A lot of suggestions here, thanks all. I tried an Orange Terror Bass at PMT today (also a new lightweight Ampeg thingy, which didn't do it for me at all). I thought the Orange was very nice but the gain seemed too easy to overdo with my Fender Power Jazz Special - beyond about 2 o'clock it seemed a bit farty. Rolled off to about half it was lovely, though. I'm off to Bass Merchant tomorrow to have a go on whatever they have in stock - Promethean, Genz benz, TC Classic 450, Markbass.

I [s]am thinking of[/s] selling my Fender Jaguar. I use either my Power Jazz Special or the Bass Collection more at the moment and, frankly, could do with releasing some cash to help fund some lightweight amp/cabs that I need to get. Had it from new for a couple of years. I replaced the original creamy white scratchplate with this black one - looks sexier IMO and the bass is now called 'The Panther'. But I still have, and will include, the original. It has only tiny marks on it, nothing much. a little buckle rash at the back - the scratch plate has pick marks on it - they might even polish out, I don't know. One thing I never got around to doing was sorting out the slight hum these jags have when you take your hand off the metal. It is what they do and easily fixed, I am told - I just never did. Currently it has no strings on it - I took off a set of Thomastik flats which I can put back on, or send it stringless for you do use what you like. I won't list all the doings - active, 2 band eq, 2 pups that can be switched series or parallel. Can also be played passive. Beautiful skinny and thin Jazz profile neck - I think it is similar to the Geddy Lee one - with block inlays. Etc etc. A vast array of sounds available. I believe they don't make these any more. Anyway - I am thinking £500, including one of those SKB soft/hard cases but excluding postage extra. Any interest out there? Complete Trace Elliot rig - 8th April - SOLD!!
Paul S replied to Paul S's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
Ok, some details and pics.. The whole rig, with covers, without covers, stacked the other way if you prefer.. The head - AH300-12 - (wxhxd) 49 x 15 x 37cm and approx. 15kg The 2x10 (2103H) cab - 49 x 63 x 43cm and approx 31kg (and it is with an adjustable tweeter) The 1x15 (1053T) cab - 49 x 63 x 43cm and approx 26kg The ultra-rare footswitch (as you can see, pretty much as new), monster OBBM speaker cables, kettle lead and head manual. And 'El Gordo' the leviathan 1x18 cabinet I didn't mention yesterday - 61 x 79 x 43cm and approx 40kg. This beast is rather tatty but works perfectly well. I had intended to buy a can of satin black, take all the metal bits off and give him a makeover - the tolex isn't too bad - but, well, won't bother now. On 4 casters, 2 are lockable I'd like £120 for this and am reluctant to sell this to anyone leaving by the sea in case it sets off a tsunami. The marks on the fronts of the cabs are reflections from stuff around, not marks. Well, except for El Gordo. The cabs have one or two small tears in the tolex but nothing much. At the back side of the cabs the edges are just starting to lift a fraction - nothing much. And even though the sizes don't seem to match they do stack - it is the little rubber feet that make some measurements different. Edit for price revision - I will sell separately or bundle into a 'deal' AH300-12, with cover and kettle lead - £250 1153T, with cover and cable - £150 2013H, with cover and cable - £150 1818 - £120 Footswitch - £50 Head + 1153 +2013 +footswitch + cables etc £550 Head + (1153 or 2013) + 1818 + cables etc + footswitch £520 Remove footswitch less £50. Whole lot £650. -
Yes, I do it too. Even though I only occasionally do BVs I end up hoarse after every gig and rehearsal because I sing everything I do, often tunelessly (hopefuly not the BVs), and have to steer clear of the mike.

Another faker here. If you got away with it for 12 yrs without anyone spotting it you must be good ok.

