Complete Trace Elliot rig - 8th April - SOLD!!
Paul S replied to Paul S's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
Yes, Geoff, 2x10 has gone. Ziggy here is their website. The deal is you take it in, then 2 weeks later ring up and say 'how are you getting on?' and then they start working on it. Anyway, I'll check in with Thornybank when I am ready and then let you know what the score is. I am soooo tempted to keep the head just, well, because. Depends what I get offered for it I suppose. I did a head to head play along with my TC Electronics head the other day when I got the AH250 back, both through the 18" and although the TC is extremely good it didn't quite have the magic. Still, my back will appreciate the 20+kg difference. -

I have. Still waiting until I get my Barefaced Compact before sticking it up on here again, which is going to be about a week and a half from now. I've also got an AH250 MkV head back from the menders so will have that available too. 'Best head they ever made' said the guy in the Trace Elliot authorised service centre in Southend.... not so many bells and whistles as some heads but the tone is just hmmmm I *think* Thornybank has already registered an interest in both but will check once I am ready to dispose of them. Certainly Essex is nearer than Scotland. -
I had mine for 2 years and never found the noise to be an issue - guitarists in both bands have much noisier pedal board.

Is a Squier Standard body any good..?
Paul S replied to matt-bass-sparkes's topic in Repairs and Technical
I would say that for what it costs to get new parts to do the upgrade you could buy a much better quality instrument than the bitza you would end up with. Westone Thunder/Spectrum, for example, would cost you less than £150 for a beauty. £150-£200 would get you a SGC Nanyo Bass Collecton - both would be far superior. Of course if the process of doing it up is part of the fun then go for it. -
Easy - my Fender Power Jazz Bass Special. Mid 80s MIJ heaven that makes me smile every time I play it. If I get to grab something with the other hand it would be the Washburn Scavenger to your left.
