I've seen some of these 70s USA Mustangs come in at nearly 10lbs before now, despite the smaller size etc. Which for some folks isn't heavy, I know, but a deal breaker for me. I have two Precisions - a JV Squier and a 70s Antoria - that are 8lbs and that is enough for me to handle.
-
I'll regroup on Sunday, once I know the weight of this one. A part of me will be disappointed if it is a heavy one, but another part of me will be glad not to shell out £1800 unexpectedly.

I've heard back from the guy, he is away at the moment (gigging, I think) and will weigh it Sunday when he gets home. That's THREE WHOLE DAYS. Apparently because I have the bare minimum detail on my facebook account I get a red flag when I post or message something. Or something. Who knew?

Isn't there one - a bullet bass?

maybe I'll ask him mañana

They do indeed, the ones I have heard anyway. But I've never been in a position to A/B a Mustang and a P bass at the same time. Years ago I had a Musicmaster modded with a P pickup (Bass Doc, is he still around?) and that sounded lovely. Anyway, this one has got my complete attention. If it is a light one I'll have it.

So they are indeed. Thank you, I have messaged him.

I am looking, in a casual kind of way you understand, at Mustang basses. I like maple necks so immediately discount all the rosewood/pau ferro ones (so goodbye JMJ. I know, doing myself a disservice). My ideal and perfect Mustang would be a 70s USA black with maple neck model that is sub-8lbs. I understand that they are usually very heavy but I have seen a couple appear on reverb in the USA that come up at under 8lbs in that configuration. Not seen one for sale over here. I am wondering, though, what the difference would be in the playing and sound of the Mustang pickup compared to the more recent Player series that have P/J. There is a black with maple neck, albeit with a tort guard but that is easily swapped. Ignoring the J pickup, because I expect I probably would, how different is the P pickup to the Mustang one?

You have read my mind - I do believe that is exactly what I am going to do. I had another bonding session today and find the blend of both pups to be something rather splendid. And I have a set of TI flats on their way I had the house to myself this morning so played it through my usual gig set up. Pushed with a little clean drive it became a lively beast

Kind of half way between the two It does seem to depend on the light, though. I imagine on a bright sunny day it would look honey coloured, on a dull day this darker caramel.

Some pics! Looks like the film was never taken off the back of the route cover and its gone all cruddy. Well, its gone all cruddy, anyway.

Smoothest roundwounds that hurt fingers the least?

Do Elixir make a short scale, does anyone know? A cursory Google would suggest not. -
A guitarist I was in a band with for a few years told of a time when his function band decided to learn 'Goodbye to Love' by the Carpenters. This has one of the all time classic guitar solos in it and, to my ears, sounds a bit tricky He spent weeks getting it note perfect, and he would have done a damned fine job of it as well. Once it was under his belt and he was keen to play he mentioned it at rehearsal, asking when they were going to give it a run though. 'Oh, didn't we say? We decided not to do it'.
-
With my blues rock trio we agree on a new song and usually keep the bones of it but, generally, it evolves during rehearsal into something slightly different. I guess that is what blues rock trios have always done. Sometimes one of us will veto a suggestion in which case it generally doesn't make it as far as rehearsal. But all three of us love the genre and there is such a massive back catalogue of material to choose from it is never an issue to discard the odd suggestion along the way.

That is pretty close! I picked up the tells from one of our conversations, Jon The neck plate says 'Steel Adjustable Neck Made in Japan 764511. Does that number mean anything? (edit) I think possibly 1976?

This popped up on eBay the other day - I was too weak to resist and, despite having a few strong words with myself, I bought it. For a good price, too, especially considering this is one of the better early copies, a Matsumoku, I think. It arrived today and I am pleased to see the pics on eBay showed it to be on worse condition than it is in the flesh. Pretty light at 3.5kg on the nose. I've not done anything much to it other than remove the bridge cover, lower the action a touch and have a quick noodle but already it has some interesting tones with the dead roundwounds that are on it. Not sure when I will get around to taking it to bits for a clean/proper set up and check under the hood to see what the pickups are but to my ears it has a different tone to an Antoria EB-3 shorty I had a year or so ago. Bridge pup in particular is a lot stronger. Don't think the mudbucker is a sidewinder, doesn't sound bassy enough, but it is a nice tone, especially when both are selected. early days but I am inclined to leave this one unmolested, maybe get one of those 'treble/bass' surrounds for the toggle switch. Intonation on the 2 point bridge seems OK as is, strangely. Good enough, anyway. So that's saved me £150 on a new bridge already! Holding picture from the eBay listing until I take some more tomorrow but as this is officially the NBD I thought I'd start the nthread

There's the issue, right there. He should wear them all the time and gradually the brain filters stuff out. I started wearing a pair of hearing aids when I was just 50. I'm now 65 and still evangelical about how they have turned my life around. They aren't perfect, still not much use in a noisy environment like a pub or, particualrly for me, noisy restaurant. But in my every day dealing with people I no longer feel excluded. I have extra gizmos that help with the TV - transmits straight into my hearing aid. Same with my phone. Same with cinema. For gigs I can turn them down until the level is comfortable, no need for ear plugs. I can't praise the hearing aids highly enough. Nor my local NHS audiology department. My current hearing aids would cost around a grand each if I had to buy them - provided free. Free batteries from a walk in. I've never had to wait longer than a week for an appointment.

Superglue. Smarts a bit when you apply it but that is what the cyanoacrylate glues were first developed for, emergency field treatment of wounds.

Ta. I have a '70s Eros EB-3 shorty on its way and I am curious what things can happen to it, if need be. At present it has the toggle switch but These Things Can Change' -

I like the sound of that. How does it manage this - I assume it is some sort of capacitor?* Or something? *I apologise. This makes it sound like I know what I am talking about - I am clueless. -