Got to go lightweight, so this needs to be gone. A complete ball busting, wall trembling, floor vibrating Trace Elliot matching rig. According to the guy I bought it from, who had been a Trace Elliot devotee for many years, this was almost the last bit of kit that left the factory before production was taken over by Gibson. It is all covered in the 'leather effect' tolex, rather than the pimply one or carpet, with metal corners and sprung handles on the cabs. With both cabs it is 300 Trace Elliot Watts of power, which has proved to be more than loud enough for any situation I have gigged in so far. It is all in pretty good nick considering the age, which I guess must be 13 or so years old. Ah300-12 head - no UV light but luminous finish gives the trade mark green glow when in operation. A huge array of knobs, bells and whistles are at your disposal. There are 2 inputs - passive and active. There is an Input gain control which, er, controls the gain on the input. There is a handy 3 light system for setting this - green is low, yellow is fine, red is overdoing it. It has the GP-12 band EQ, operated by sliders and activated via a push/push button. It has the famous 'Trace Elliot Pre-shape', which overides the EQ and gives the 'trade mark Trace Elliot Sound'. It is the setting I use when playing in my 2 rock bands. Also activated via a push/push button. It has a Harmonic emphasis push/push button that is varied via a knob. I don't use this. It has Valve Stage activated by a push/push button and adjusted via a knob. This gives a degree of valve 'warmth' to the sound right up to a fairly strong overdriven sound. I like this. Lots. There is a 2-band compressor with a blend knob. I have it set up more as a boost because I don't really understand what it does, despite Simon's best efforts at explaining it at the last bass bash. There is a noise reduction push/push button that eliminates hum and hiss, especially if using it with the highs boosted. There is a mute/tune push/push button - this mutes the connection to the speaker(?) but if connected to a tuner the signal is still available. So that's the front gubbins. On the back there is the power socket and on/off switch. 5-way DIN socket for the 5-way footswitch and a jack socket for a mute footswitch. There are two jack inputs for effects loop, which is switchable parallel/series, with a blend knob. This is EXTREMELY useful and eliminates the need for all sorts of line boxes. There are two jack sockets for line out and tuner. Balanced XLR output for Di, which is switchable pre/post eq. 2 x jack sockets for speakers - min load 4ohms. I recently bought for this a slightly second hand New Old Stock 5 way footswitch, which controls pre-shap, EQ, Valve drive, compression and effects. It really makes using these buttons SO much easier. This arrived wrapped in dried Unicorn placenta and packed out with hens teeth and rocking horse poo. 1153 cab - 15" 2 x jack socket or, strangely (?) XLR rather than Speakon. 2103H - 2 x 10". again, jacks or XLRs. I think this is the one with a switchable tweeter but will check. I would rather sell this as a complete rig, with monster OBBM cables for the speakers and kettle lead. Head has it's original cover, I had Roqsolid covers made for the cabs in black with green piping. [s]£600 for the lot, collection from Benfleet in Essex, SS71LD or meet half way for fuel. This is a huge amount of kit for the money but I need it going and so have priced it to sell. *now with 1x18 cab added - £120[/s] Price revision - I will sell separately or bundle into a 'deal' AH300-12, with cover and kettle lead - £250 1153T, with cover and cable - £150 2013H, with cover and cable - £150 1818 - £120 Footswitch - £50 Head + 1153 +2013 +footswitch + cables etc £550 Head + (1153 or 2013) + 1818 + cables etc + footswitch £520 Remove footswitch less £50. Whole lot £650. I will take some pictures tomorrow and add weights and dimensions but here are a couple of long range shots of it in use last summer (captions welcomed for pic1....) I play a mix of small pubs to open air stuff where the rig is just for stage monitoring and have found my 300w Trace Elliot head to be more than adequate even if just using one cab - so effectively about 220W on tap? Never had to turn up the volume beyond 2 o'clock. Shameless plug - I will be selling this lot soon for not a lot of money. AH300-12 head (with footswitch!!!) 1x15 cab, 2x10 cab. The very last of the pre-Gibson stuff to come out of the factory and in very good nick, all with covers... I'm thinking probably £600 all in, with all cables.

I must say than I am totally heartened by all the 'there is life after Trace' type comments. Makes me look forward to trying all this new stuff rather than keep regretting having to change. Thank you Basschatters!!

Ta. I definitely need to go try some out.
Not looking to re-start old arguments from old topics, but the only way (IMHO) that you'll ever know how a rig sounds when you gig it with your own band is ... erm ... to gig it with your own band......
I've certainly found this to be the case with everything else I've had - only by living with it for a while do you get to appreciate it's nuances. The Canvey bass Bash is just around the corner, in terms of time and geographically, so maybe I should make the effort to pop in before I have to go for my gig in the afternoon as I believe there will be some TC gear there at least.
I've finally arrived at 2 x Barefaced 1x15 Compacts and a Markbass LittleMark 800 tube rig. Face-meltingly good for classic rock, weighs about the same as a hummingbird and fits in the boot of my car
Interesting - I haven't read about this - does the LM tube do something similar to the Trace Elliot 'Valve Drive' thingy where you can overdrive it? Thanks Clarky. I've pm'd Alex so let's see what he says.

