How has your taste in music changed over the years?
Paul S replied to TheGreek's topic in General Discussion
I was born in 1957 but having an older sister who was into music meant I was exposed to a lot of chart stuff from the mid 60s onwards, especially Motown and soul. Every new single was played to death But not so much Beatles or Stones. Once I got into music properly I just listened to blues and rock. Early teens tend to be a bit tribal so to admit liking something else was never an option At school we played records at lunch time and we all brought along our Led Zep, Sabbath, Deep Purple etc albums - one guy had an older brother who was into some great early rock from the late 60s so he brought all his albums along as well. Soul, funk and disco didn't get much of a look in. As I have got older I find I like music from any genre, within reason, reaching the conclusion - as many say - that there is no good or bad music, just stuff I like or dislike. I got quite into more modern country for a while, Zac Brown et al. I do struggle with more modern pop music though. However blues and rock remain as the foundation. Having said that, the two bands I have seen more than any others, and by a country mile, are Go West and Level 42. Probably because they represent the main cross over of Mrs S' musicsl taste and mine so we have tended to go to see them together at any practical opportunity. -

Indeed, he is an absolutely lovely fella. Foz is a big fan of the band - our song choices and how we play them - and goes out of his way to put some decent stuff in our direction which is such a massive bonus

it is indeed. I was wearing my flairs, stack-heeled shoes and 'South Sea Bubble' brushed denim jacket during the recording. Radio Caroline still exists but in a different form to the 'good old days' - it is more of a Suffolk local rock station but, of course, available everywhere as it is online.
-
Well, it sounded pretty good! First time I have had radio play in a band and I am indeed chuffed, Loz. Jeff Healey Band's 'See The Light'. On catch up later on. I might have another listen

My blues rock trio Toredown is going to have a track played on Radio Caroline! Stephen Foster's slot, just before he packs in at 13:40hrs. Must be from one of our recent gigs, some of which was recorded on the desk. No idea which track or what it sounds like so should be interesting! Hope it isn't The Stumble 'cos that's what I did in one section http://www.radiocaroline.co.uk/radioplayer4/index.html?v=1671535956338

What is the most you'd personally pay for a new bass?
Paul S replied to lidl e's topic in Bass Guitars
The most I have paid for a bass was having a Maruszczyk Jake 5 put together which, at the time, cost me £1500. Similar spec. now would be £2000. Which at the time I considered to be good value for what was effectively a custom shop bass - the project was a good one so worth the outlay. But I wouldn't dream of spending that now. The last bass I bought new was a year ago - my Retrovibe P-30 cost just over £400. Other than something like a Harley Benton I'm unlikely to buy new anymore and would most likely top at £400-500 secondhand. Preferably less But, then again, never say never. I have a lot of stuff for sale at the moment and once the money is in the bank.... -
width at 19th fret around 62.5mm

Good moring S'manth. I have one, just checked the measurements: 6.2lbs/2.8ish kg Actually my lightest bass. 41.5mm at the nut, possibly 42. I do't have calipers but by eye it doesn't quite make 42. Then again my eyes aren't so good 19mm spacing at the bridge. As a 4 string there is defo. a vacant couple of mm down each side of the neck. But I think it would be a bit tight to make it a fiver. I wonder if the Hofner Shorty might have a chunkier neck?

To be fair, it comes with an afro comb headstock as standard and free Bongo bottle opener made from the discarded cut off.

