1. Thanks for that. Is it worth checking the consumption of both units? I am thinking that it can't be too tricky and that mixing and matching stuff is perfectly ok as you can buy all these daisy chain leads for using many pedals together. Johnnyshredfreak is closed for summer hols - every topic on search came up with this link! Maybe I should wait until he is back up for business.
2. I am sure this is a simple question with a simple answer but I wouldn't know where to start looking other than Basschat! I have a Zoom B2.1u multi-effect pedal that I use with it's AC adapter - with an output of 9v DC 300mv. I have a Boss LS-2 line selector that I currently use with batteries, which seems daft, given that I have an AC adapter on the go for the Zoom unit. According to the manual it uses a PSA series AC Adapter - I have no idea what this means. I just plugged the Zoom adapter into the Boss unit, and it seems to work (in that the lights came on when I stomped on it). Is this adapter ok to use? Then, hooking the two up, the Boss unit has an AC output for daisy chaining and, again, the manual says it needs to be a PCS-20A power cable. I Googled this and it seems an 8 way lead is all you can get - can you get a double only? Ta.
3.
I have the Classic 450 and a Barefaced Compact.
I also have this set up as a replacement for a vintage Trace Elliot rig - the TC head came the closest to this TE sound of those I tried. In fact it surpassed it. I played the TC head through an old Trace 18" cab for a a while and thought 'this sounds pretty good - a decent replacement for the AH300 head'. Then the BF compact came along - suddenly a whole range of tones I wasn't getting before opened up, a clarity that was missing before.
4. Damn. I was after the black stacked ones - put an ad in the wanted section an all. If it falls through let me know.
5. Good stuff. A pretty good price, too - hope it is a good 'un. Although I have mixed feelings about this as I have now lost my dead-cert market, should I want to sell.
6. I agree. If I hadn't rushed out and bought the first one to come along I would have had yours, no question.
7. Bargain!
8. well......?
9. Good stuff - please do report back as I am very interested to hear how this works out.
10. I was playing at an all weekend festival last weekend (not Sonisphere) and one of the bands had a lefty bassist who used a right handed bass and, as Stingray Pete mentioned, was playing it strung as a right handed bass so the bottom E was at the bottom. That's the first time I have seen that in the flesh, had a quick double take when I noticed it. And he was singing. And they were pretty good, too.
11. Two spring to mind that haven't been mentioned and come well inside budget, leaving enough to hot up the pups/fir high mass bridge etc. Fender Jazz Bass Special or Power Jazz Bass Special - 38mm necks, precision bodies, PJ pups. My Power Jazz Bass Special had been fitted with Seymour Duncans at some stage, now sporting a Gotoh bridge and Hipshot detuner and is a superlative instrument. Fender Precision Lyte, although the body is smaller (like a strat) is is P-Bass shaped. Stock pups and bridge are actually fine.
12. Interesting. If you stripped a body could you use this to stain it black? A bit 1970s MFI flat pack perhaps.
13. No pg on these, so it is routing out at the back. I'm picking it up on Sunday, so will live with it for a while and see if it is one I will want to pick up a lot. If so I might even take the P-Retro out of my Scavenger, which I don't use much as it is too heavy. Thanks all.
14. I also think it is a very good price. I recently paid £300 for one that needed a lot of the electrics sorting out and had been badly refinished - and thought I did ok. This is a real bargain by comparison. A shade over 7lbs of Fender goodness!
15. Ah, that'll probably be my course of action then. Thanks. Well, when I say 'my' course of action I mean the guy who does my repairs etc 'cos I am hopeless at that kind of stuff. Is routing out for a battery compartment difficult, do you know?
16. As per title, really. I am picking up a Westone Thunder Jet soon (after having recently had one but sold it - long story) which I will probably be pimping a bit. Arguably the best option would be J-East P-Retro but that might be a tad too dear for the project (bass is costing under £80, although it should be good quality) Maybe the guts out of it's cousin, a Thunder 1A, but I'd need to be lucky to find a breaker. Are there any other simple (and relatively inexpensive) onboard preamps out there for single pups? I had an Artec SE-2 fitted into a bass and it worked a treat but they don't seem to do a single pup version - could a kit like that be adapted for just one pup? Or an active pup rather than a preamp? Never played a bass with these - how does it compare? Thanks!
17. I moved to bass from guitar (with a gap of 25 years in the middle, admittedly), both of which I play with a pick. I struggle to play finger style with the same precision, speed and subtlety as I do with a pick, so stick 100% to that. I sometimes think it would be nice to use both and practice finger style quite a bit but have yet to achieve anything useable for anything but the simplest lines.
18. There is a discussion forum dedicated to those who enjoy Shergold guitars. To say they were hapless efforts by UK makers is exceedingly unfair, IMO. I had it's first cousin for a while - a Hayman 4040. Built like a tank, around the same weight, with a neck like a floorboard. Beautifully built instrument, mind you.
19. I don't know if this is of any use whatsoever but I have recently replaced a Trace Elliot rig - any combination of AH-300 head played through a TE 1x15, 2x10,1x18 or, latterly, an AH-250 MkV head. Anyway I now have a TC Electronics Classic 450 and BF Compact and it every bit as loud (not had the master beyond 4 yet and I play with a loud heavy rock covers outfit) with more clarity.
20.
I know! "Oh, is there a band behind me? I'm just carrying out my duty here y'all...
Er, that's exactly what he IS doing. Little point there being a cop there if he is going to turn away from the crowd (who he should be watching) and start getting on down. Not sure about the hat, mind you.
21. What they said - whatever minor frustrations there may be getting in contact with Alex the product is so good it is not even worth considering as an issue. quick edit - mine took 8 weeks - problems with plywood etc delayed it by a month.
22. I have a zoom multi-effect unit and also find it confusing. I couldn't get on with the manual as although it seemed to be in English I didn't understand a word of it. But, for the zoom pedal at least, there is a site somewhere on the interweb where people have uploaded various patches with instructions on how to program the various settings to reproduce those patches. I found one that works for me that does a passable Muse 'Hysteria' sound (especially when wet blended) without having a whole bank of individual pedals - so I think that these multi-effect thingies can be useful. I also found that by following the instructions on these patches I was able to get more of an ear as to how the different parameters changed the sound and reckon that if I spent a few hours entering in some of these patches and listening to how they work I would feel confident enough to change things to my exact requirements. I just haven't got around to it yet. Maybe worth trying it from that angle, rather than getting frustrated with the manual as I was. I am sure there must be a Boss equivalent somewhere.
23.
I'd want more and better photos first. Also, confirmation of whether or not this bass is active. If it's active then it's an SB310 and you can do better than £199. If it's passive then it's an SB301 and you can do a lot better than £199. You might also want to know why the neck (P) pickup has been swopped out for an EMG but the bridge (J) pickup has not. One of the joys of the early Bass Collections is the P-type tone they can deliver, and this example may not be able to do that. On the positive side, you won't be disappointed by the weight or the balance, and the playability of a properly-setup Bass Collection really is second to none.
^^ what Jack said. Especially the last paragraph - it is the most comfortable and playable bass I own. I wasn't happy with the stock pre-amp on mine, changed it to an Artec SE-2 and, for such a cheap up-grade, couldn't be more pleased with the results. Great bass.

25. Heres' mine - '85-87 Power Jazz Special. I love it. It had Seymour Duncan Basslines in it when I bought it and since taking the pics I have added a Gotoh bridge and a Hipshot D-tuner.
