1. For sale my FrankenFender p-bass in glossy black, black scratch plate, maple neck, gold hardware, EMG pickup. All quality fittings and nicely put together. I bought it in August last year from fellow basschatter Davetbass - here is the thread. Put together nicely from quality bits - I believe the neck is Mighty Mite. No idea what the body started life as. There is a cheeky Fender JAzz decal on the headstock - neck is jazz skinny but a tad deeper than my Jaguar. It looks magnificent. It plays and sounds just like you would expect. Generally it is in great condition -some buckle rash at the back, the front is largely blemish-free. There is a dink on the bottom end I have tried to picture. The finish at the rear base of the neck has been removed at some stage - I guess when fitting. The EMG pickup sounds great, though the output does seem less than my Jaguar bass. No idea if this is what you would expect but I thought I would mention it. I need to turn the amp up a tad to get the same volume, but when I do it performs nicely. I bought it as a back up bass but have been well and truly bitten by the inscrutable Matsumoku bug and just bought a JapCrap one for this purpose - this has to go. I would like £175 - if you come and pick it up from Benfleet in Essex that is what it would cost. Posted in a sturdy box and sent via Parcelforce 48 it would be £190. I have a tweed Fender-a-like hard case I don't require - posted in that would be £205. Collected in that £190. 2. For Sale, my Squier VM Jazz fretless. I bought it around 6 months ago from fellow Basschatter Lateralus462 (Chris) - here is the thread. I put some Rotosound 'TruBass' black nylon flats on it which, to my ears, made a large improvement. It is in exceptionally good nick - I won't say 'As New' - there's a tiny bit of rash on the back but you have to search for it and no dinks I am aware of. Chris put a granite effect scratch plate on it, which I have kept on. Like it or not it is there and, if removed, would leave some holes. I took it to one rehearsal, played it at home half a dozen times and it has been sat in a gig bag apart from that. There is nothing I need to say about these - generally considered to be the best value for money fretless you can get and one of the jewels in the Squier crown. But not for me. I play in two rock covers bands and am unlikely to ever use it so it is a waste. I am looking for £160 - what I paid but I put new strings on it and some fuel to get it. If you come here (Benfleet) and pick it up that is what it will be. Add £15 for Parcelforce 48 delivery in a sturdy box and well padded. I have a tweed Fender-a-like hard case I want shot of, either with this, with my other bass or on it's own - if you want me to post it in that add £30. (Or, if you want to collect it in the hard case add £15) Payment either cash on collection or Paypal. Here are some pics:
3.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Westone-Thunder-1-A-...=item4aa0427ef0 Westone body. Not sure if it's likely to be useful for anyone.
I've just started watching that, as it happens. If it goes for next to nothing I might have a tickle at it for spares as I eventually found the decent Thunder 1 A bass I was looking for. Or, more precisely, it found me. And I had just bought the Thunder Jet that came up on eBay, too - my Japcup runneth over this week! The Scavenger has a day to go with no bids - could be a bargain.
4.
That's really nice. I wish I could afford it!
Maybe you can now? Bump for a price drop.
5.
The only live album I regularly listen to (to my wifes horror), is Humble Pie at the Filmore East.
+1 for that one. Brilliantly atmospheric. But bands can vary from performance to performance, can't they? Taking Deep Purple as an example 'Made In Japan' is, for my taste, just about the perfect live album. But if you listened to any of the other live performances from that era you'd get a pretty mixed bag. But the sound (and arrangements) on Made In Japan are, for me, way better than the studio sound on Machine Head in particular. Ditto Wishbone Ash - studio stuff sounds a little weak and wishy washy, 'Live Dates' is up there with the best - powerful and melodic (that reminds me - add Ted Turner's guitar solo in 'The King Will Come' to best guitar solo thread - that wahwah!!).
6. Hmm, never straight forward is it. A bonus is that the D'Addarios 50-105 are in stock... but they aren't really cheap enough to start experimenting with on a whim. Just a thought - when I bought my Scavenger bass it was already strung with some gorgeous but quite heavy and stiff flats - they are still on there and a different feel entirely to the TI Jazz flats. They have black silk at the business end and a brass ball at t'other end - would this be a clue as to what they are?
7. I love them too - damn, that's one handsome guitar. My Washburn Sacvenger (eyes left) is very similar in shape and also has a fat arse - fits into a Hiscox STD-EBP case.
