cleaning hardcase lining to get out smell?
Paul S replied to waylander's topic in Accessories and Misc
Worth another mention for baking powder. I acquired an upholstered 60s chair that absolutely reeked of that special 'charity shop blend' of aromas. Flushed with the success of deodorising my old slippers the chair was treated to a sprinkling of baking powder, brushed in, left for a day, vacuumed off. Had to do it 3 times but it has worked. -
Matron! I said remove his spectacles!

The Real Me is a good shout, I'd forgotten that. Ditto Mercy a couple of posts up. Seeing 'Blinded By The Light' up there reminds me that I generally prefer Springsteen songs when they are performed by other people. 'Fire' by The Pointer Sisters', 'Born To Run' by Frankie Goes To Hollywood.

They are different beasts in a lot of ways. Both give a Precision bass tone, but with different flavours. The Entwistle Neo is a more aggressive, harder sound. But roll off the tone and it still does vintage - but perhaps not so lush and rich. Similar to my ears to a Seymour Duncan quarterpounder, which was industry standard replacement for rock for some while but a good deal more expensive. I did actually put a CS '62 set in that Honcore bass to replace the PBXN that I initially fitted. 'Give it a treat' I thought. Tried it, put the PBXN back in again. For the job I needed - a slightly edgier rockier tone for a blues rock trio - the PBXN was a better fit. For me that is one of the absolute joys of fiddling about, trying different pickups, which ones match the sound in my head. etc. A Ki0gon loom has a screw terminal fixing so you don't even need to worry about soldering. Speaking of a better fit - one thing with the PBXN is the pole pieces are very long so you'll need to make sure you have a fairly generous cavity, So to speak.

Just found the pic I was looking for. Bit out of focus but you get the idea. A 3.1kg rawk machine

I'm always surprised at how cheap these Hohner B basses sell for. Like you say, they are extremely well made and sound brill.

Be rude not to.

Looks like the result of a weird genetic experiment using DNA from a ram, a giraffe and Mickey Mouse. I also used an Encore bass as the start for a mod. I had a med. scale Hondo II neck spliced into a short scale double cut Encore body and it is a corker! Ki0gon loom and an Entwistle PBXN pickup. Yummy.

A couple that I like over the originals. 'Ain't No Love' by Whitesnake over Bobby Blue Bland. 'Amos Moses' by SAHB over Jerry Reed (just) 'Ride Like The Wind' by Saxon over Christopher Cross (just) 'Hush' by Gotthard over Kula Shaker over Deep Purple over Joe South. 'Blue Jean Blues' by Jeff Healey over ZZ Top.

Your best (and worst!) bass gear purchases of 2020?
Paul S replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
My best purchase hands down is my Guild B-301. Probably, for what I want out of a bass, my best purchase ever. Probably my worst purchase was a combination of various things for a little project. Years ago someone had given me an old Stagg practice combo, 20W, I think, with an 8" speaker. It lived in the loft. I decided to carve it about, mount my Trace Elliot Elf in the top bit and put a better quality 8" driver inside. P. Audio one, 200W, cost me £50. I struggled to get the front board out cleanly and managed to snap it in half, the jagged bit tore through the grill cloth. So, rather than chuck it out the window I handed it over to a mate who did all the necessary stuff, put some nice Fender-esque front cloth on it, mended the front board, mounted the Elf inside with little brackets, fixed the new driver inside. Bloody thing sounds like a radio speaker mounted in a biscuit tin 🤣 I really should know better. -
Mrs S was a fan, having seen them a couple of times in the 80s, so when they were billed to play at one of those 'Jazz nights' at Kew Gardens she was keen to go, must have been late 90s or early noughties. Safe to say they blew me away. Almost unbelievably it was hard to take your eyes off August Darnell, despite the best efforts of the Coconuts. He is one of those guys that just oozes charisma, always tipping his hat or striking a pose. Very, very entertaining live band.

Bought a mic stand bag from Chris in the most straightforward of transactions. Great price and speedily dispatched - a pleasure doing business.

What would constitute a lightweight body for a bass, to then add a neck, electrics and hardware and come all in at, say, 3.6kg? Asking for a friend.....
-
another thought. I know you are a Trace Elliot chap - I have one of these kicking about...

cleaning hardcase lining to get out smell?

That is what I was going to suggest - leave it in for a while, though. I managed to deodorise a pair of my old slippers with good old bicarb.
