1. I haven't tried the whole range of pups but upgraded the stock split coil p-style pickup in my Washburn Scavenger with a Kent Armstrong one and am really pleased with the improved tone. Plus I have fitted a P-retro, which does even more incredible things to it, but the improvement on passive is noticeable. The bonus is that they are £30, too.
2. Thanks for that Lawrence - it doesn't surprise me that the P-Lyte isn't much of an improvement - if at all. I am certainly enjoying the Bass Collection a lot. Just out of curiosity what did you do to upgrade the electrics? Mine is (I think) the B-310, so not the high end of the spectrum.
3. I recently bought an SGC Nanyo Bass Collection and have found it exceptionally comfortable to wear and play. More so than any of my other basses. Strangely, given that the rest of the band rarely notice anything, they all commented on how cool it looks (black with green DR Neons - just proves they have eyes, I suppose... ) but also how good it sounds. I have had slight GAS for a Fender P-Lyte bass for a while now but, on paper at least, they seem to tick many of the same boxes in that they are lightweight, skinny neck, P/J pup configuration, MIJ and decent quality. But the SGC Nanyo cost me probably half what P-Lyte would have. Has anyone owned or played both to give a comparison?
4. I imagine you'll be inundated by endorsees of the P-Retro. It ticks all your boxes. I fitted one to a Washburn Scavenger and it has brought it alive - I never thought it would be possible to get such a huge range of useable tones from such a simple single split coil pickup. Plus you can get back to passive and everything you had before at the pull of a switch. I don't suppose it is the cheapest option but, from my limited experience, it is worth every penny.
5. Yes. I pay to rehearse, and rehearse in order to play live in front of people. So if I get to play live in front of people it cuts out the middle bit where I have to pay. If you see what I mean. Unpaid rehearsal, except better, if you like. Money, when it comes, just goes into a rehearsal/other band costs fund.
6. On top of the amp.
7. Without wishing to hijack this thread (ok, consider it hijacked) - how does the P Lyte compare to other lightweight/skinny necked/P&J basses like, say, SGC Nanyo Bass Collection or even Yamaha?
8.
What a shame Stretch, was hopeing to catch up with you chat about the good old days
Methinks you have confused me with someone else, good sir. I don't believe we have old times to chat about, good or otherwise Always happy to talk about the new times, though - but not on 10th April.
9. From the 'seeing in the dark' side of it, rather than the 'looking cool' aspect - does a dab of glow in the dark paint over the dot markers work ok? Seems like an easy (and cheap) solution.
10. Just realised this clashes with a gig - Rock for Haven's Sake is on the same day. Although my lot aren't playing until later in the afternoon I am planning on going all day with some family. Bugger.
11. Yup, demand a refund. Or, better still, I'll give you £10 for it and save you the hassle.
12.
Westone Thunder 1-A, Limited Edition, hand-crafted from solid gold and lacquered with angels' tears. Presumably. J
I had no idea they were worth so much. I'd better get mine on eBay smartish - it is older, more vintage, AND with an original branded Westone fitted hard case so I guess worth even more! What do you think a reasonable start bid would be - £500? BIN £750, or is that limiting the ceiling price?
13. Tom - changing from flats to rounds will make all the difference on that bass - it was strung with rounds when I got it and I changed it to those D'addarios because I wanted the sound to be 'flatter'. Also consider a set of hotter pups - I stuck some Kent Armstrongs into my Washburn and they made a difference - half the cost of Seymour Duncans. It is what I would have done, had I kept it. I do kind of miss it - that stealth look is really cool - but have way too many.
14. I have an 1818 and it is like a portable earthquake. Castors are your friend.
15. The newer band I play in - Xerocks - are playing, as per title, at the Haystack on Canvey Island this coming Saturday. If you aren't doing anything, don't live far, like Deep Purple, Thin lizzy, Black Sabbath, UFO et al then do pop long and say Hi. Also playing the Golden Fleece in Chelmsford on 26th Feb. We are just getting out there and could do with a bit of support!
16. And another bump. I have just bought one on these and I reckon this is the best value for money you would ever get in this price range. Secondhand Squier or this? No contest. The neck is just supreme - easily as good as my brace of MIJ Fenders and it is as light as a feather to wear.
17. PM re Boss LS-2 Edit - Mine now!
18. There is a Squier Silver Series p-bass just popped up in the classifieds here for £200 - link - seems a very good price.
19. I had one of these as my 'starter' bass. It was lightweight, well balanced and, considering how much it cost, had a superb neck - really skinny and fast. The sound was weak but easily beefed up with a pedal. Not the best bass in the world but as a back up perfectly ok. I wish I had kept mine TBH and pimped it. They don't go for much but £20 is a steal.
20. Nice to see it is a BIN...
21. Gotta be worth £400 of anyone's money, I reckon - be interesting to see how it goes. There's a red one on the bay somewhere too, but I think the white ones are better. Not just because I've got one, either....
22. Depends entirely on the type of music you play. Singer/frontman got my vote but I'd say that specifically for a good old fashioned heavy rock band a guitarist that can cut the mustard is probably more important.
23. +1 - huge fan here. The only thing lead about these is the weight - heavy things - but they are monster sounding basses and superbly built - difficult to know of better value for money IMO.
24. Also, having had to miss last weekend, I think I'd be up for this. Only 1hr 15mins away. No makeup though. That's Friday nights.... what is the venue like?
25. There is a sexy white Fender Jazz Bass Special on ebay at the moment - link here - mid 80s MIJ. It was these I believe the Duff McCagan sig. series are based on? Looks like a good one too. These have Jazz necks.