8. Thanks for that. Looks like La Bella standard flats are the way to go then - though out of stock at the moment. Possibly a stupid question but would extra long ones be ok - is it just a question of winding them round more?! They are the same price.
9. Hi all. I've just acquired a Westone Thunder 1A. I want to put flats on it - currently use TI Jazz flats on another bass and am loving them. However. For my new band we detune a semitone (playing heavy-ish classic rock stuff) and I think they are loose enough as it is. I've had a read through some older posts but just can't get my head around what I would need from the bewildering choice out there. Do I need a thicker guage to compensate for detuning a bit? As far as I can see Tomastik don't do a thicker guage (or do they?) Or would the different tension in a different make, say la Bella, make enough difference? help!
10. Just bought a Westone Thunder 1A very painlessly indeed from Noel. A pleasure to do business with.
11. At least your band could play the same venue as my lot as you just about banned our set list....
12. Ditto - couldn't have been better.
13. Again, thanks for that. Maybe I should keep it?.... And a very Happy Gilmour to you to Mr Schnozz.
14.
Definetly cort, its a 1994 model the N being for nineties and the first number the year
Thanks for that. Nice to have it confirmed. How do Cort guitars rate compared to other factories? I've noodled around on a couple of Squier strats and this is the best one, but I imagine there are a lot of frogs out there.
15. Now surplus to requirements, I bought this in May last year. To save me taking any extra pics I've included those sent to me by the guy I bought it from. He said it was based on an early 90's Korean (Cort factory) model s/n CN 432959. This one is the original neck and body, in similarly good overall condition (the neck is not new but there was almost no fret wear and that has been polished out. The Gilmour mods include plain black scratch plate, stubby whammy bar, 'Gilmour switch' that activates both neck and bridge pups, higher output pots, rewire and extra shielding as per picture. The pictures say it all, really. Sexy beast, isn't it! There was a slight issue with one of the higher frets catching, I had them dressed and now it plays beautifully and sounds, well, like a strat. I have a soft Fender gig bag, the not very padded ones, that it lives in. I took it to one rehearsal, played it at home for a while and then it went back in the bag. [s]Could be yours for £200 including the bag and postage, £185 collected from SE Essex.[/s] Am I mad? now £185 inc. bag and postage or £170 collected. Some more pics from today:
16. I paid £175 for my Scavenger which, for a guitar of that quality, is a steal.
17. Washburn Scavenger bass just popped up. If it is anything like mine it will be the mutts.
18. I am fortunate in that my biggest interest in life is also my work - plants - so the overlap of work into leisure is pretty seamless. So for work and pleasure I design gardens (I ran a small specialist nursery for a few years) but get the biggest thrill of keeping my own 'sub-tropical' garden looking just how I want it. What I have done here has been occasionally featured in newspapers, magazine articles, books and TV. Music is my other vice.
19. This was a thing I encountered - it is one of the tunes my lot cover. I listened to all the versions of this that I could find - the original, live on YouTube, wherever - and there is almost a different bassline each time. In the end I made something up that fits and no-one seems to have noticed.
20. Hi Squiddon If it were me, knowing not a huge amount but a heck of a lot more than I did when I started, I would buy second hand, not new. And second hand from this forum - much safer and everyone seems straight down the line. Further to that I would buy Mr Foxen's Westone Thunder 1A for £150. (I think he might even drop a bit). Disclaimer is that I don't actually own one but want to - except in black - everything I have read about these Westone Thunder basses is that they represent just about the best value for money you can get. Heavy, yes, but solidly built and the 1A gives you the choice of active or passive - a vast range of sounds from such a simple instrument.
21. Gassing for a Westone Thunder 1A at the moment after being seriously impressed by the beastie in my avatar.
22. A fellow dinosaur here - I look at all those websites you mention but Gumtree has got me the two bands that I am in now. I expect you watch that, but just in case you don't.
23. A bit late getting back but that guy Chris did an ace job and for very little money. Plus collected and delivered, though he is fairly local. I will use him all the time now.
24. I usually use Parcelforce 48, you can add insurance as required, it is trackable, too. Never had a problem. Just pop into the local post office and do it from there - saves hanging around all day waiting for someone to collect it, too.
