1. I'll consider offers on these - again, I can only say no
2. There's both a Little Mark Tube 500 and a Barefaced Compact just popped up on the For Sale section - this has to be the best VFM lightweight rig ever!
3. I picked this up recently unseen - a red '90-91 Fender Precision Lyte. Sold by a daughter whose bass playing father had recently died. I paid a reasonable price for it - £300 - but must admit I was disappointed to see the condition of the bodywork as it has been badly refinished at some point in it's life, although the colour is right I think. A few little other minor issues - jack socket and 1 pot need replacing, clean and set up mainly. But so far as I can tell from bedroom levels it sounds great and plays fantastically well - superb neck. And really lightweight and comfy. In fact everything it said on the tin, really. What would you do with it if it were yours? I am *really* undecided. The paint is so bad that I look at it and think 'I could do much better myself' and am tempted to have a bash - especially after reading a lot of the refin threads on here by novices. In which case I would probably want to paint it black (I know, not an easy colour to paint but anything would be better than it is now). The major issue with a re-fin is the headstock decal has all the info on it - serial number etc. Is it too cheeky to get this reproduced? I guess not and maybe this way wouldn't completely devalue the bass. My inclination is to completely stealth it, change all the hardware to black Gotoh - I would prefer the look of it but imagine also it would devalue it considerably, especially if I did away with the original style of headstock decal. But does that, in fact, matter? Or should I just leave thing alone, get used to the paint finish and stop being so shallow? It doesn't affect the playability, after all, and is a part of the basses history. Be really interested to read different points of view and tips.
4. Long shot - I would also consider some trades (not amps/cabs though). For example - a decent wireless kit 5 string SGC Nanyo SB-310 or similar lightweight 5-er. Doesn't hurt to ask, I can only say no.
5. The only thing I would recommend here is a word of caution to try before you buy if at all possible. From a cold start and no preconceptions I tried all of the available gear in my budget range, hoping to spend as little as possible. I dismissed the Promethean as soon as I played it as, to me, it just didn't sound right. That's not to say it won't be right for you - there are a lot of endorsees on here for it, after all - and if it does you would have saved yourself a pile of dosh. But what it offers on paper and in reality might not match your expectations. It didn't mine.
6. I recently 'downsized' from a monster vintage Trace Elliot rig to a Barefaced Compact teamed with a TC Electronics Classic 450. I haven't gigged this set up yet but rehearsed with both bands (but both rehearse at gig volumes, for some reason) and reckon it is easily powerful enough for any situation I am likely to encounter - small pub, large hall or on-stage monitoring for outdoors. And talk about portable - the cab in particular is just phenomenal - as well as the actual output the clarity and range of tone is simply unbelievable. Alex is a genius. He says in the blurb on the website that it sounds more like a 2 x 12 than a 1x15 and it does - but is not lacking in the bottom at all. Just having one set up for room practice/rehearsal/gigging really isn't going to be a problem - one head, one cab - not really very time consuming.
