  1. OK, so when are you going to do it? I'll probably not have the time to get stuck into something like this until late spring. Must say, though, that the more I think about it the more it appeals. I had a go with rattle cans once and the end result gave a similar finish to Tuffcoat This would saave all that undercoat, grain filler, sanding and polishing malarky
  2. Good question. Heat gun and a scraper? No idea. Presumably it is tuff, so maybe not easy.
  3. You know, I think we have all got the idea now, you're a real cool guy who likes stuff that is edgy. But do you really have to keep p!ssing on everyone's chips just to keep telling us? You've hijacked a perfectly innocent thread to once again tell us you find Fenders boring. You know a lot of people, including me, like them so can't you just leave us alone.
  4. Like the proverbial to a blanket, I reckon.
  5. I think this may have moved up in my head from 'silly idea, wait for someone with facts to dismiss it' to 'actually, I think I'll give it a crack!' Hmmm............... Won't be for a while, I have too many plates spinnning at the mo. But how bad would a 50s P bass look with this finish? I bought a bitsa that had been given a fairly clumsy relic job that could be a candidate. I mean, what could possibly go wrong? Vintage style bass with modern textured finish? Could look amazing. Or absolute sh!te.

Sold my Simon and Patrick acoustic guitar to Chris in the most straight forward and pleasant transaction Thank you, Sir, enjoy the guitar.
  7. Probably the biggest 180 I have ever done is with country music. Growing up and for a lot of my adult life I hated it. But, for no reason - I certainly had never listened to it to make a value judgement. For various reasons I got to listen to a lot of it and found it to be, on the whole, a rich mine of beautifully crafted and played songs with sharp lyrics. I got to see the Zac Brown Band at the first Country to Country festival at the O2 and it has to be one of the very best live performances I have ever seen.
  8. I'd be very interested to see some pics of the finished, er, finish if anyone has the time and could be bothered. Edit - for clarity, I mean anyone who has tried to achieve a flatter than normal finish. I have owned Barefaced cabs and know what it is like when applied 'normally'. I seem to recall reading that someone had managed to get a linen type finish, probably one of the serial cab makers on here
  9. That's how I imagine it, too. Could be interesting! Then again, could be horrid. I wonder how much difference the grade of roller would make, like when painting emulsion. I've never used the stuff, mind, so have no firm idea how the texture can vary.
  10. Just curious what it might look like. Best guess is disgusting but it would certainly be easy
  11. I would suggest two basses, depending upon whether you favoured the Club or the Bronco. A Danelectro 56 single cut is similar in vibe to the Hofner but a far superior instrument all round. it will do the thud just fine, it will also do clank if you want clank. It can also do a passable J bass. I had both at the same time at one point and could easy make the comnparison. A Harley Benton PB-Shorty, which is a familar solid-body like the Bronco but in a different league. Forget the price tag. I bought one with the intention of modding it but, straight out of the box, it is great. Sounds like a old-school P bass, no nasal weakness like a Bronco. Tuners aren't great but they work just fine. Ignoring the price point it is a good bass. Considering the price point it is a miracle. Or one of these, Antoria New yorker https://www.facebook.com/417013792399839/posts/antoria-new-yorker-bass-30inch-scale-12k-destiny-humbucking-pickup-designed-with/417053982395820/ OK, that was three.
  12. These are very good. Got me thinking, found some 'vintage' Decadry (like Letraset) dots on eBay for not much. Might work?
  13. Ever the tightwad, I bought a sheet of cheap self-adhesive luminous paper and attacked it with a hole punch. I then emptied out the bits and used them. A bit clunky but it worked for a while.
  14. I had a Tecamp Puma 300 teamed up with a BF One10 and it was bliss. Wish I hadn't sold it, tbh.
  15. Roswell Musicman style pickup, 4 string, Alnico 5, model number MA4-CD-N Came with a bass I fiddled with, now spare Here's the link to the website for all those technical things I don't understand: https://roswellpickups.com/product/ma4-cd/ Has a bit of foam to go undeneath, too, but no screws. £30 £25 £20 posted to mainland UK
  16. That Simon and Patrick guitar is still here, Russ. If it is a boy, you know what to call him
  17. These are the best.
  18. Brendon bought my Stagg EUB in the most straightforward of deals. He swerved round on a business trip to collect as it was nearly on his way. Brief chat before he resumed, lovely fella Enjoy the bass, sir.
  19. I can only think he painted it at night with the light off. He seems so pleased with it as well. Jeez.
  20. Soooo many. First time Joe Bonamassa came over to the UK (2009?), saw him at the Albert Hall. Massively disappointing, 2 hrs of soul-less showboating. Eric Clapton was wheeled out to a 2 minute standing ovation, he dusted off 'standard guitar solo #2', got another standing ovation. yawn. Paul Jones came out for a harmonica spot but Joe showboated over the top. Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Like a lot of his album stuff, live the band were awful. Ol' Kenny Wayne stood at the edge of the stage, playing faster and faster then holding a note for too long, all the time pulling 'spontaneous' faces and movements that he'd clearly been practicing. The rest of the band looked like they would rather have ben somewhere else. Michael McDonald 2018. He'd lost that effortless smoky falsetto and screeched out all the high notes. We left at half time before he massacred the remaining favourite tunes of ours. Hall and Oates. Saw them in the 90s and they were as good as a band can be. Saw them 2017 - no T-Bone (obvs, he had died by then) or the mad genius of G.E Smith - and they were just awful Arrogant, loose, played 2x40 ins, no encore. Stereophonics Wembley Arena 10 years ago maybe. Sounded like a pub band on a big stage. No spark whatsoever. Martin Turner Ex Wishbone Ash. Couple of months back. Awful. Left at half time. Maceo Parker. Brooklyn Bowl at the O2. They only played about 6 tunes. Interminable introductions to each geriatric band member. I don't care if the old lady hobbling up to the mic was one of James Brown's backing singers, just get on with it. Government Mule, also Brooklyn Bowl. Love their songs but live the solos went on and on and on and on..... same old licks in different songs. Snarky Puppy. Should never have gone, not my thing. Vintage Trouble. Singer kept flinging himself about out of time with the music, like some sort of 2hr floor gymnastics session, after which he was so out of breath he couldn't sing. OK, I admire his stamina but, really? Jamie Cullum 2022? London Paladium. Cocky little tw@t playing jazz with a backing rock band. That all sounds very negative, maybe we should have a 'best gigs' thread. Couldn't agree more about Simple Minds @Mudpup whatever the venue - saw them on the same tour at both the Cliff's Pavlion and the O2 and each time they emptied the tank. Several times since.
  21. OK, so I am not a luthier or anything but assumed it was customary to take a bass to bits when painting it? Instead of slopping over the jack socket, pickgard, pickups, bridge cover (gold ffs?) neck etc etc. Then not painting the bits your 3" brush couldn't get into. Jeez.
  22. I had one of those. Bloomin lovely it was. did much the same as the Hofner single cut I had but better all round.
  23. If it were me I'd get a SUB. but only because I want one and they are too heavy.
  24. I'm in. Got some P bass fettling in the pipline but all the bits and on my desk, waiting. This could be 'The Year' I make it, I have a good feeling about.