Ta. Was that about 6 weeks ago?

Some good advice here - cheers. I think separates rather than a combo, too. I can see a shape forming out of the mist.... nothing like sitting down with some rational input to help focus what I want to do If I am going to get some lightweight gear I may as well go the whole hog - the Eden Nemesis probably doesn't weigh much less than the Trace Elliot 1x15 so I wouldn't be gaining much. The Barefaced Compact does seem like a good solution for a cab. Much of a waiting list, Clarky? For the head, well, I'll aim for a lightweight one for everyday use. Orange Terror or TC, probably. Liking what I read of the TC Electronic Classic 450 - it doesn't seem very complicated, which is appealing to a simple chap like me. I'll probably keep the Trace Elliot AH250 for old times sake - I'll get next to nothing for it anyway and it is *so* nice.

Move on... yes, I know. It is such a shame, though. Finding the sound that 'works' is an expensive and time consuming business and I am fairly daunted by the prospect of having to start again. Colchester is only an hour up the road and a day spent at Bass Merchant might be a plan. Then again I've never got a decent feel for sound when playing in shops - is the Bass Merchant much different? - but for sure I'd get and idea hands on for the portability. But knowing where to start! Barefaced cabs - I am on the list for the roadshow but I suspect that will be too late. Probably need to ditch a couple of heavier basses, too.

So, having had a serious chat with my physiotherapist, my wife (wh0 helps me in and out of the car with the gear) and with a smaller car on the way, I am reluctantly going to have to trade in my beloved Trace Elliot gear for something lightweight and more compact. My ideal bass Nirvana is currently from the AH250 GP11 mk V played through an 18" cab with a 2x10 when the mood takes me. Not the lightest of rigs I play in classic rock bands x2, both with loud drummers and 2 x guitarists, and I usually have the volume set just over half on the Trace head. Is there anything out there that is likely to sound similar? I am guessing TC Electronics - either the classic 450 or RH 450? - or Orange Terror Bass for the amp, but what cabs? I wouldn't begin to know. Or would a Promethean cut the mustard?

it's amazing what a little squirt can do....
-
For me it helps to have a bit more flex for faster picking, so I have Jim Dunlop 1mm black nylon for general use, switching to .73mm grey nylon for faster playing when I need to. Which is only a couple of tracks (Lights Out, UFO and Ace of Spades).

I was in the Sue Ryder shop in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, today and they have a pale blue one in stock - just thought it might be worth mentioning?

Nice one. My experience of the Portuguese is that they are an extremely friendly nation. A tip - when filling your hire car at a petrol station where you've just encountered the one person in the whole country who doesn't speak English, 'Gasoleo' in Portuguese means 'diesel', not 'Gasoline'. Seems perfectly logical now - gas oil, gas-oleo...

I'm 53 and was going to say something poignant but now can't remember.

Would you need to be flush to afford one?

Indeed - no frills but hugely enjoyable fun to play - I guess the majority of Basschatters are doing something similar. That is the first time I have ever recorded anything like that using proper kit and I was impressed at how it came out. The guy who did it has actually remixed it as he wasn't pleased with the first version, so I think I will upload the newer version once I get hold f a copy. Edit - re-mixed version now on the site here.

The heavier classic rock band I play in, Xerocks, finally got around to getting 5 tracks recorded. Submitted here to satiate curiosity and I'd also welcome comments. Here is Rockin' in the Free World - the others are linked over to the right of the page. We did this 'as live' with any BVs done afterwards and re-starts as necessary for cockups - not too many, as it happens. I think it turned out pretty well if a little heavy on the bass, maybe the vocal is out front a bit too much. Still, as it is only intended to dish out to pub landlords who will, at most, listen to the first 20 seconds of each track, I don't suppose it matters too greatly. Disclaimer - I don't play anything flashy, just what is required. Or slightly less, if I can get away with it... Please be gentle...