My cull continues. I've had this for ages but in all honesty I am unlikely to ever use it again. I have adapted it to my liking. I moved the tailpiece so it takes standard strings instead of just the Stagg ones. I put a gorgeous set of black nylon ones on that cost a lot of money - I believe they are Innovation Rockabilly - which feel, sound and, most importantly, look totally fabulous. I have adapted it to be played on a stand as per NS Design. The stand is relatively lightweight tattoo arm rest but perfectly stable. I removed the end pin - often a source of annoying noises and now reduced the weight a fair bit. I shielded the cavity which got rid of hum. I include in the sale a rarely encountered hard case, made of unobtainium, which I have beaten up a bit so it all fits nicely inside. 168cm long, if that helps. I include the end pin, 'arms', a bow (!) and original gig bag which hasn't quite fallen to bits yet. All mods are reversibe if that is what you want to do - I realise one man's improvements are another man's train wreck. Somewhere I have the Stagg double bass/EUB stand but I can't immediately put my hand to it. If I find it in time I'll include that in the sale. I'd say it is as nice as one of these can be, really - I have managed to polish the turd! If you fancy dipping your toe in the EUB water this is perfect. Asking £300 all in, collected from Benfleet in Essex. Which I reckon is a MASSIVE bargain taking into account the strings and hard case. prepared to meet within a reasonable distance but absolutely no courier.

My cull continues. This poor orphan of a bass has been doing the rounds at Basschat for a few years lookiing for a good home. Wonderful old thing that oozes quality. British made in the late 70s/early 80s? Serial number says it is a Modulator bass, which it clearly isn't, but the She4rgold/hayman bits were rather mix and match in those days by all accounts. 34" scale, single split humbucker that, if you have a stereo jack and at the flick of that switch, will take the top two strings off to one place and the bottom two somewhere else. Has the usual Shergold laquer cracks and blemishes but, to be fair, not as bad as some, overall in sound players condition. As you would expect it does sound a bit like a precision but not quite - slightly more aggressive in the upper mids. Neck is good, aged to a warm pale caramel, 40mm at the nut (plus a teensy bit extra for the binding. String spacing at the bridge 19mm. Weighs 8.6lbs on my scales which is roughly 3.9kg in decimal. Not had sight of the bridge cover. The shop sticker is still on the back of the headstock, not sure if Honest John is still in business. Makes a nice alternative to a Fender but feels as familiar as one when played. I struggle with the slab body otherwise I would keep it. Priced to sell at £350 collected from Benfleet in Essex, possibly meet up - Thurrock Services seems popular at the moment. Been there twice this weekend so expect the police to be calling round soon, wondering what I am up to . No courier at this point, so please don't ask, and no trades thanks.

Low-ish tension roundwounds, similar feel to TI Flats?
Paul S replied to Paul S's topic in Accessories and Misc
TI Jazz Rounds! Never knew such things existed. Off to explore, although I fear they will be expensive. -
Looks like an awful lot of fun One thing about dressing up is losing inhibitions - must help with the on-stage persona. It does that for me, anyway.

Stuff has a value to me beyond which I am not prepared to go. If it is worth more to either the seller or another buyer then I resign myself to not having it and move on to something else. Life is too short to get in a lather about it.

Marvellous, a second person for my ignore list. I've been here since 2008 and only this year needed to do it. I guess the idea of 'agree to disagree' has left the building.

Did you ever work out how the roads are configured? I've been gigging there for 3 years and still always get lost

Low-ish tension roundwounds, similar feel to TI Flats?
Paul S replied to Paul S's topic in Accessories and Misc
Thanks guys. I think any growl is good - it is more the tension of the strings I am trying to replicate. After playing TI Flats for so long I found fretting these particular rounds, whatever they are, to be hard work! I seem to recall using DR Hi Beams in the dim and distant past, so may have a look at those. -
Low-ish tension roundwounds, similar feel to TI Flats?
Paul S posted a topic in Accessories and Misc
My default for the last few years has been to fit TI Flats to all my basses. I like the feel under my fingers, I particularly like the tension and tone. However my most recent bass, a '54 single coil P bitsa, came fitted with rounds and I quite liked that extra bite in this instance. But they were far too high tension to feel comfortable. I am wondering which rounds would feel similar to TI Flats in tension? Preferably cheap ones -
Ciaran bought my Foundation V in the simplest of deals. hand over at Thurrock services in sub-zero temps but always time for a natter. A pleasure doing business