7. Shameless plug - selling my MkV AH-250 together with an 18" cab for next to nothing. If vintage Trace gear is your thing this is worth considering. Link here
8. I am up and running with my new lightweight rig so the remains of my old vintage Trace Elliot gear has to go - both head and cab are probably at least 25 years old - maybe someone who knows can chip in here? Firstly my Trace Elliot AH250 GP11 mk V head. If you know about these skip the next paragraph. Size-wise 53 x 42 x 18cm and a lumbar wrenching 22kg. I bought this about 6 months ago on Basschat for £250 - wasn't able to use it much because of my back issues. I've just spent £96 on getting it fixed and serviced at a Trace Elliot approved service centre, so it is ready to rock. The guy in the repairers reckons this is the best head Trace Elliot made, so who am I to argue? No real issues - the sliders on the EQ have had non-standard knobs glued on, which makes access to the back tricky. not a problem for me, I can assure you. One of the rubber feet is missing from the end, so when you stand it up up end it leans a bit. Pretty good nick, tolex is used but not abused - not perfect but it *is* old. Sounds immense and tone is, er, more than immense - plug in, switch on, engage the pre-shape and you will rule will world. If that wasn't enough it lights up prettily from the UV bulb, too! 'El Gordo' the leviathan Trace Elliot 1x18 cabinet - 61 x 79 x 43cm and approx 40kg. This beast is rather tatty but works perfectly well - I paid £220 for it from PMT in Southend some time last year. Perfect for old school rock or anyone starting a hobby in siesmology. I had intended to buy a can of satin black, take all the metal bits off and give him a makeover - the tolex isn't too bad - but, well, won't bother now. On 4 casters, 2 are lockable. Actually seems to have a broader range than the Trace 1X15 cab I had - seems to register the highs a little better for some reason. The two together are a match made in Rock Heaven - simply sublime. Hard to better IMO - my new rig is just as loud and sounds just as good but it somehow doesn't quite melt the heart the way this stuff does. Still, needs must and I have move on. Ideally I'd like to sell them as a pair, in which case I am after a ridiculously cheap £300 including a kettle lead and jack-jack lead. That's 1 x Trace Elliot Watt per pound sterling. Sold separately I would want £250 for the head and £100 for the cab. Because of the weight and size the logistics of sending this via courier would be complicated and expensive so collection only from Benfleet in Essex or I can deliver for the cost of the diesel. Cash on receipt.
9. Quite like the look of this Westone Spectrum ST bass that has just been listed. Looks good in white with a black headstock. I reckon it will go for next to nothing.
10. You know I am 99.9% certain I read the Fender website spec a while back and it said a P-Bass width neck. Could they have changed it? I have a pearl white PJBS and it makes me warm inside every time I pick it up. Love at first sight and I love it more each time I play it. The sound is just soooo.....
11. Greens on my Bass Collection. Particularly cool (or a pathetic affectation, depending on your viewpoint) when I had UV Trace Elliot head. Going to stick some Black Beauties on it soon as I prefer them.
12. Seems unlikely, doesn't it! When mine arrives I'll check out the serial number - it will most likely say made in Fujigen-gakki in 1989 or whatever. And guitarists in both bands have strats, so it should be easy to hold it next to and compare.
13. Just doing a bit of Googling about Fender Precision Lyte basses ('cos I have one arriving soon and I am getting all excited) and found This blog site here that has an entry commenting on an eBay listing for one. He says:
A future classic? Quite possibly. Great basses, very underrated. A lot of people don’t realise that Fender actually used Stratocaster bodies to make these basses, very slightly modified to take a bass neck, so strictly speaking they should have been called the Stratocaster Bass. It does make a big difference in terms of weight and therefore these are superb gigging basses as well as being ideal for those of a smaller build. We can’t all be Peter Hook. Made to a very high level of quality in the Matsumoko factory, the P-bass Lyte was made in relatively small numbers in the early days (1988-91 )but production did ramp up towards the end of its life, about 2001 as I recall. Various colours, including Fotoflame finishes but my favourite is the finish that this particular example is finished in namely Vintage Sunbust. £250 is a very good price too, I’ve seen these go for between £200 and £350 recently but would expect these to go north of £400 in a few years time.
Stratocaster body - really? Matsumoku factory - I didn't think any Fenders were made there? Anyone know the low down on these?
14. Bargainaceous bump. This is an absolute steal for £100 and for anyone with back issues this has to be the fretless of choice. I wish I had use for a fretless, this is such a good deal!
15. Mike bought my odd Hohner cricket bat - a delight to deal with. Cheers Mike.
16. Sold pending the usual!
17. Sort of on hold.
18. Here are some pics: There was a 'tug bar' fitted when I got it, I took it off and may even still have it - I'll chuck it in the bag. Currently fitted with rounds I also have a set of Status double ball end flats that I fitted for a little while (cost £18) that are almost brand new - used for maybe 10 hrs max - I can add them in for an extra £10. I would prefer bank transfer but will do PayPal if you cover fees.
19. I tried both recently, intending to buy the Orange. I wanted access to that overdriven valve sound and thought the Orange would do it better (and it was cheaper) but, for my ears, found the simulated tube drive on the TC stuff was better and the whole amp more flexible (ended up getting the Classic 450) - but it is all so subjective that you'd really do best to go have a listen to both somewhere.
20. I recently sold off most of my Trace Elliot gear due to increasing back problems. I had an AH300 head through 1x15" (or 1X18") and 2x10" cabs. 1x15" by itself for pubs/rehearsals etc. Also had an AH250 MkV head. More than loud enough for anything I did indoors or onstage at outdoor gigs as stage monitor. Tone was immense, especially the MkV - yum. I will soon have the remains of my Trace gear up for sale, with someone registering an interest at the moment - a 'proper' old vintage 1x18" cab and AH250 MkV head that has just been serviced and repaired at a TE approved service centre. 'Best amp they ever made' according to the guy there. As a pair - 66kg of tsunami inducing bassness.
21. And replied. Pics soon. I've been told that early models didn't have 'Licensed by Steinberger' stamped on the bridge, which would explain that and makes it more likely that is is a genuine one that has just had the guts fiddled with, presumably when the pre-amp bust.
22. Pics to follow, meanwhile some history. I had a B2A a couple of years back and sold it during a period when I was maintaining a 'one in, one out' policy. Obviously that didn't last very long and, as I regretted selling it, bought this on here by way of a replacement - the first one that came long - August last year. It is odd. The body and neck I am sure are genuine Hohner. The little foldaway leg rest is genuine. But, frankly, I am not sure about anything else. The bridge looks like the Steinberger system but isn't - it isn't stamped anywhere and the edges are not quite as rounded. A sort of cheap imitation, although it works perfectly well and keep totally in tune like these do. The electrics have been royally messed with at some point - just volume for each pickup and tone. The tone isn't the proper stacked 2 band eq, it is just a simple tone dial that works actively or passively. The pickups look like the proper ones but aren't - they work just fine but don't quite have that woody tone that these basses have. Currently the neck pup volume pot has a dead spot just below full. The preamp is not working properly and distorts heavily. Battery compartment lid is missing, so it is difficult to keep a battery in place anyway. It is generally a bit worn around the edges, dinks and bumps here and there. The input jack crackles a bit. It also has an input XLR socket but I have no idea if that works or not. All in all a mystery. But it plays just fine - decent straight neck, low action. I have gigged with it when my back has been bad - used passively it actually sounds fine, too. And it is as light as a feather - a shade under 6lbs according to my bathroom scales and lighter, in fact, than the 'proper' Hohner B2A replacement I have just bought. I can see this being used as a very cheap back-up bass where space and/or weight are an issue or a project - replace the electrics with an Artec SE-2A for example, and most of the issues with it are solved. I would have done this except I wanted the drop D bridge, which I now have. Looking for £70 including a cricket bat sized Warwick padded gig bag (£15 from Thomann) and £10 for postage. So £60 if you want to collect from Benfleet, Essex.
23. Bought a Hohner B2ABD from Graeme - bass was dispatched swiftly, arrived beautifully packed and was better than described. One of the easiest transactions I have had on here - a gent.
24. Just a quick note to add a happy ending. I bought a TC Electronics Classic 450 (4kg) a few weeks back - to replace my Trace Elliot AH300 (25kg) - which I have been sticking through my Trace Elliot 1818 cab (40kg). All the time thinking - I will be sad to see this big old fella go. Today I took delivery of a Barefaced Compact (12kg). My wife popped out for 30 mins just now so I had a quick noodle using my Fender Power Jazz Bass Special. Absolutely blown away. The clarity is simply unbelievable, from lows to highs, yet all the power is there too. I can hardly wait to use it in anger. This is no compromise, this is Nirvana. And 16kg VS 65kg!! Anyone else thinking they might want to make the change to lighweight gear I can only say - do not hesitate! There is a whole world below 20kg waiting to be explored.
25. 1/ Yes. Green ones. A lot of the colour has come off where I the pick has abraded them but they are fine around the neck. Still look good from a distance... 2/ Yes. 3/ If it were mine I'd put on DR Black Beauties.
